Everyman Theatre
wins 2014 WAN Award
The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool from
Haworth Tompkins has been selected as the
winner of the 2014 WAN Performing Spaces
Award.
The judging panel consisted of Flansburgh
Architects president, David Croteau, editor in
chief at WAN, Michael Hammond, architect and
Partner at Allies and Morrison, Paul Appleton,
building and operations director of the Royal
Albert Hall, Chris Cotton and acoustics designer
at Arup, Raj Patel.
Philip Vile
The Everyman is one of the well-known
architectural gems for the city of Liverpool. Originally built in 1837, it was closed in 2011
only to be redeveloped again shortly after. The result is a new, welcoming and inspiring
building acting as a creative hub that includes a 400-seat theatre within the auditorium,
creative workspaces with rehearsal rooms, workshops, a sound studio,
a Writers Room overlooking the foyer and a special studio dedicated to the Young
Everyman Playhouse education and community groups.
Paul Appleton was the first to comment on the merits of the project, noting that:
It was a very brave way to win a competition by reusing the old building, but it has
completely transformed what was originally there. David Croteau added: The house is
pretty cool; it does a great job. In some ways it looks like a palazzo which has this odd
exterior thing, and then you get a beautiful courtyard coming out of it.

hot topic

the brain of a professor

and the back of an ox
Dr Bernard Blain responds to the article entitled Construction Skills Gap - a warning
by Jonathan Seddon which appeared in the May 2014 edition of ABC+D. Dr Blain states
that the entire subject of training for the industry must be influenced by employers on a
regional basis, for example, what is best for industry if it is to attract, train and
retain the right standard of applicant to satisfy customer requirement...

It is a sad indictment of the UKs education system

that it is not producing the right level of work-ready
education/training for young people.
Pledges from Government ministers to restore vocational
subjects to the national curriculum have all come to nothing.
It could be argued that the best environment to learn and
practice skills is a working environment producing real work
in real time i.e. productive training, supplemented
by part-time technical education.
At a time when the nation is short of skilled workers and
employers complain that current school leavers do not have
the necessary employable skills, politicians should take a
positive decision to restore vocational education into the
secondary level curriculum to create a future competent
workforce which will fuel and fund its own individual
aspirations.
Politicians first became interested in vocational training
after a series of poor showings by British firms at international
exhibitions in the 1860s and 1870s. To rectify this, Junior
Technical Schools were introduced in 1913 to be superseded
by Secondary Technical Schools in 1944. Lessons were
taught/delivered to the highest standard
by specialist teachers from various
industries. Employers had an
input into the course content
and respected the outcome.
Unfortunately these
were relatively few
I shall restore to you
in number and shortlived.
the years that the locust

hath eaten
The Book of Joel
2:25

If any new initiative to introduce vocational subjects into

the secondary curriculum is to be saved from the fate of its
predecessors and not appear divisive, the classification should
be universal i.e. O-Levels for academic and vocational
subjects, provided that they meet the aspirations of the pupil
and satisfy the entry requirement of industry.
We should return to the old paths and to the (suitably
amended) vocational studiesof the O-level syllabi which was
then offered by the former Regional Examining Boards. The
syllabi of yester year could be suitably amended to form a
foundation for the current industrial requirement on which to
train the future construction industry work force. One or more
technical subjects could be studied alongside the academic
so that a pupil would not be categorised at an early age.

CR200
Perhaps then, and only then, might the years that the locust
hath eaten be restored.
Vocational education should be carefully planned and made
available to all pupils according to their aspirations, ability
and aptitude. Pupils of high academic ability should not be
denied opportunity because he/she is considered bright.
I quote a acquaintance who claimed that: A carpenter and
joiner must have the brain of a professor and the back
of an ox. I suggest that this statement, which applies to all
craftsmen and operatives, should be the industrys recruiting
slogan and should trumpet the advantages of independence,
variety and satisfaction in skilled production.
Vocational subjects could be delivered at secondary level.
The perceived advantage of housing vocational courses in
comprehensive schools is that every pupil will have sight of
what industry, commerce and the caring professions entail
and what is on offer as a career One seeing is worth one
thousand tellings unlike former days when the earlier
leaving age of 14 or 15 yrs allowed pupils a year or two to try
various occupations before the age of 16 years. (The age still
favoured by some employers for commencing an
apprenticeship). Selecting a career straight from school might
be a daunting task for many of todays pupils. To overcome

