CJHS DRAMA CLUB Audition Packet 2015

The two short Comedies: The Love Doctor by Moliere

In this play, King Sganarelle has a sick daughter, Lucinda. He doesnt want to
admit that her sickness stems from her wanting to marry Clitandre, a handsome
suitor. He wants to cure her, but anytime anyone suggests marriage, he pretends
not to hear. The daughters friend and wise young maid, Lisette helps Lucinda
trick her father into allowing her to marry Clitandre by dressing him up as a
doctor and her curea fake marriage with him. Other characters: bumbling inept
doctors, and greedy friends/family members. This play has a lot of physical
comedy in it.
Tick Talk by Lindsay Price
In this unique play most everyone only says one word over and over. The
characters names are what they say, for example: Hi, Hey There, or Great Dance.
Mime and acting with strong, varied intentions will be a huge part of this play. It
is a comedy about how in modern society nobody says anything meaningful
anymore and it is hard to communicate.
Rehearsals:
The rehearsal schedule is laid out on The Divine Ms. Elsons Teacher Web
website in the calendar section, please look at it carefully before
auditioning.
Auditions:
By auditioning, you are agreeing to accept whatever part you get. Read
that again. If you will quit (or go through the rehearsal process exuding misery
and generally bringing the cast down) if you are cast as a smaller part other than
the lead, please do not audition. The CJHS Drama Club philosophy is that
there are no small parts only unimaginative actors.
ACTORS ONLY: sign up for a time slot on the drama club bulletin board outside of
room 402. Fill out the audition sheet, staple on a picture and bring it with you to
the audition, and prepare one of the monologues given in this packet. DONT
FORGET TO BRING A PICTURE!
Auditions for acting will be performed for the casting panel.
The day the cast list is posted the panel will stay after school to discuss any
concerns or questions with auditioners. Students are strongly encouraged to meet
with the panel as it is a rare opportunity to get feedback on your audition.
Oct. 14th there will be a read-through for all actors and they should bring their
signed contract with them to the read through.

What THE PANEL is Looking For:

These plays have many challenges, we are looking for strong actors that:

Make bold choices in the monologues & scenes

Projection & voices that we can hear and understand
Strong physical presence so we see the character not your nerves
Mime so we really can imagine the props
Make us laugh

Audition meeting & practice all auditioning actors are invited

Tuesday Sept. 30th
Memorize and practice one of the following monologues.
Also have prepared the Subtext Scene with a partner.
Good luck, and thank you for auditioning!
Prepare the following scene by adding in subtext. Subtext is what the
person is thinking but doesnt say. Subtext makes this scene different
for each group that does it. Decide who you are, where you are and
what just happened and how you feel about the other person.
A: Hi.
B: Hello.
A: Nice View.
B: Just look at those clouds.
A: Is it time?
B: Nice shirt.
A: Really?

AUDITION MONOLOGUES: (CHOSE ONE)

