The Fair Deal and Containment

The Sources of Soviet Conduct (1947)

- Soviet Ideology passed down from generation to generation with no time table set for
their goals

- Cant be wiped out as quickly as an aggressive leader such as Hitler and Napoleon
- Need to contain communism by applying counterforce at certain areas around the
world

- US obviously cant destroy communism in one sweep, but they can discourage it to
the point that eventually it will lead to the breakup of the Soviet Union

A Critique of Containment (1947)

- Issue with containment plan is that it can lead to a misunderstanding and a misuse of
American power

- Makes use of satellite states, puppet governments and agents which have been
subsidized and supported, though their effectiveness is meager and their reliability
uncertain

- Makes us put our trust and money in unproven allies while ignoring our stronger
allies

- Should focus on the Soviet Union itself and not the policies it holds
- By making this such a priority for the UN it will destroy the foundation on which the
UN was founded.

The Truman Doctrine (1947)

- Greek government needs assistance as it is poor and under the threat of a

communist party

- Greece and Turkey both need financial assistance that no other country can supply
anymore other than the United States

- Many countries are currently under the issue of the minority forcing their opinions and
political ideology on the majority

- Set precedent of the United States intervening if a country was seen as having their
liberties limited by a minority

- If one country falls, others may as well so it is in the US interest to help all countries
The Marshall Plan (1947)

- Hard for the people of the United States to realize the severity of reconstruction in
Europe since we are so far separated from it

- Countries of Europe need financial assistance to buy supplies for their country to
rebuild (from America) to maintain the system of processing goods in exchange for
currency

- Intervention techniques are not against any country but are for helping countries that
need it

- Initiative of recovering the European economy must start with the European nations
agreeing on a plan

Statement on the Korean War (1950)

- Goal for intervention in Korea was to avoid a third World War by taking action
immediately instead of waiting for another Hitler situation to emerge

- Best chance of stopping general war is to meet Korean attacks in Korea instead of
letting the fighting expand

Democrats and Communits (1950)

- Communism is the reason for no peace after World War II

- Reason why the United States isnt living up to its potential is because it has been
infested with Communists

- Believed people in government offices were selling information to the communists or

were communists themselves

The Black Silence of Fear (1952)

- Intolerance for other people (particularly Asia) was at an all time high

- Idea of the time was to defeat communism will guns and not ideology
- Communist threat in the United States was being blown out of proportion using fear
tactics

- By only allowing the orthodox viewpoints to be accepted in the country we are limiting
our nations growth and welfare.

- By only allowing the orthodox viewpoint to flourish, our free speech is being taken
away

Massive Retaliation (1954)

- Communism spreads through nations going bankrupt

- Need to be harsher on countries that do become Communist to deter others from
following suit

- If you take warfare out of the ideal situation for a country, they will stop fighting such
as what happened in Korea
