HAIR CARE SALON BUSINESS AND

THE UNTAPPED OPPORTUNITY
Today's growing salon industry has opened up new opportunity to
achieve real financial independence by owning a successful salon.
Indeed, more and more salon professionals are selling their salons and
retiring as multi-millionaires which only happened in a few rare cases
twenty years ago. The rules of the road on the journey of salon success
have changed considerably as has the definition of success in the salon
industry. Yesterday's salon owner strived to make a good living and be the
star in their successful salon. Today's salon owner strives to build real
value and retire financially independent so they can travel the world and
enjoy the fruits of their risk and hard work.
The modern salon owner is far more entrepreneurial, creative, savvy, and
innovative than their predecessors. There is almost universal agreement
amongst today's young salon-trepreneurs that yesterday's rules to
running a salon will, at best, only lead to providing a good living. But, to
achieve the kind of success that is available in today's thriving and everchanging salon industry, salon owners have to master this new set of
rules.
MAKE MARKETING A CENTRAL PART OF YOUR PLAN
To have a successful salon, you have to have loyal clients who receive
real value from your services and feel an affinity to your brand and ethos.
To far too many salon owners, marketing means advertising. Avoid this
mistake. According to the Marketing Association, marketing is the
Marketing is the set of activities for creating, communicating,
delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for clients.

Once In A While

Your marketing strategy should include equal parts of advertising,

promotion, and communication. Advertising is media that is paid for in
efforts of attracting clients to your salon. Examples of advertising
initiatives would be placing a print ads in your local newspaper, renting a
billboard, or running an ads campaign on your local radio station.
Promotion is efforts that don't necessarily require paid media, but attract
new clients through more creative means. Examples of communication
would be ensuring you have visible and attractive signage, issuing press
releases about noteworthy events to your local newspapers, and have a
easy to find website that is listed in all of the local directories.
IDENTIFY YOUR NICHE
For most salons, traditional advertising is extremely difficult and will
have limited returns. The primary reason for this is the competitive
landscape that many salons face where too many salons provide almost
identical services and a competing for a limited number of clients. To
advertise successfully, a salon must develop USP's (Unique Selling
Propositions). In other words, you must have something different that
you are offering or no matter how attractive your ad is, your salon is
going to look like all of the others. Most salon experts say that unless you
have a highly specialized or differentiating offering, you are better off not
advertising at all. Unfortunately, we agree.
BE SAVVY ABOUT YOUR PRICES
One of the most common misconceptions of the Salon Industry is that is
salons raise their prices, they might scare new clients away. While this is
normally true in most industries, savvy salon owners have realized that
higher prices on their services menu allows them to provide more
attractive discounts in their promotional programs.
For example, if you increase the prices on your services menu by 20%,
but offer a 20% discount for friends and family of current clients, you
have increased the perceived value of your services, increased client
loyalty from your referral network, and allow for higher prices from
potential new clients whose perception of higher value in your services
has been driven by the positive remarks of your loyal clients. While we
do not recommend increasing your service prices to some unreasonable
amount, we have found that almost all salons would benefit from
adopting this approach to some extent so long as the service price
increases are reasonable.

HUMAN
HAIR
STRAIGHT TALK
BRITAIN BUYS ALMOST 43 MILLION WORTH
OF HUMAN HAIR A YEAR

Report shows how every day, up to 4,000 women visit the temple
to take part in a religious ceremony, called tonsuring, during
which they shave off their hair as a sacrifice to the god Vishnu.