this, it might be considered advantageous to introduce a

period of industrial experience in the workplace, although
this might be considered disruptive and costly for employers.
At 13 yrs of age, pupils should, while continuing their
general education, be allowed to opt for an academic or
vocational bias according to their ability, aspirations and
aptitude. The vocational route should provide courses to
satisfy professional/technical and craft institutions at a
national/regional level.
The ladder of progression to higher academic and
professional qualifications should remain. The climb will take
longer for those taking the vocational route but they will have
the advantage of being able to support themselves financially
while on the ladder. Those completing the climb should then
know whether or not a carpenter and joiner or any other
craftsman/technician/skilled worker must have the brain of a
professor and the back of an ox. Whichever, they will certainly
have marketable skills.
This is a new tune to and old song, a tune which,
if carefully and boldly orchestrated, could provide employers
pupils and society with something to sing about.
What is the title of the old song and who was the author?
Pick up the next edition of ABC+D to discover the answer...

an innovative approach
to regeneration
The huge opportunities offered by Meridian Water are being realised as a result of Enfield Councils
innovative approach to unlocking economic potential with the ultimate aim of creating 40,000 new
jobs across the borough, as well as tackling deprivation and improving prosperity.
ABC+D takes a look...
London, a global city alive with imagination, innovation
and opportunity, a key driver of the UK economy, is home
to a growing population. To accommodate these people,
more new homes and jobs will be required across London,
in well-designed new developments and neighbourhoods.
Here, north London is coming even more sharply into focus
especially in Enfield, which lies within the London Stansted
Cambridge Growth Corridor, between the M25 and A406,
well served by rail and within easy reach of four international
airports. Enfield contains a large part of the Lee Valley
Regional Park, through which runs the waters of the Lee
Navigation. Enfield is also home to some of the biggest names
in industry, such as Coca Cola, Tesco, Johnson Matthey and
Kelvin Hughes, and boasts the second largest industrial area
in the whole of London.
Cllr Doug Taylor, leader of Enfield Council said: Enfield is
already an attractive place to live, work and visit. Were pulling
out all the stops to further increase prosperity, quality of life
and opportunity for residents through exciting new projects.

Cllr Taylor added: Meridian Water will be a vital new

and revitalised employment areas all linked together

by high quality public realm.
An innovative approach to regeneration
The huge opportunities offered by Meridian Water are being
realised as a result of Enfield Councils innovative approach
to unlocking economic potential with the ultimate aim of
creating 40,000 new jobs across the borough as well as
tackling deprivation and improving prosperity.
Developed in partnership with the Centre of Research
of Economic and Social change (CRESC) this new way of
working, called New Directions, can be seen in such
pioneering projects as the Lee Valley Heat Network that will
provide new homes with competitively priced,
reliable and sustainably produced energy for heating.
Meridian Water already has its own railway station and is
well served by bus services. This high level of public transport
accessibility is complemented by attractive routes for walking
and cycling. Indeed, many people already commute from
Meridian Water to the Olympic Park and beyond on existing
cycle routes through the Lee Valley Regional Park. The private
car is also catered for in Meridian Water, car-charging points
will promote the use of electric vehicles and the
establishment of car clubs will reduce the need for

car ownership, because residents will be able to simply hire

a car when the need arises. Homes will be well insulated and
energy efficient, making use of not only solar power but also
using energy from the Lee Valley Heat Network, sourced from
a nearby energy from waste facility. Sustainable drainage and
water management, along with high quality landscaping will
address climate change requirements, as well as creating
attractive areas to enjoy.
The 80m upgrading of the West Anglia Main Line by threetracking, funded by Network Rail and the Greater London
Authority, will enable a minimum of four trains per hour
service at Meridian Water station, and will be complete by the
end of 2017. Before then, the Meridian Water railway station
itself will have been substantially improved. Land identified
for new housing development alongside the station is already
being prepared for development with the first phases of new
homes also set for completion in 2017. A new primary school
will be open by the end of 2015, and new open space at Rays
Road will be completed within the same timescale.
Meanwhile, the Causeway, the pedestrian and cycle-friendly
central spine that runs through the new development, linking
it all together, is now being designed in detail with a view to
building the early phases in 2014/15. It really is all happening.

