CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

The industrial attachment training is an essential component of the curriculum of

Kabarak University, Faculty of Mathematics and Computing Sciences. The
attachment period is usually a minimum of eight weeks and even more than that
depending on the industrial requirements. During this period student are expected
to acquire the necessary additional practical experience to supplement their course
of study in the university. They are also exposed to the real world of work and
challenges which prepares them towards their future career.
Therefore, this report is the outcome of the eight weeks practical training I had at
the Kisumu International Airports.
It is said to be a supervised programme since lecturers from the required Faculty
visit the student at the end of the programme to ascertain the success of the
programme and the amount of seriousness students attached to it.

Objectives of the industrial attachment

Some of the importance of industrial attachment is as follows;
To assess the interest of the student in the occupation he/she plans to
undertake.
To expose the students to work methods not taught in the University and to
provide access to products equipment not normally available in the
environment of the University.
To provide the students with an opportunity to apply knowledge in real work
situation thereby closing the gap between University work and the actual
practice.
To make the transition from school to the world of work smoothly and to
enhance student contacts for job placement.
To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in institutional activities and in
the entire educational process of preparing the students for employment in
industry.
To enhance industrys satisfaction with the graduate of the Faculty in particular
and the University at large.

Benefits to the student

The industrial attachment seek to offer students a practical translation of the theory
they have been taught. It has also got individual benefit of liaising the university to
the industries, hence brightening the employment chances of the students in the
university. Through this attachment, I have generated a good interpersonal
relationship through my interaction with my supervisors and colleagues. This has
assisted me to interact confidently with people irrespective of the position.

Moral Education
Working in the Kisumu International Airport exposes one to various system
interactions and employees/stuff. It has therefore inculcated in me the ability to
work under different departments and interact with different computer oriented
systems as well as organizational stuffs.

Methodology
In order to ensure the success and effectiveness of this work I adopted the following
methods.
Observation
This method was used to study some of the activities that go on in different
departments such as; workers customer relation, punctuality, workers attitudes
towards work and the monitoring of staff.
Participation
This method was used to acquire knowledge on the use of computer software,
network, computer hardware such as printers, scanners and the CCTV cameras
Through interaction with the staff of the Airport; important information about the
airports activities, services, historical background and the organizational structure
were obtained.
Discussion
This method was employed to gather information on some of the activities going on
in the airport. This discussion was done with both the stuffs and fellow students
under the attachment.
Research Limitations

Busy schedules of the staff made it difficult for discussions and explanations to be
asked for. Inadequate number of computers at the unit was also a hindrance.

CHAPTER 3: ATTACHMENT DETAILS

Work Experience
Through my attachment, I have gained some new experiences in software
upgrading, installations and maintenance as well as networking and data analysis

on the computer presentation. I have also learnt teamwork within an organization

within different departments. I also learnt different hardware maintenance such as
printers, scanners and normal desktops which has aided me to improve on my
computer skills.
Relationship with the Staffs
Interaction with both senior and junior members of the organization was both
interesting as well as challenging. Some staff members were very friendly and
helpful which was more of importance towards my internship within the
organization.

Challenges and their Solutions

Challenges
Size of the ICT office
The Kisumu International ICT office is very small based on the number of the
students under the attachment. This makes it difficult for the normal daily operation
of the ICT activities within the organization to take place as expected.
Student Orientation Programme
There is poor form of orientation for students coming for attachment which makes it
difficult for students to get well acquainted with the environment as well as different
departments.
Poor Staff Student Relation
Poor communication and relations from some of the staff towards the students
under the attachment; that is some staff take advantage of the students and treat
them/relate to them with little or no respect.
Solutions
Increase the size of the ICT Department

Due to the large number of the students under the attachment, the Airport
management needs to consider giving the ICT department a larger office of
operation. This will quicken the activities being carried out within the department.
Proper student orientation Programme
After calling the qualified students for the attachments, the organization should
provide a mechanism of ensuring all the students for the attachment are properly
oriented into the organization. This will ensure that the students are well acquainted
with the organizational departments, regulations and areas of operations.
Improve staff student relation
Some of the staff should be taught how to relate with fellow colleagues especially
those on attachment to avoid disrespect and taking advantage of trainees.

Advice to the future interns

Industrial attachment is really a very important activity for a student to participate
in as it provides the students with the necessary environment to improve their skills.
The students exposes themselves to the right people who helps them improve on
their career and skills.

CHAPTER 5: RECOMMENDATIONS
The ICT office should be expanded so that more space and computers will be
provided for the trainees to carry out their activities with ease. This will help the
members of the ICT department to work faster.
Students coming for industrial attachment at the hospital should be taken through
some form of orientation to help them have enough knowledge about what they are
about to do.
There should be a laid down procedure for monitoring workers as well as some
motivational packages for workers who establish them self well.

The attachment is very beneficial to students as it assists them to blend academic

work with that of the industry therefore much importance must be given to
attachment by students.
Since the experience for these few weeks was enormous I recommend that the
periods for the attachment should be increased to even take two semesters instead
of one.

CHAPTER 6: CONCLUTION
The compulsory supervised industrial attachment of the university gives students
the opportunity to apply knowledge in real work, exposing students to work
methods not taught in the university and provide access to products equipment not
available in the university as well as assessing students interest in the occupation
he/she plans to undertake, the programme should therefore be maintain and the
period extended.