BUT ITS DISMAYINGLY HARD TO FIND OUT WHO IT COMES FROM

he modern market for extensions made of real human hair is

growing at an incredible rate. In 2013, 42.8 million worth of
human hair was imported into the UK, padded out with a little bit
of animal hair. That's a thousand metric tons and, end to end,
almost 80 million miles of hair, or if you prefer, two million heads
of 50cm long hair. And our hair industry pales in comparison with
that of the US.
Hair extensions have become huge of the last few years and we
all love to add a little length to glam up our look for a big night outbut have you ever wondered where that hair really comes from?
"It's horse hair," swears my friend, "Or from dead people.
Honestly who would really cut off all their own hair if it was that
long?" Well he's wrong. There are in fact thousands of people
around the world who do just that every day and they don't always
get paid for it.
The best quality hair comes from Asian or Eastern European
countries where poverty is high and work is poorly paid. These
women often see selling their hair as the best way to make
money and feed their families. The 'hair factories' are very
serious when they sign women into a contract to grow their hair a
certain length and have strict conditions under which the hair
must grow. The women- and sometimes whole families- must
keep their hair away from any contact with pollutants and make
sure it is kept in top condition while to grows.
Sometimes the factories even provide food for it's workers to
ensure that the hair grows to a good enough standard.
When the time comes
for the hair to be
harvested the women
line up at the factory
before their heads are
shaved completely
bald and they are sent
out to start the whole
process again.
This may seem like a
girl's worst nightmare
to you but for many of
these women it is the
easiest and most effective way of providing for their family and
the alternatives are much worse. However not all hair 'donors'
benefit financially from such a huge sacrifice. In some parts of
India women are conned out of their precious locks without even
knowing they are then being sold to beef up the hair of beauty
conscious women around the world.
Two questions spring to mind: first, who is supplying all this hair
and, secondly, who on earth is buying it? Unsurprisingly, both
sides of the market are cagey. Nobody wants to admit precisely
where they are importing hair from and women with extensions
like to pretend their hair is their own.
Websites selling human hair will occasionally explain that the
locks come from religious tonsure ceremonies in India, where
women willingly swap hair in return for a blessing.

These women believe that taking part in the ceremony is a sign

that they are willing to give up their pride and e future- but what
they don't know is they are also making a lot of money for those
who run the temple. After the ceremony all the hair that is
collected is combed, sorted into lengths and dyed before being
shipped to Western countries to sell as wigs and hair extentions.
So while we see our extensions as a great way to give us a beauty
boost and make us feel great as we hit the town- there is in fact a
much bigger human story behind every lock of hair.

At Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in southern India, tonsuring is

customary and it's one of the most-visited holy sites in the world,
so there's plenty of hair to flog.
This has been described as 'happy hair' and it's certainly an
acceptable story to tell your client as you glue another woman's
dead hair to her scalp. But countries like Russia, China, Ukraine,
Peru and Brazil also export large amounts of hair, so where's that
from? The reality behind this hair is probably a grim one. There
are reports of female prisoners and women in labour camps
being forced to shave their heads so those in charge can sell it off.
Even if the women aren't coerced, no one can be sure that the
hair's original owner received a fair or any price.
It's a strange anomaly in a world in which we're all obsessed with
fair trade and ethical sourcing: nobody seems at all bothered
about the origins of their extra hair. But then, the market is hard to
regulate and the supply chain is convoluted. Bundles of hair can
pass through a number of different countries, which makes it hard
to keep tabs on. Then the branding comes in: Chinese hair is
marketed as Brazilian, Indian as European. The fact that some
websites won't disclose where their hair comes from is
significant.
Human hair is source 'all over eastern Europe' and most develop
country, but 'we would not know specifically'. A few 'ethical'
extension companies exist, but in most cases, the customer just
doesn't want to know where the hair is harvested.
How To Distinguish Human And Artificial Hair:
'Human hair will turn to ash, it will smell foul. When burning, the
human hair will show white smoke. Synthetic hair will be a sticky
ball after burning.' As well as not melting, human hair styles
better. Accept no imitations, ladies.

TRUTH & SECRET

IS YOUR BRAZILIAN HAIR REALLY COME FROM BRAZIL?
The Biggest Scheme And Scam In The Virgin Human Hair Industry

Customers think it's a new product and so they are going to buy it
and try it at least once. He added that manufacturers loose 15-20
percent of each hair bundle during the wefting process, which is
most commonly done in mainland China due to cheap labor.