harnessing nature
to heat homes
ABC+D takes a look at LGs new Therma V air-to-water heat pump system...
What is Therma V?
Therma V provides an economical,
environmentally friendly solution to
central heating. It works on the heat
pump principle. The outdoor unit
removes heat from the air outside
and transfers it to the indoor unit,
where it is used to generate hot
water. This hot water can then be
used for underfloor heating,
radiators and in a hot water tank.
Up to 4.5 kW of heat can be
produced for every kW of electricity
consumed. The amount of kW
of heating provided per kW of
electricity is called the Coefficient
of Performance, or COP
Indoor units
HU091 U41, HU121 U31, HU141 U31
and HU161 U31 models are MCS
CR203
Microgeneration Certification
Scheme) approved products.
Optimum efficiencies are obtained at low water temperatures,
so the system is ideally suited for underfloor heating.
The Therma V continues to operate even when the outside
temperature drops to -20C.
Four models are available, rated at 9, 12, 14, and 16 kW.
The indoor unit works in the same way as a
conventional central heating boiler,
except that it uses heat recovered
from the outdoor air instead of
gas or oil.
Therma V may be used as
an independent system.
An air-to-water heat
It can also work in conjunction

heating or a conventional boiler.

Hot water supply
Therma V is designed to provide hot water, in addition
to central heating in domestic applications.
Therma V can heat the water in the tank to 48C without
using electric heaters. There is provision to program an
automatic weekly sterilisation process at a higher
temperature, using electric heating.
It is possible to combine Therma V with solar heating,
taking advantage of free heating when it is available.
A tank with twin coils is used in this process.
The LG tank kit (Part no: PHLTA) is required when a hot water
tank is fitted. It includes a thermistor to monitor and control
the hot water temperature.

SHOW
sponsored by

The RCI Show 2014, its for you!

RCI Show director Tony Brown explains what visitors can expect at the key show
for the roofing, cladding and insulation sector

Over the last ten months since we launched the

RCI Show, we have worked tirelessly to pull
together an exhibition that the roofing, cladding
and insulation sector can be proud of. Key to this
was securing as broad a range of exhibitors as
possible to ensure the right mix of products and
materials are on show for visitors, and we feel we
have more than achieved this with over 110
exhibitors having already signed up, plus being
able to secure representation from the key
Associations in our market including the NFRC,
SPRA, LSA, LCA and the LRWA. Support from
leading construction material supplier SIG and
official show sponsor KNAUF Insulation have
also been instrumental in helping us establish
the RCI Show in the market.
In fact with just four months to go until the
October show date, we have less than 16 stands
available, so the show will be a sell out. This is a
huge credit to the industry and manufacturers
in particular who have whole-heartedly got
behind this exhibition and backed what we
believe will be a successful show for many years
to come and finally give our sector the
exhibition it deserves.
But as we all know exhibitions arent built on
exhibitors alone these days, and we have worked
hard to pull together varied and informative

content for visitors to the show. We have secured

speakers from organisations including the Zero
Carbon Hub, DECC, DCLG, CITB, Balfour Beatty
and the NIA to name just a few. Visitors will also
be able to hear from green roof expert and
regular TV contributor Dusty Gedge, roofing
consultant and RCI Technical Note author Keith
Roberts and BIM expert Gillian Smith of BIM
Store. Our full seminar programme including
topics will be finalised in the coming months.
For those who want to be more hands-on
and get up close and personal with products
and materials, SIG will be presenting a number
of its key offerings and discussing issues and
solutions in the SIG Live amphitheatre. The
NFRC will also be hosting drop in clinics where
experts will be on-hand to answer visitors
questions and queries; plus there will be a
large demo area where a number of key
companies will be showcasing the latest
installation techniques, products and
materials and questions and interaction from
visitors will be encouraged.
These are just a few of the key attractions at
the RCI Show and we are just putting the
finishing touches to a couple of attractions and
presentations that will certainly add to the
visitor experience.

Our plan is for the RCI Show to serve our

industry and deliver results for both exhibitors
and visitors for many years to come, unlike other
shows that have come and gone. But we are well
aware that as we are seeing growth returning to
construction, time is precious. With this in mind
we have worked hard to ensure that the RCI
Show will focus solely on your market and
deliver on the issues that matter to you most. We
have left no stone unturned in terms of
attracting the right people to exhibit at the show,
speak and present at the show as well as
promoting the RCI Show far and wide. This, we
are sure, will deliver results for visitors and
ensure a trip to the Ricoh Arena in October will
be a valuable experience.

Enhance and protect

Designed to enhance and protect the subtle appeal of natural stone,

Natural Paving Products (UK) has launched Pavetuf a new range
of sealants and cleaners that can be applied as soon as the stone
has been laid. Pavetuf sealants are fully breathable, meaning they
will not trap in efflorescence, which can cause unsightly markings
and structural damage to the stone. Most manufacturers recommend
waiting a minimum of three months before applying sealants to newly
laid stone in order to let this efflorescence escape, however this leaves
stone exposed to the elements and vulnerable to discolouration from
vegetation, birds, pets and spillages. Not only can Pavetuf be applied
immediately, it penetrates deep within the stone and begins to work straight away. Whats more,
this high quality protection is resistant to UV and lasts for up to eight years, unlike many other
sealants that have to be re-applied after 12 months.

