Background case for assignment

You as Director/Projects want to select a suitable Second-in-Command to manage a project


and commencing in 6 months designing Thyristor controlled Surge protector Units with
international collaboration of Germany, Sweden and Switzerland and Design and workshop
support facilities located in Sri Lanka and located at katunayake and Koggala.
The person must be able to organize the HR personnel (2 Engineers and 8 Tech Officers) for
the international Design Support Team.
Project involves 3 years minimum duration and the applicants are expected to travel overseas
for training in design software and equipment/tools familiarization in the 1st year and as part
of the design /implementation/presentation groups in subsequent years.
Remuneration will be based on experience initially and on performance thereafter.

Job Specification
Should be within the age of 35-45 years
Education: Should have a
a. Masters Degree in Engineering (in Electrical field) or
b. MBA with B.Sc. Engineering Degree (in Electrical field)
From a recognized Engineering University
Experience: 5 years at the national level or international level in project design and development
or project management
Language Requirement : Fluency in oral and written English is required
Certification: Certification in Project Management professional is desirable
Competencies:
a. Excellent oral and written communication skills and proficiency in computer skills in MS
office applications and any designing application
b. Strong organizational and analytical skills
c. Proven ability to set goals and deliver on time
d. Ability to work independently to tight deadlines and under pressure
e. Be an excellent team player and able to work in an multi-cultural team
f. Openness to change and ability to manage complexities
g. Personal interest, commitment, efficiency, flexibility and willingness to work with highly
motivated team
h. Excellent planning, organizing and leadership skills
i. Have a quick and decisive approach to resolving issues.
j. Should be able to maintain strategic Human Resource planning with the team of project

Job Description
Job Title: Project Manager
Location: Design Department, Katunayake and Koggala
Period: 3 years of minimum period starting in 6 months
Supervision: should guide and manage a team of 2 Engineers and 8 Technical Officers
Report To: Director /Project

Duties:

d. Coordinating design aspects and ensure consistency of quality
Working Condition:
Stationed either in Katunayake or Koggala and able to coordinate and travel between the both
stations to ensure smooth operation at both workstations
Required to participate and organize foreign training in design software and equipment/tools
familiarization in the 1st year and as part of the design /implementation/presentation groups in
subsequent years

2. Design the template for the content in the Advertisement in the newspapers

3. Outline the selection process for recruitment


Here the job vacancy, job requirements, factors affecting, JD & JS, Advertisement and calling for an
interview have been already finalized. The selection process would be as per the following steps.
Step 1: Evaluation of Applications. Since, the qualifications and experiences of the person required are
already defined, the candidates who have applied for the job has to be sorted out as per the
qualification and experiences. Though, mostly, it is not possible to have the candidates with the almost
to our requirements, those matches nearly to our requirements shall be called for the interviews. An
employment test is not suitable for this type of selections.
Step 2: Holding Interviews. As, the project manager post is one of the most respected post and the
persons to be interviewed also to be treated well. Accordingly, a certain interview questions shall be
prepared initially in order to shoot them at the interview for screening. These questions should be able
to acquire the persons inner qualities and abilities. Methodological questions to test his ability to make
decisions, handling crisis situations, temperaments, managerial skills and those specified in the
advertisement. It would be more appropriate if the interview is held as like a discussion which would
acquire more information and it would put the candidate also in a state of relaxed manner.
Step 3: Background investigations. If the interview is successful in selecting a few suitable candidates for

It's important to have a clear set of policies and procedures that explain and govern the various tasks
and relationships necessary to keep the organization running.