I am a known hair extension fanatic. I love my pure-virgin-remy-

They don't waste anything; they find a way to use even the
refused hair. They take refused hair and [hair lost from] shedding
and mix it with Chinese hair,.

ave you ever wondered if your weave hair really comes

from India? Or Brazil? Or Mongolia? Or Peru? Well, sorry
to break it to you, but most likely it does not. The human
hair trade is a growing and very lucrative industry. With sales
exceeding 12 billion dollars a year, customers should look out for
scams and marketing ploys of every kind.

premium-raw-unprocessed human hair just like every other

hairlista out there, but spending hard-earned coins on bad quality
hair one too many times has made users extremely skeptical of
every beauty supply store and wholesaler out there. As a result, I
went on a quest to find out where this exotic hair really comes
from. I sat down for an one-on-one interview with Los Angelesbased Indian hair importer and salesman to get the scoop on
some of the biggest hair scams and how to look out for them.
The bigger conspirators are beauty supply stores. They bring
Chinese hair. They call it Indian hair because it is an easier way to
sell it, he explained. They have different names for it. Whenever
they exhaust one name they tag on another name.
So, at the moment they have Brazilian hair, they have Peruvian
hair, Indonesian hair, they have Malaysian hair, Italian and
French too.

What's the likelihood that Brazilian tresses actually came from

the South American country? It's a very, very unlikely thing
because I export to Brazil from India directly, Why would Brazil
buy hair from India?
The only place in the world that has commercial quantities of hair
is from one billion people in India, and they, as a ritual, donate it to
the temple. Hindu pilgrims have donated their hair in a ritual of
purification for centuries.
It's a symbol of religious devotion and surrender of the ego that
has also turned into an extraordinary economic resource. The
temple realizes, 'Oh, there is a lot of money in this,' and they
started doing contracts with people. It started way back,
You bid, the companies with other bidders, and you get the
contract for a year or a season. And then all the hair that comes to
you in that time belongs to you.

HAIR
THEBLACK
INDUSTRY

Secrets Behind

Brazilians do not sell their hair, nor do they cut it for profit or
religion. It would be impossible for enough hair to be cut in the
Brazilian community in abundance to provide for the world.
There are no large-scale Brazilian temples shaving hair, she
wrote. There are some temples around the world that shave hair
like the huge ones in India. Some of these countries are
Indonesia, Bangladesh, etc. But volumes from these countries
are small. Moore is a self-proclaimed international human hair
expert.

ather around kiddos, we're about to educate you on some real

issue; the black hair industry. We know many of you, especially
guys, some girls, and many white people, are just mind-fret by some
black girls hair. One day your girl is rocking some luscious, long hair
down her back, and then next month you see her in some braids and then
all of it's a poofy afro. The black hair industry is a whole another world
that people fail to know about.
There's science, art, and of
course money in this world
black hair. Almost
worth 10 million dollars,
the black hair
industry is damn near
close to the porn
industry.
So we're going to
break it down
for you and
hopefully give
you a better
understanding,
so grab a seat and
maybe even a
pen. Ok we'll start
with the most
natural state and
most recent
trend in the
black hair
c o m m u n i t y.
You may have
seen many
people using the
terms I'm
going natural
or I'm
natural or even
I ' m
transitioning.
Natural
hair consists of
the state
where an African
America
n's hair has been
untouched and by untouched we mean no perms (chemical
straighteners), flat irons, curling irons, absolutely nothing. That afro
you may see often is very tight coiled, kinky curls. But that's not what
natural hair only is.
Styles such as dread locs, twists out, bantu knots, curls (some may have
more defined curls than others), etc. are all styles that are in the form of
the natural state. The increase of natural girls has been rapidly growing;
And with the rise of natural beauties, tons of natural hair companies are
also emerging. Natural hair isn't the easiest thing to maintain and it takes
time, patience and a lot of care. These natural hair companies have
designed products to make the hair softer, manageable and also define
those tight curls.