CR208

A long-term, secure fix

SFS intec has expanded its portfolio
of window bracket systems with the
JB-D Light, developed to totally eliminate
dangerous installations within the
masonrys 60mm danger zone. It is a
re-occurring issue that window installers
continue to overlook the position of
fasteners when installing windows back
to masonry. If fastened within 60mm of
the window opening edge, the substrate
is instantly placed under significant strain,
as the fasteners minimum safe working
edge distance is unachievable. This makes
the substrate vulnerable to failure or
collapse, with expensive consequences.
The new JB-D Light has been specifically
designed to avoid fixing within the danger
zone by fastening deep into the masonry,
at least 60mm from the outside edge of the
wall to provide a secure and permanent fix.

Easy payment scheme

Adcock Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
has launched a new payment scheme to
help businesses replace old or inefficient
air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
ADvantage Payment Options allows
customers to spread the cost of replacement
systems for up to five years, allowing them
to upgrade to the latest and most efficient
technology including full maintenance cover,
without impacting cashflow. Recent changes
to legislation have seen the need for
businesses to reduce their C02 emissions
and replace outlawed refrigerants such as
R22. From 1 January 2015, systems using R22
became unserviceable and legislation obliges
all operators to review, replace or modify
essential equipment by the end of 2014.
In addition, alongside rising energy costs,
older systems are far more costly to run than
modern energy efficient systems which can
cut energy bills by up to half.

New interactive doors website

CR209

A brand new website from Britdoors Group offers quicker access to the
industrys largest range of UK manufactured composite and timber doors.
Additional functions will include an online ordering capability and Open
Door application. Britdoors new-look, interactive website provides the
opportunity to take an in-depth view of its product range. Many of the
products come with a seven-ten day lead time and an optional 48-hour
fast track service. All doors are delivered fully assembled and ready to
install on site. The creation of the Open Door application will provide greater
clarity on order status, including real-time updates. Highly beneficial to local
authorities and social housing providers working on large, multi-site projects
and to tight deadlines, the application will allow customers to monitor the
progress of programmed and responsive work, input measurements and
actively track door status from order receipt through to invoice.

Premium collection
New to the market comes an inspirational range of internal and
external doors from Premdor. Reflecting Premdors commitment
to excellence, the new ranges are flawlessly presented in Oak for
internal doors and Oak or Meranti for external doors. To satisfy every
requirement and aspiration, the range comprises over 15 design
options for external doors and over 18 internal design styles
with both ranges offering traditional and contemporary profiles.
The hallmark of the Premium Door Collection, however, is the
uncompromising build quality resulting in maximum stability
and strength, increased sound proofing and reduced heat loss.
Available in attractive glazed options and firedoor certified on some
models, factory prefinished ranges are available on internal doors,
which utilise a three-part polyurethane finishing system plus a highly
practical external stable door design.

New underfloor opportunities

REHAU is offering contractors a great new opportunity to
get involved in the fast growing underfloor heating market,
thanks to the launch of its new REHAU Easy Heat system
which it says is as fast and simple to install as radiators.
REHAU Easy Heat is the only underfloor heating system available
which does not require a manifold, bringing the option of underfloor
CR211
heating firmly into the mainstream end of both the domestic new build
and refurbishment sectors for the first time. It uses a conventional central
heating boiler, familiar style thermostats and simple and secure pipework connections so that it can
potentially be installed just as easily as a radiator-based system. What makes REHAU Easy Heat even
more straightforward is the fact that the new REHAU Easy Panel pipework is laid within a structural
floor system which suits the industry standard 600mm joist spacing rather than within a poured floor
screed. It is easy to install on ground and first floors and can be used with virtually any floorcovering.

CR213

Professional installers can now take advantage of the new Fernox

TF1 Compact Installers Pack. The handy pack brings together
everything required to clean, inhibit and fully protect a central
heating system where limited space or access restricts the
installation of the standard size Fernox TF1 Total Filter. Available at
all leading plumbers merchants, the new pack contains a Fernox
TF1 Compact 22mm filter, which protects traditional as well as
renewable central heating systems by removing and containing
system debris. Developed specifically for properties where space
is limited or access is restricted around the boiler, the TF1
Compact ensures all properties can benefit from filter protection.
When used in combination with chemical water treatment,
the unit can help to prolong the life of a system.

