From the Pulpit
In fulfilling the mitzvot there are blessings
recited prior to performing the mitzvah. For
example, before lighting candles, hearing
the shofar, shaking the lulav, eating maztah
or marror a bracha is recited. There is
always a blessing associated with the
action. Why is it, that before the “telling
the story of the exodus” at the seder, a
mitzvah from the Torah, no blessing is said
at all? After all, this is the highlight and
purpose of the seder. We are passing our
holy tradition from generation to genera-
tion as it states, “and you shall tell your son
on that day”.
There are many answers to this question.
Among them is that we already mentioned
the exodus in the kiddush, “zecher l’yitzitat
mitzraim”, earlier in the seder. Yet, this
answer can be questioned: there are two
types of mentioning the exodus. One, that
which we do everyday in Shema, or in the

kiddish: and secondly, a special command
of telling the exodus on Pesach night at the
Seder. So the question comes back-- why
no bracha at the seder for maggid?
The Sfat Emet says that we don’t make a
blessing on something that we would have
done on our own, such as telling the story
of the exodus at the seder but mitzvot that
we would not have done on our own such
as succah, tefillin, mezuzah, shofar etc we
do make a bracha. Another answer may
be that the only time we make a blessing
before a mitzvah is when we are able to
complete the entire mitzvah by ourselves,
without anyone else’s participation. Telling
the story at the seder needs the participa-
tion of someone else, and if the other per-
son does not cooperate, then the blessing
would be in vain, and so we do not make
a blessing for “relating the story of the
exodus” at the seder.
This idea explains that in order to do some
mitzvot we need active participation from
others to make it happen. We need people
helping one another for a minyan, a class,
tehillim, holiday celebrations. We are
not an island unto ourselves. We are a
community working together and assisting
each other allowing us to become a whole
people striving toward the same goals.
May we merit to work together and be
sensitive towards each other, so that after
traveling from the Exodus on Pesach to Har
Sinai on Shavuot, we can stand united as
they were then not as individuals but as a
community.

Matzah-rella Lasagna
3 matzah squares
2 eggs
1 can kosher tomato-mushroom sauce
salt, pepper, oregano, basil to taste
8 oz. fat free grated mozzarella
8 oz. fat free cottage cheese (or
ricotta?)
Soften matzahs in very hot water; drain
after 30 seconds.
Beat Egg Beaters and seasonings. Pour
mixture over matzahs.
Spread 1/3 of tomato sauce on bottom of
square casserole dish sprayed with cooking
spray.
Put 1 matzah on top of this, spread with
1/3 cottage cheese, then 1/3 mozzarella.
Starting with sauce, make 2 more layers.
Bake 45 mins. at 350 degrees. Let it stand
a few minutes before serving.
(If there is Egg Beater mixture left over after
layering, pour it over top before baking.)
Matzoh Buttercrunch
5 boards matzoh
1 cup (2 sticks) margarine
1 cup packed brown sugar
1.5 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped, toasted almonds
(optional)
Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil,
and spray the foil with nonstick cooking
spray. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Cover the baking sheet with a layer of
matzoh crackers, breaking them up to fill in
gaps if necessary.
Combine the margarine and brown sugar
in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir
constantly until the sugar dissolves. Allow
the mixture to come to a boil. Once it boils,
keep it boiling for 3 more minutes.
Remove the mixture from the heat, and pour
carefully over the matzoh. Use an offset
spatula or a knife to smooth the top and en-
sure the sugar evenly covers the entire area.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, checking consis-
tently to make sure the mixture does not
brown too quickly. If it seems to be getting
too dark around the edges, remove it.
Once out of the oven, sprinkle the choco-
late chips over the top of the toffee layer
and let it stand for several minutes, until the
chocolate chips start melting. Use a spatula
to spread the chocolate evenly over the
surface.
If desired, sprinkle the nuts over the top and
press gently to adhere while the chocolate
is still wet.
Place in the refrigerator to cool. Break into
pieces by hand once set.
Pesach Chicken Pie
5 to 6 matzot
1 lb minced chicken breast
Parsley and green onions to taste
(chopped)
2 raw eggs
1 medium potato, cooked and mashed
1 big onion, chopped
Garlic, pepper and salt to taste
2 to 3 tablespoons oil
Soak the matzot for 3 minutes in warm
water with salt.
Put out the maximum water possible and
pick them as much hole as possible.
Oil a pie pan and fold with half the matzot.
In a pan over the stove, brown the onion,
add the meat salted, and with garlic, pep-
per, parsley and green onions, and brown
it. Let cool.
Add the mashed potato mixed with 1
beaten egg. Put this filling over the matza
in the pan and cover with the other half of
matzot.
Pour over the remaining beaten egg and
bake for 15 to 20 minutes till golden.

D’Satmar in 1986. He is currently the Director of Beis Midrash Program and Talmud Teacher, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah
Rabbinical Seminary where he teaches Talmud and Judaic studies to Rabbinical candidates. Rabbi Katz has been a
Scholar-in-Residence at various synagogues throughout the US and Canada.

During the sixteenth century, European Jews
were debating important questions regard-
ing Jewish philosophy and sociology. Two
of the major issues discussed were:
1) Should Jewish law be accessible to all or
should it be written in a manner that limits
its access to the elite?
2) What should be the relationship between
Torah and secular studies? In addition to
these issues, the Maharshal and Rema were
also the first ones during the Modern period
to address the tension between tradition
and philosophy. The Rema and the Mehar-
shal both had very strong views on these
issues. They had very different personalities
and temperaments and as a result rarely
agreed on anything. Their debates are il-
luminating, and offer much insight into early
modern Jewish culture.

By the time the Maharal comes on the
scene the big question in Jewish culture is:
Hallacha or Kabbalah?
The Maharal offers a creative solution. We
will explore whether his enterprise was suc-
cessful. Further, we will focus on how the
Maharal repelled intense challenges to the
Rabbinic tradition which originated in the
Jewish communities in Italy and Amsterdam.

Judaism’s encounter with modernity. Each
of them has a unique approach to this
challenge. Some of them are outspoken
separatists while others are moderate ac-
comodationists. Each of them marshals the
tradition in support of their view.
A close look at some of the specific issues
they addressed and the controversies in
which they took a stand, will offer a win-
dow into their views about the basic tenets
of Jewish law, theology and philosophy.
