EntrySkills:
Students were all on grade level for Reading (Level M-P)
All students were able to follow written and verbal directions
All students demonstrated basic proficiency with technology and devices (use of

keyboarding and the mouse, the ability to log-in, basic navigation of embedded
links and URLs)
Use of the application NearPod for content use

PriorKnowledge:
Students understand what online safety relates to when on the Internet
Students understand what blocked sites mean through our filtering system
Students understand that there are safety risks when giving information while

on the Internet

InterestintheCollaborativeUnitrelatingtoInternetSafety:
After interviewing students informally, there was much interest in performing this
unit. The students have demonstrated skills in relation to use of devices, as most have
multiple exposure to technology at home as well as at school. There are five students
that do not have internet use at home, and the ability to do the homework that is
required of them on the NearPod lessons must be done at school after viewing the
individual NearPod lessons. Beside those students, the other participants show basic to
intermediate skills in navigation and use of technology. This class has had limited use
of applications in the classroom, and Ms. Patrick is in the process of getting every
student logged in and using our Google Classroom for different curricular needs. Some
of these students are in my Guided Reading class and have experienced the use of
1

many applications for creative processes and for interactive collaboration.

They are

familiar with social media and the applications that allow online interaction, and they
are familiar with gaming that is done online for entertainment.

GeneralLearningPreferences:
All students are excited to begin this unit and are proficient with logging in and getting
on the internet from various devices. We are utilizing a mixture of devices in this class
due to the amount of devices that are available for us during the instructional day. We
will be using the following:

Devicestobeused:

Yoga ThinkPads

IPads

Samsung Galaxy Tablet

IMac Desktops

EducationalAbilityLevels:
Because this class has not participated in a Statewide or Nationally Normed Test, there
are no scores to use for ability identification. However, all students are reading at or
above grade level (M-P) and two students are identified as needing assistance
(remediation) in Reading/ELA and Math. Four students are identified as Gifted and
they demonstrate no deficiencies in their instructional levels this year.

Conclusion:
After informally interviewing the class as a whole, they are excited to learn digitally
and with various devices. They do not see a problem with varying devices in this unit,
as they are used to having multiple examples of technology in the classroom. The
majority of the students understand the basics of online safety and have had many
graphics, videos, and written examples around the computer that details concerns
about our Barracuda Filtering System for Safety, the importance of limiting personal
information, and the need to talk to parents and teachers if there is a need because of

uncomfortable situations while on the internet. They are looking forward to beginning
this unit, and with this much enthusiasm, it is impossible not to be excited about
providing them instruction about a subject that they utilize daily.