TeploTie range extended

Masonry fixings specialist, ANCON, has extended its

award-winning TeploTie range to make it suitable for
surface fixing to an in-situ masonry leaf or structural
frame. Like the original TeploTie cavity wall tie, the new
Teplo-L-Tie comprises a pultruded basalt fibre body set in
a resin matrix. This material, with its thermal conductivity
of just 0.7W/mK, minimises heat loss across an insulated
wall cavity which is an essential consideration in low
energy construction. New to the new Ancon Teplo-L-Tie,
however, is an L shaped stainless steel upstand,
mechanically and chemically bonded to one end, which
allows it to be securely tied to steel, timber, concrete or masonry using a range of standard fixings.

New range of cast iron shower drain kits

Saint-Gobain PAM UK has launched a new range of complete
cast iron shower drain kits, adding to its range of VortX drainage
products. Supplied boxed, each kit features a VortX shower drain
body, bottle trap and stainless steel grating, which is available in
a standard finish, or can be polished to order. The shower drain
bodies are manufactured in cast iron and are grey epoxy coated.
CR217
The shower gullies are available in 110mm OD vertical spigot and
60mm OD vertical and horizontal spigot options. The VortX bottle trap is removable and incorporates
a twist lock fitting of dip tube and cup. Manufactured in ABS for high chemical resistance, the bottle
trap features a fastening operation that is both simplified and robust. Each shower drain can be
connected to any pipework material with a 110 and 60mm OD. There are four grating options available
a 150 circular grating for vinyl floors, a 150 circular decorative grating for vinyl floors, a 150 square
grating for tiled floors and a 150 square decorative grating for tiled floors.

Wetroom Innovations
extends channel drain
range with Linke Line
Providing a total installation height of only
25mm plus a gulley of 52mm, Linke Line
extends the wide range of channel drains
available from Wetroom Innovations.
In some renovation projects the drain
waste pipe is forced above floor level but,
Linke Line, with minimal intrusion into the
floor cavity, negates this. The subsequent
level access floor gives a far cleaner,
minimalist aesthetic without any trip
hazards. Installation onto timber joists or
concrete is equally simple. The Purus
NOOD gulley trap will flow 36-70 litres
per minute through a 40mm waste pipe.
The tile insert grate nicely matches
adjacent tiling and a shiny steel finish is a
popular option. 500 to 1,300mm lengths
are available which can be delivered the
next day singles or quantity. The product
is manufactured in the UK.

High performance micro piles

New from HELIFIX is the versatile and
technically well proven Dixie micro-pile.
Helifix has obtained exclusive UK rights to
this system which is backed by International
Code Council certification and conforms to
AC358, the International Standard for helical
foundation underpinning systems.
Dixie micro-piles provide a fully-engineered
and cost-effective solution to the problem
of foundation settlement without the major
disruption and cost of methods that require
extensive excavations. Simple, but effective,
Helifix Dixie piles are turned into the ground
down to the load bearing strata, the bracket
is then fitted and the pile is jacked up beneath
the foundations to support the buildings
weight and prevent further settlement.

VBH adds Glazpart Link-Vent to range

CR219

VBH has added the Glazpart Link-Vent to its selection

of ventilators. Available in two sizes, 2500EQA and
5000EQA, the vent meets the requirements of Building
Regulations Approved Document F1, and delivers
similar performance to that of much larger vents,
meaning more air throughput per mm. The design
of Link-Vents internal opening flap allows it to
be positioned to reduce draughts by directing air away
from the occupants without reducing the air flow. Link-Vent is available in Screw fix or Clip fix variants.
Screw fix can be used on PVCu, aluminium and timber windows, with the rounded ends allowing it to
be rebated into timber frames if required. As well as the industry-standard white, brown, tan and black
colours, Link-Vent can also be supplied in five printed or foiled wood grain finishes and a host of colours
including Chartwell Green, Anthracite and Slate Grey and Cream.

Acrylic roof coat, easy as 1, 2, 3

IKO has launched the IKOpro Acrylic Roof Coat, a simple two-coat
liquid waterproofing solution which provides installers with a fast
lay, watertight alternative to some more traditional methods,
with no specialist equipment required. The solution is very
versatile and can, therefore, be installed directly on top of a
number of existing substrates including bituminous felt, asphalt
and concrete, removing the risk and cost of unnecessary deck
replacements, where the existing structure is sound. The system
is also suitable for application direct to existing or new plywood or OSB/3 decks. IKOpro Acrylic Roof Coat
can be applied in three quick and easy steps and dries in as little as six hours. The first coat of IKOpro
Acrylic Roof Coat is applied to the prepared roof surface by brush or roller at rate of 0.7ltr/m2. IKO GRF
100gm reinforcement fleece is then laid and rolled into the wet resin ensuring it is embedded and allowed
to cure. This is finished with a top coat of IKOpro Acrylic Roof Coat to provide a seamless, smooth finish.
The IKOpro flame-free system provides a clean, safe and sustainable waterproofing solution.