So how do you know if your luscious extensions are the real

deal? Selva said initially it is very difficult to tell the difference
between Chinese and Indian hair because manufacturers put
silicone and other things to make it very smooth.
From the wash you can tell. Chinese and the Korean
manufacturers have different tricks up their sleeve. They put a
coating over the hair so the hair doesn't tangle in the first wash.
As soon as you heat it that coating goes away and then it starts
tangling, he explained. The Chinese makes sure that hair is
sealed with chemicals so it's fantastic when you pass your
fingers through. But as soon as you wash or put any heat to it, it
goes away.
Real Indian hair, he says, won't tangle. It can't tangle because
the cuticles are all in one direction, he noted. Hair that is raw,
when you say raw hair, you cut it from the base of the scalp and
bundle it up. That's how it comes from the temple.
That's how we get it directly. In the warehouse we do a little bit of
combing, we take out the short hair and wefted the rest of the hair.
If you cut it and don't turn directions that's why they put so many
rubber bands so it won't get twisted up. It has to be machined in
the same way. If you changed directions it will tangle.

So I'm sure you've

heard of the Brazilians,
Malaysians Peruvian,
Eurasian, the list goes
on and on. These are
your higher end hair,
where people are
spending anywhere
from 100 dollars and up
for a bundle (three
bundles is usually a full
head of weave). So
that's about at least 300
dollars alone on hair.
The hair, which is
actual human hair, is
coming from overseas
mostly from Indian
temples. So no Brazilian hair is not from Brazil, people. The hair is
usually titled virgin which basically means it has not been touched
chemically and is 100% natural. This hair acts just like normal hair and
can last from 6 months to a couple of years if maintained well. But of
course you have to get in re installed a few times.
Whew that was alot. We haven't even talked about the costs of going to
the salon to properly use some of these products. That's an additional
forty to hundreds a dollars a month to actually get your hair done! We
can go on and on about the black hair world, but that's all the time we
have folks. So we hope you learned a few things and maybe you can
make sense of this pat we always do!

TIPS ON HOW TO MAINTAIN

LONG HAIR
HEALTHY AND SHINY

hile long hair can be your best asset, it can also be your
biggest headache, because long hair needs to be looked after.
The longer your hair, the more prone to damage it is, but that
doesn't mean that you have to go rushing for the scissors!
Just follow these simple tips and it will help keep your beautiful long
locks at the peak of health and looking wonderful:
1. Don't go overboard on hair products
Our first tip on how to keep long hair healthy and shiny is don't overdo
it with hair products. Long hair is heavier than short hair and if you get a
build-up of products in your hair, then it is going to weigh down your
hair even further and make it look flat and lifeless. Be especially careful
of products that contain silicone. These may make your hair look
shinier, when first used, but they can build up on your hair and, over
time, actually dry your hair out.
2. Invest in a good hairbrush
You have a lot of hair to brush,
so it's well worth buying a
quality hairbrush for your hair.
The best kind to buy are natural
bristle brushes with rounded
bristles and look for a brush that
is firm but still gentle enough
that it won't pull on your hair
too much. It's also worth having
a wide toothed comb for
painlessly easing out any
tangles.
3. Air-dry your hair, when
possible
The best way to dry your hair is
to let it dry naturally. Too much
heat can damage any type of
hair, but when you have long hair, it is even more tempting to turn dryers
up to full blast to get the job done quicker. It's far better to gently pat
your hair dry with a towel and let the fresh air do the rest.

6. Choose hair products wisely

Choose hair products that match
your hair type and, wherever
possible, choose products that
contain natural ingredients.
Quite simply, with long hair,
there is more hair on display, so if
it is damaged, then it will be more
apparent. Check with your
hairdresser for their
recommendations, but it is the
harsh ingredients, such as
sulphates, that you should be
avoiding.
7. Don't color your hair too
often
Hair dyes contain many harsh
chemicals that can damage your hair, so the best advice is to stick with
the colour that nature gave you. If you do colour your hair, then only
have it done when it really needs it, and avoid the temptation to change
your hair colour too often, just because you're bored, especially avoid
colours that need bleach.
8. Less washing, more conditioning
Our next tip on how to keep long hair healthy and shiny is wash less,
condition more. Most people are guilty of washing their too often, but a
daily wash will strip all the natural oils from hair and leave it dry and
flat. Try washing your hair just twice a week. Use a quality conditioner
and remember to give your hair a good, but gentle brush, to spread your
natural oils along the whole length of your hair.
9. Be kind and gentle to your hair
Above all else, another important tip on how to keep long hair healthy is
be kind and gentle to your hair and love it. Long hair is more prone to
breaking and splitting, especially when it is wet. Never dry your hair
roughly with a towel and remember to protect it from long exposure to
sunlight and wind, and never tie it up in a ponytail when it's wet.
10. Eat healthy and drink plenty of water
It's boring, but it's true, you need to have a healthy diet to keep long hair
looking beautiful. You need protein for hair growth, and plenty of
vitamins A, C and E to keep your hair shiny. Don't forget to drink plenty
of water too, your hair needs hydrating as well.

