(d) Graphically represent the nature and relative position of an operating line and
equilibrium line for (i) co-current absorption (ii) counter-current absorption (iii) cocurrent stripping and (iv) counter-current stripping.

(e) Ammonia diffuses through a stagnant layer of air with a thickness of 1 em at 60C at 1
atm total pressure. The partial pressures of ammonia on the two sides of the layer are
0.9 and 0.1 atm. Diffusivity of ammonia in air at 25C and at 1 atm can be taken as
2
0.214 cm /sec. Calculate (i) molar flux of ammonia (ii) velocities of the individual
component with respect to stationary observer (iii) the molar and mass average
velocities of ammonia and air.
[8)
(f) Absorption of oxygen from an air bubble occurs in pure water at 25 C and at I atm.
The film theory is applicable for the gas phase transport and the penetration theory is
applicable for the liquid phase transport of oxygen. The air film thickness, and the
contact time of the liquid element in air can be taken as 2 em and 1 s respectively.
Diffusivity of oxygen in air and in water at 25C and at I atm are given as 0.176

cm /sec and 2.lxl0" m /sec. Equilibrium relationship is given as,p02 = 4.36 x 104 x.
Calculate (i) Local mass transfer coefficients (ii) Overall mass transfer coefficients
based on gas phase and liquid phase basis (iii) Fraction of the total mass transfer
resistance in the gas phase and liquid phase.