universal socket outlets

convenience over safety?
Keith Smith at BEAMA warns that universal socket-outlets could

The impact of increased

attractive concept for specifiers and installers of electrical

Keith Smith, BEAMAs deputy director installation sector,
warns: The reality, however, is very different as a great many

system is designed to ensure safety of the user. The BS 1363-1

plug pins are sleeved and the BS 1363-2 socket-outlet is
shuttered. This is to ensure that during insertion and
withdrawal of a BS 1363-1 plug from a BS 1363-2 socketoutlet, the live pins of the plug are not accessible to the user.
The shutter on the BS 1363-2 socket-outlet ensures that live
parts of the socket-outlet are not readily accessible to the
user when a plug isn't connected to the socket-outlet.
Other countries also have unique plug and socket-outlet
systems designed to allow only the correct plug to be inserted
into the corresponding socket-outlet. Countries where
unsleeved plug pins are used, such as Germany and France,
usually have socket-outlet designs incorporating a recess in
the front plate, ensuring plug pins are not accessible during
plug insertion, and withdrawal from the socket-outlet.
Universal socket-outlets, by design, dont have this safety
feature.
Universal socket-outlets allow the use of 2-pin plugs
and, in doing so, introduce a serious risk of electric shock.
A number of European countries use unsleeved 2-pin plugs,
which, when used with universal socket-outlets, leave the
pins accessible during plug insertion and withdrawal.
These pins are potentially live and, if touched, would result
in an electric shock.
Keith continues: Some universal socket-outlets do not
have shutters, leaving live parts of the socket-outlet readily
accessible. The use of un-shuttered socket-outlets in
households and similar locations is prohibited by BS 7671 (IET
Wiring Regulations 17th Edition) due to unimpeded access to
live parts within the socket-outlet. Any un-shuttered universal
socket-outlet in use should be removed from service and
replaced with BS 1363 compliant products.
Another safety issue is that some universal socket-outlet
designs will accept plugs rated at 100-120Va.c. for the
connection of items of electrical equipment having a similar
100-120Va.c. rating. Such electrical equipment, specifically

CR228
those containing motors and heating elements like hair
dryers, travel irons and kettles, will not operate safely at
230Va.c. This could cause overheating and fire. Again, BEAMA
recommends that any universal socket-outlet that will accept
a 100-120V a.c. plug should be removed from service and
replaced with BS 1363 compliant products.
Compliance and legislation
Research commissioned by the Electrical Safety Council
and the ensuing test report found that the universal socketoutlets assessed did not comply with the UK General Product
Safety Regulations 2005, the safely requirements of the UK
Plug and Socket Safety Regulations 1994 or BS 1363 the UKs
specification for 13A socket-outlets.
Schedule 2 of the UK Plugs and Sockets Regulations 1994
states that socket-outlets with which standard three-pin plugs
conforming to BS 1363 may be engaged must comply with
BS 1363.
This means that suppliers of socket-outlets ordinarily
intended for domestic use, and with which standard threepin plugs may be engaged, are legally obliged to ensure the
socket-outlets meet the requirements of BS 1363, or an
equivalent standard.
All universal socket-outlets in use should be risk assessed
Universal socket-outlets by their very nature create
worldwide dangerous compatibility by allowing plugs
of many different configurations intended to supply

appliances at different voltages, to be connected into

potentially incompatible electrical supplies. This introduces
serious potential hazards including risk of electrocution and
risk of fire.
Universal socket-outlets that do not meet all the
requirements of BS 1363 or an equivalent Standard
contravene the requirements of the UK Plug and Socket
Safety Regulations 1994, and universal socket-outlets that
allow live pins and/or live parts to be accessible do not
comply with the UK General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
BEAMA recommends that installations where universal
socket-outlets are already in use should be subjected to a risk
analysis to identify if these socket-outlets are electrically safe.
All electrically unsafe universal socket-outlets should be
removed from service and replaced with BS 1363 compliant
products.
Furthermore, BEAMA calls upon Trading Standards to take
appropriate action against the sellers of electrically unsafe
universal socket-outlets. Specifiers and installers of electrical
services should consider the legal implications of specifying
and installing universal socket-outlets in the UK.
Similarly, distributors of universal socket-outlets have a
responsibility under the General Product Safety Regulations
to act with due care. Distributors should be able to
substantiate that the universal socket-outlets they supply
are electrically safe.