4. Trim your hair regularly

Another tip on how to keep long hair healthy is regular trimming.
Though the myth that cutting your hair makes it grow faster isn't true, it
does help to keep your long hair looking neat and tidy. You should be
getting a trim every six to eight weeks to trim off any split ends and keep
your hair looking smart.

HUMAN HAIR EXTENSION TRADING

5. Don't wear your hair too tight

Sever, tight styles like ponytails or braids can damage long hair and the
safest style for long hair is just to let it down.
You can keep your hair off your face by using headbands, but if you
keep tying up your hair, you will damage it.

LONG HAIR

Growing pains? Totally unnecessary.

Getting and keeping shiny, sexy, long hair
has never been easier.

CUT IT MORE OFTEN

"The ends of long hair have been styled and colored
so many times that they get dry and frizzy quickly,"
Ask your stylist to snip less than a half inch every
other month (since your hair grows faster than, you
won't lose any real length). If you wait too much
longer between cuts, split ends could resplit, which
means you'll have to trim away more later on.

PREVENT SPLIT ENDS IN YOUR SLEEP

Satin and 600-thread-count cotton pillowcases create less friction than
ordinary cotton ones, so your hair will be less likely to tangle or break
when you toss and turn.
Another option: Tie your hair into a loose loop on the very top of your
head with a scarf or scrunchie. (Yes, they still exist, and they don't stress
or crease your hair the way elastics can.)

LESS IS MORE
It doesn't take that much effort to make all that hair look good.
In fact, you can get away with blow-drying just your volumizer-coated
roots as long as you mist the ends with a texturizing spray.
Unless your hair air-dries perfectly straight or wavy (and you're a
Disney princess), that beachy wave makes all the difference. "A natural
texture that's neither straight nor wavy can appear too flat and messy".

CUT IT RIGHT
If your hair is in that awkward growing-out
stage, ask your stylist for long layers that skim
the bottom of your cut. "Long layers in the front
give you the illusion of length". If you already
have the length, it's sexiest when the back falls
into a soft V shape that starts with face-framing
layers at your cheekbones (to thin a round face)
or chin (to soften a square jaw). From there, you
want blended layers down to the ends. Your ends
should come to a gradual point in the middle of
your back. "The shape and layers keep thick hair
from looking heavy on the bottom and add body to fine hair".

DRY SHAMPOO AND DRY CONDITIONER

Yes, dry conditioner is a thing and you'll be happy that you know about
it on day three of a blowout. Your ends start
to look dry right around the same time your
roots get oily. Spritz a dry conditioner, like
Oribe Soft Dry Conditioner Spray, over
your length but never the crown, and focus
on the ends to make them shiny and soft. As
for dry shampoo, it's a lot easier on hair than
cleaning the old-school way, which strips
away natural oils along with dirt. Mist it on
your roots and massage it into your hair
with your fingertips. Then do the same
thing on the pieces around your face. "Long
hair is so heavy that it gets weighed down
easily, and the dry shampoo will also add volume".

ADD COLOR
It's no secret that long gray hair looks a little nutso.
But long hair that's all one nongray color isn't so
pretty, either: "Without subtle highlights, really long
hair looks too heavy and solid like a blanket," says
hairstylist Garren. "If you're growing your hair out,
you want your ends to be lightest.

