Tasks
1. The effects of the types of loading or forces exerted on a building depend on the
way in which those forces are applied. Maintaining the structural stability of a
building relies on its ability to withstand applied loading without suffering
movement or deformation. Resistance to movement and deformation results
from effective initial design of the structure.
Describe the various forms of structural design used for multi-story
buildings and evaluate the benefits and shortcomings of each. (P1.1)

Analyse such construction techniques used to achieve such designs
and justify the materials specification for a range of multi-story designs.
(P1.2, P1.3)
3. A building can be described as a shell that houses people in a comfortable
environment, and enables people to carry out designated tasks with ease. For
this purpose range of systems used to provide sufficient flexibility of internal
layouts to meet both present and future requirements of high rise buildings.
Describe, using appropriate details, the systems used to provide
flexibility of internal spatial planning and evaluate the benefits and
short comings of each. (P2.1)
Student can achieve D1 by selecting the most suitable internal spatial
planning system for the 60 storey commercial building to be built on
Colombo Megapolise Development in Sri Lanka with justification. Student can
do this by identifying the internal spaces in this High Rise Commercial
Building and recommending suitable spatial planning.

4. In modern multi-storey buildings, the integration of building services is of great
importance in ensuring that effective utilization of space is made. This space
utilization is planned by using effective internal spatial planning techniques.
Analyse the constructional processes used to install such spatial
planning systems and describe how such techniques impact on
established building services. (P2.2, P2.3)
5. In the modern construction industry it is important to drive out waste and
enhance cost and programme certainty, through properly planning the works
and construction logistics and sound construction techniques. This is known as
buildability.
Define principals of buildability and with appropriate details, critically
discuss the implication of buildability for the construction industry.
(P3.1)
6. Employing buildability concept in construction projects, clients can achieve
several benefits and pay backs.
Analyse the advantages and disadvantages of employing the concept
of buildability in terms of health and safety, efficiency, economy and quality
of construction projects. (P3.2)
Student can achieve M2 by discussing the buildability concepts for the
above mentioned 60 story High Rise building in Colombo Megapolise
Development in Sri Lanka.
7. The concept of sustainability crops up in almost every sphere of human activity
at the present time and the construction industry as with every other industry,
must consider how it will adapt and change to meet the challenges that
sustainability
presents.

Professional Diploma in QS
D3 can be achieved by evaluating the benefits that can be achieved
through adopting sustainable construction approach in the 60 storey
commercial building to be built on Colombo Megapolise Development in Sri
Lanka.
9. Until recently, high rise buildings have been viewed as mega scale energy
consumers. However, with new sustainable techniques that has been designed
with energy conservation and sustainability.
Describe and evaluate such techniques used to erect multi story
buildings which provide flexibility of spatial planning in terms of
sustainable construction principles. (P4.3)
10.The construction industry and the buildings it produces, maintains, repairs,
converts and demolishes have both an immediate and long term impact on
future occupier needs.
Plan for future occupier needs and analyse the alteration and repair
techniques used to meet such needs and review the legal constraints
on the above processes. (P5.1, P5.2)
11.Demolition is tearing down of buildings and other structures. Before any
demolition activities, there are many steps that need to take place.
Evaluate the construction methods associated with the demolition of
a given structure, with particular reference to the associated documents,
and compliance with all relevant legal constraints including health and safety
legislation, CDM requirements. (P5.3)