Lighting the way

The Golborne Road Railway Bridge is an iconic Victorian

iron bridge in Londons Kensington and Chelsea. Recently,
its illumination has been upgraded using Roblon fibre optics
and lighting fittings supplied by Light Projects. Designed and
specified by Urban Eye, specialist in using light and surface
finishes to transform urban areas, a mix of decorative and
task lighting has been installed to provide a safe, well-lit road
and walkways. Exterior mounted Roblon LED fibre optics with
BeeSpot end points are used together with a blue linear LED
system which highlights the graceful sweeping curve of the
trusses. The BeeSpots are small, subtle and elegant IP68-rated surface-mounted fibre optic
spotlights. They are installed throughout the structure, uplighting individual ironwork girders
with narrow beam angles.

Integral LED spotlight wins Which? Best Buy

CR232

A British LED brand that has set its reputation on quality has earned
top spot in the UKs largest survey of spotlights. An Integral LED
GU10 spotlight has beaten all competitors in a Which? survey,
after being subjected to the most comprehensive test regime
of its kind. A range of LED spotlights were surveyed for reliability
and performance across criteria that measured durability and
efficiency over many months. The aim of the trial was also to
validate manufacturer claims on beam angle, intensity, light quality,
light output and power consumption. Results from 17 LED spotlights from leading manufactures saw
Integral LEDs GU10 (5.3W, 50W equivalent) rise to the top of the chart with the most accurate
on pack product specification and with five stars for both efficiency and durability. The GU10 range
is manufactured from the latest LED technology and components to ensure superior light output
and to offer excellent energy savings of up to 85% when compared to halogen equivalent products.

Fire-rated for tiny spaces

The new H4 FF luminaire from Collingwood
Lighting is the UK's first tiltable and
dimmable LED downlighter to be fire-rated,
moisture-resistant and small enough to fit
a recess of only 56mm. It has an IP65 rating
and is fully Part L compliant for 90 minutes'
fire resistance, sound attenuation and
airtightness. The lamps, which tilt up to
20 to either side at the touch of a finger,
come in a choice of beam angles (38 or 60)
and colours (neutral white or warm white).
Because the luminaire has a low profile,
it fits easily into shallow ceiling voids,
making it particularly suitable for challenging
domestic and hospitality environments,
including bathrooms and wetrooms.

Snap fit panels provide versatility

An installation of Goodlight Snap Fit retrofit LED panels has not only transformed
lighting levels but also proved its versatility within different ceiling systems for
Winterbotham Darby. As part of a recent upgrading of offices within the Winterbotham
Darby headquarters in Redhill, LED Eco Lights was commissioned to provide reliable
retrofit lighting utilising products from its award-winning Goodlight range. A major
element of the refurbishment project involved the removal of a wall between two offices
to create a single, larger working area. This, in turn, necessitated an upgrading of the
existing lighting system to provide consistent illumination throughout the entire office
space. A series of Goodlight 40W Snap Fit retrofit LED panels was specified to replace
existing 56W lamps. In contrast to conventional drop in versions, the Goodlight panels
are securely installed by pushing up into bespoke fixings.

calling time on traditional flooring

Architects, contractors and interior designers can achieve greater design freedom
by considering high performance epoxy and polyurethane resin flooring systems
over traditional sheet vinyl, lino, tile and timber flooring solutions.
Mark Bushell, national sales manager for flooring at Sika, explains how.

The concept
of Seamless flooring
is still relatively new
within the flooring
industry and some
struggle to believe
it is possible.
Imagine the
scope of design
possibilities that
comes with being
able to create
thousands of metres
of flooring in the colour or colours of your choice without a
single system joint, crease or welding line. From an aesthetic
perspective, resin flooring ticks all the boxes. Architects and
designers can achieve virtually any block colour they require,
or broadcast with decorative contrasting or complementary
chip flakes to create more of a speckled effect. It is even
possible, with highly skilled contractors, to create a marble
effect from a resin poured from a tin. Whats more, this type of
flooring, depending on the size of the room, can be laid in up
to half the time of a traditional system.
While high performance polyurethane resin flooring
systems, sometimes described as liquid applied vinyl,
are a new concept to many, they have actually been used
within the leisure sector for some years now
and are increasingly being specified
in the education, healthcare,
food and pharmaceutical sectors
as awareness grows of the
additional benefits they can
Savvy contractors have

resin-based systems
can generate
Mark Bushell
Sika

such as tiles, timber, sheet vinyl and lino, regular attention

must be given to the joints to identify areas that require
maintenance and cleaning. This is especially important in
environments such as hospitals and food preparation
facilities, where the highest standards of hygiene are required.
The beauty of seamless flooring is there is no grout or bonds
where water could ingress and bacterial growth develop,
eliminating the problem altogether. As an extension of this,
seamless flooring can actually be extended up into the wall
system for added ease of hygiene and impressive design
flexibility.