TAKE A PILL
Models take biotin and Viviscalfor more
luscious hair like it's their job. And it kind of is.
And it kind of works. "Certain supplements
really do promote hair growth, and the B
vitamin biotin is one of my favorites".
You would have to take 5,000 micrograms
(some pills contain that amount) a day for
about three to six months before you'd notice a
difference, but "studies have shown that biotin
elongates the hair follicle, which makes hair
grow faster. It also stimulates the cells that
cause your hair to grow".
The clinical studies on Viviscal, a brand of
vitamin that contains amino acids and marine extracts, are less
conclusive, but the anecdotal evidence is emphatic. "I believe in
Viviscal", "I've seen it give women who are in their 40s or 50s and
experiencing thinning noticeably thicker hair.

AVOID TOPKNOTS
Sorry, but "when you've got a ton of hair, a big knot isn't
proportional to your face". "The ideal spot for a bun or
chignon is at the nape of your neck anything in between
there and the crown looks matronly.

GIVE IT A BOOST
Long hair is heavy. "Without a volumizer, the roots will fall flat". After
every shampoo, massage an apricot-size dollop of lightweight into the
roots while they're damp to give hair some lift without turning it
crunchy even if your hair is thick and you've never needed to use a
volumizer before.
Skip the strong stuff, though. "Strong-hold styling products actually
weigh down long hair".

BUSINESS START-UP GUIDE

OPPORTUNITY CHALLENGES

BUSINESS STRATEGY
OPPORTUNITY:
Considering that it may not cost more than a few thousands
to set up a hair care and hair baring salon, the business offers
many opportunities to make a lot of money.
For instance, selling clippers, shaving powder, shaving
stick, attachment, shampoo,
aftershave, barbing
equipments and other hair care accessories as well as the
normal hair care services means that this business isn't
limited in terms of how much money can be made.
But more importantly is the opportunity to make a lot of
money from being exceptionally professional and
organized, word spreads fast and with barbing excellent
referrals from customers can do a lot of good in terms of
winning patronage and increasing sales.

TIPS
This is a beauty business; you're expected to look
your best! Have in your procedures manual what you
expect as a minimum in grooming for all staff and set
a good example yourself.
Why not try holding some sort of opening event?
Consider providing training classes on a regular basis to
your personnel to improve their product knowledge and
skills as well as awareness to trends.
At the beginning you may not be able to pay big salaries
to staff, but there are many other things you can do to
create a "feel good" factor.
Be reasonable about time off and take time to devise a
time in lieu give and take system for example, staff can
take time off and then pay it back during busy periods.
Have a staff night out every two to three months a pizza
and wine night won't cost much but creates a real team
feeling.
Introduce a commission-based system so staff are
motivated to grow your clientele. Set up your salary
system and holiday system so that staff get paid on time
and up to date, and can check their time off
entitlements. These are all small things but they make a
big difference to staff.
Create monthly contests amongst the staff and offer
prizes from free product to a paid day off to a yearly
contest that would afford the winner a free vacation.
Buy good equipment and hire able competent
employees to work at your salon.

CHALLENGES:
The problem of electricity supply and having fuel for
generating sets to power the barbing salon is the obvious
challenge. In most parts of Nigeria, electricity supply is
usually less than 10 hours a day making cost of doing
business to be unnecessarily high.
When the business becomes more stable and profitable one
would expect the business to expand, unfortunately capital
to fund growth is not readily available but with micro
finance banks this is gradually changing for the better.
BUSINESS STRATEGY:
The key thing is to stay focused on what works and what
doesn't. Imagine a situation where the strategy should be to
do something useful that no other person is doing at least in
your own locality that will at least offer the intending
investor an edge over the competition.
For instance, if other barbing salons don't offer the customer
much in terms of quality service, more fashionable
environment and professional looking staff or workers.

WARNING
You need to be aware of the liabilities that you and your
business can be subjected to as a result of accidents and
botched procedures (from rashes resulting from improper
waxing procedure to damaged hair). Check with your
insurance company on policies that can protect you and
your business from liability and lawsuits that may arise
from customer complaints.
Have a procedures manual, a good salary system, contracts
for staff and make sure you are compliant with your current
employment legislation. If you have your paperwork in
order then should any dispute arise it will be a lot easier for
your to deal with it.
