OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES OF DIFFERENTIALLYABLED PERSON

Bachelor of Secondary Education
Major in MAPE

Today, one

of

is employment.

the

major problems of the Philippines

Most of the Filipinos have

from different degrees or

graduated

vocational training skills,

but most of them experiences difficulties in getting a job. If

such persons were getting difficulties
more

to

persons
called

those persons with

with

physical

differentially-

opportunities await them

severe

finding a job, what

disabilities

or

impairment more commonly

abled
in

person

(DAP)?

What

terms of employment?

Based on the observation of the researchers of this

study, the DAPs claims to equality and non-discrimination
which is

already embodied in law which is the R.A. 7277 of

Magna Carta for Disabled Persons. But this law, seems to be

not implemented. Most of the persons without disabilities
often make some criticisms against DAPs because persons
without disabilities thought that the DAPs are people who
were not able to do activities, at pair with the able ones.
Ganaden (1998) stated that many DAPs
experiencing

difficulty in

have been

getting a job because of the

discriminatory practices

against

those

who

have

physical disabilities. He also stated that some companies

or employers,

hiring

differentially-abled persons

difficult to handle because

their

ability to do a

is

job is

limited especially if establishments do not provide any

accessible features. There is a misconception
cannot

deliver

that

they

efficient services and would therefore

affect the generation of the companys income.

The

researchers

Opportunities of
the

DAPs

know

chose

the

title

Occupational

Differentially-abled Persons to know if

what

occupational

opportunities

are

available to them. Based on the observation of the

researchers, many of the DAPs are victims of discrimination
and other companies didnt accept them
their

physical

because

of

appearance thats why the researchers

wanted to know more about the problem encountered by

the differentially-abled person.

Persons with disabilities were coined differentiallyabled persons because

these

persons were able to do

things differently but still can carry on a task which people

thought they cant do. Perhaps these persons have some
great and hidden skills which are worth discovering.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This

study

opportunities

aims

to

determine

the

of differentially-abled persons

occupational
who

were

employed in Quezon City during the academic year 2015

2016.

Specifically,

this

study

sought answers to the

following questions:
1. How may the respondents be described in terms of:
1.1
1.2
1.3
1.4
1.5
2. What

age
gender
highest educational attainment
skills/trainings
nature of impairment of the respondents
are

the

occupational

opportunities

of

the

respondents?
3. What challenges are encountered by the respondents
in their
employment and how were these addressed?

RESEARCH DESIGN
The researchers utilized the Mixed Method Approach.
According to Cresswell (2003), Mixed Method Research
Design is used to overcome a single design to explain and
to interpret the data, to explore the phenomenon, to
develop and test a new instrument, to serve a theoretical

perspective, to complement the strength of a single design,

to overcome the weaknesses of a single design, to address
a question at different levels and to address a theoretical
perspective at different levels. As a method, it focuses on
collecting, analyzing, and mixing both quantitative and
qualitative data in a single study or series of studies. Its
central premise is that use of quantitative and qualitative
approaches in combination provides a better understanding
of research problems than either approach alone.

RESPONDENTS
The subjects of this study are thirty (30) differentiallyabled

persons

currently

employed

from

different

government and non-government companies in Quezon

City. The thirty (30) differentially-abled persons were
composed of twenty one (21) male and nine (9) female. The

researchers were confident that this specific number of

respondents can substantially represent the information
needed in the study.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES
According to Paul Oliver (2006) a purposive sampling is a
form

of

non-probability

sampling

in

which

decisions

concerning the individuals to be included in the sample are

taken by the researchers, based upon a variety of criteria
which may include specialist knowledge of the research
issue, or capacity and willingness to participate in the
research. Some types of research design necessitate
researchers

taking

participants who

decision

about

the

individual

would be most likely to contribute

appropriate data, both in terms of relevance and depth.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
Based on the gathered data, the researchers came up
with the following findings:

1.1 Ages 18-23 with the frequency of nine (9) or 30

percent.
1.2 Male are of twenty-one (21) or 70 percent.
1.3 Both college Undergraduate and College Graduate
are tie for 10 or 33.33 percent.
1.4 twenty-one (21) or 28 percent of the respondents
have skills in singing.
1.5 Impaired Lower Extremities is fourteen (14) or 46.67
percent.

CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings of the study, the following
conclusions were strained:

1. The ages from 18 -50 were the ages that people can
work hard and more aggressive.

Male differentially-abled

persons has a high percentage in number than female

differentially-abled persons.
Not all the DAPs finish their bachelors degree, most of them
are under-graduate. But all of the respondents have been
experienced schooling and all of them are working. The
trainings and seminars attended by the respondents are
appropriate to their present job. But few of them weren't
attended any trainings and seminars, but instead they used
their skills to find a job. Even if the DAPs have a physical
impairment, they can work as a person without disability
can do.
2. There's a lot of occupational opportunities for
differentially-abled persons which are masseur, office aide,
secretary,

welder,

vendor,

encoder,

janitor,

musician,

beautician, auto mechanic and other job that is suitable to

their qualification.

3.

The

respondents

have

different

problems

encountered during their pre-employment and present job.

But they have different ways to address and face those
problems.

RECOMMENDATIONS
In consideration of the summary of findings and
conclusions of the study, the researchers hereby proposed
the following recommendations.
1. Differentially-abled persons should pursue to finish
their study to have many occupational opportunities and
Educated

person

should

not

discriminate

DAPs.

And

Government should conduct a trainings and seminars

exclusively for differentially-abled persons to develop their
skills.
2. Differentially-abled persons should set their goals
and always believe that impairment is not matter to
achieve their dreams.

3. DAPs should not be affected to the critics and

unequal treatment they encountered, instead they
continue what they are doing as long as they are not
humiliating other people.