Sam (Dances throughout monologue, and the dances keep changing)
Heres my problem. I cant stop dancing. I dont know how it happened but one
day my hand shot up and started going like this and whats worse it was while I
was at my favorite Uncle Sids funeral. So embarrassing, they thought I was
raising my hand to ask a question, like I had to go to the bathroom, but then I
started full on dancing. Its hard to drive like this, so I now walk everywhere
well dance, actually. I dont want a cure, I lost 100 pounds and have my own
work out video online with 3 million followers but I justIm so lonely. So Doc,
do you know of anyone who has this, this disease? Anyone?
Jo (bumps into person s/he likes in Barnes & Noble, nervous)
Hey, youre in my Spanish class. Hola. (awkward pause) SoYou like our
teacher? Yeah, shes kinda cray-cray. I dont know a word shes saying. Do you?
She talks so fast. I um, Id love, I mean, I wouldnt mind studying for the test
with someone. You know, if you want to. If youre not busy. Because youre
probably busy. Because I am. Totally busy. But uh, if you want to estudio
Espanol. That means study. No, I dont think youre stupid. WaitI like your
hair! (to self) Yeah, that went well.
Devon My fellow classmates, it has come to my attention that not one of you has
signed up to be on prom committee. Yes, it is true that some say I am a taskmaster. I say, whatever, I get results. Four people were on the committee and
they all quit. I assure you that it wasnt my fault. Is it my fault that they
couldnt meet every day after school and they didnt respond to my texts at all
hours of the night? Dont you want the best night of your life? Is it my fault that
I have the best ideas and need minions to follow through with the plan? Look, if
you have a better idea come up here right now. I dare you.
MICKY (Miming building a card house. Its getting pretty tall.)
Shhh. Nobody move. Nobody breathe. Im going for the record. Stop it Tina
Mom! Shes going to ruin it! No! You ruined it! I hate you. Why cant you let
me do anything by myself? I dont need a little kid hanging around me all the
time. Oh, dont cry. I dont really hate you. Youre just annoying thats all. Its
what little sisters are. Theyre annoying. Just kidding. Come on, want to play
(card game) Go Fish?

If you are cast, come to rehearsal Oct. 14th. Bring your signed contract & before

CJHS DRAMA CLUB PLAY CONTRACT

All students who participate in the after school plays at CJHS must sign this contract and their parents sign as well.
All contracts are due at the first rehearsal, failure to turn in a signed contract will result in inability to participate that
day and eventually will lead to dismissal from the play.
By signing this contract you agree to the following rules of behavior. Any violation of these rules may result in your
immediate dismissal from the play (though we will try to give one warning first).
The Cast & Crew Will:
2. Be at all rehearsals ON TIME. Lateness for any reason must be okayed by the director ahead of time.
3. Notify the director AT LEAST one week prior to any known absence. Exceptions are made for illness but
excessive absences will result in dismissal from the play (a play is a team sport, if you are not there - for
whatever reason - it hurts everyone in the cast).
4. No one may leave the auditorium for any reason once rehearsal has begun without notifying the director or
stage manager.
5. Students are expected to maintain their grades. The play is not an excuse for not doing the work required in
your classes.
6. Students are expected to be prepared for rehearsals, and to follow all instructions given by staff members
INCLUDING STAGE MANAGERS.
7. If a student has a problem with another actor in the cast or their performance they are expected to speak to the
director about it, do not give another actor acting notes or suggestions.
8. All actors are to be respectful when addressing concerns with any staff member. Do not tell the costumer that
you arent wearing something because you dont like it. If there is a legitimate problem you may address it
respectfully and tactfully and your concerns will be taken into account. The directors have final say.
9. All actors agree that they will not write nasty things about the play or fellow cast members on their
twitter, instagram, facebook, blog, or Instant Messages. Read that again. If you dont like an actor or
the play or the staff, find ways to cope. Discussing it with Ms. Elson is a good place to start. If you find it
unbearable or irresolvable on your own, dont write about it for everyone to see and create a situation where
your ranting can cause pain, suffering, and bring down the morale of the cast. This is divisive and damaging
to a show. So read it again, and think before you sign this contract. If your on-line activity causes
problems in the cast or morale of the show you WILL be replaced.
10. NO ACTOR WILL GET THEIR HAIR CUT, COLORED, OR STYLED ONCE CAST WITHOUT
DISCUSSING IT WITH THE DIRECTOR AND COSTUMER FIRST.
11. No one is excused for any reason from rehearsal in the month of November (fall play) or March (spring
Musical). PARENTS: Make doctors appointments, etc. with this in mind.
12. All Actors will be memorized by the off-book date. They may call for line after that but no scripts will be
allowed on the stage.
13. All actors should be aware that their attendance and lateness are tracked, and may result in dismissal from
the show and / or may affect future casting decisions.
I have read these rules and agree to follow them at all times during the rehearsal process