CR237
In terms of application, these systems lend themselves
equally well to new build and refurbishment projects.
In the latter, savvy contractors have been quick to
identify the time and cost savings resin-based systems
can generate. Firstly they can be laid over any flooring
type, so long as it is bound with no movement in the
substrate, which negates the need to pull up existing
flooring and send it to landfill. They can also be
incorporated into underfloor heating systems and built
up to meet specific comfort, acoustic design, vandalresistance and slip-resistance levels up to R10 Rating,
as required by the customer.
Secondly, as resin comes out of a tin, it is far easier to
handle from a health and safety perspective, removing the
need for installation teams to carry big heavy rolls of flooring
across site.

It is also worth noting that some resin flooring systems are

fully tested for VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions
and achieve the most stringent European Standards,
which means they wont give off the same strong odour
that you can get after laying a new carpet or other floor.
People new to the clean, seamless look of resin flooring
are always stunned to see it in action and often comment that
it is the future of flooring. Due to the growing demand in this
area there are now free CPD training programmes available,
and networks of approved flooring contractors are in place
to give customers added peace of mind of the quality of
the finished effects.
While we all have a tendency to stick to the tried and trusted
systems we are most familiar with you may find it pays,
from an aesthetic, practical and long-term view, to consider
a resin product for your next flooring project.

Colourful acoustics in action

Noise in swimming pools and sports and leisure centres can often result
in unpleasant echoes because it is reflected off hard surfaces and the
water and exaggerated by the natural exuberance of the participants.
In the new Eura sports complex in Western Finland, architect Heino &
Niirainen has solved this problem and created pleasant acoustics by the
extensive use of Troldtekt ultrafine panels on the ceilings and the walls.
The most dramatic is in the large swimming pool which not only has
acoustic panels between the ceiling ribs but also links a multi-coloured
wall of Troldekt panels on one side with a floor-to-ceiling glazed view on
the other. The coloured acoustic panel theme is continued in the entrance hall which is dramatically
coloured in red and in the dining area where blue dominates. Made from 100% natural wood fibres,
Troldtekt panels are suitable for use in wet rooms and areas such as this due to their durability and
ability to absorb and give off moisture.

impermeable and fire retardant, designers
are finding ways of using cork in fresh and
novel applications within interior projects.

Low maintenance internal cladding

Marbrex wall and ceiling panels form a simple and effective
internal cladding system which has been developed as a
more cost-effective, practical and low maintenance
alternative to tiling. The panels are available in
contemporary and traditional finishes that emulate
the appearance of stone, marble, granite and wood.
The construction of the panels means that they can also
help to insulate a room, therefore reducing condensation;
they are waterproof, hygienic and easy to clean, not
harbouring mould or germs. Marbrex is quick and easy to
install as the panels do not require the time consuming
task of grouting. It can be fixed to plaster, brickwork,
battening or directly on top of existing tiles.

Heradesign transforms legal offices

CR250

Property law specialist, JB Leitch, has recently rebranded

an open plan, flexible office space which reflected the mature
and serious aspirations of the legal practice. The new interior
expresses the companys modern and confident approach,
with its warm, contemporary design. Neil Dawson of Snook
Architects, specified Heradesign for the project and explains
why: We wanted an alternative to the traditional suspended ceiling. Heradesign ceilings from Knauf
AMF Ceilings are clever because, although a panelled system, the concealed grid disguises the fact
that it is suspended (particularly with the nice chamfer detail on the edge of each panel). Moreover,
their natural colour and size softens the feel of the space. 800m Heradesign ceilings feature in the
main reception, meeting rooms, open plan areas and the training, reading and social spaces.

By 2030, it is estimated that 70% of the worlds population will

Inevitably, this will mean an increase in the amount of fuel
and energy needed by the population. However, we are
currently using natural resources one and a half times faster
than the world can replenish them.
As a result, environmental legislation is increasing to prevent
resource scarcity and high levels of pollution. In the EU,
targets have been set for a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions versus 1990 levels, which are being implemented
through the Europe 2020 strategy. Furthermore, voluntary
green building certifications such as LEED and BREEAM are
helping to increase the acceptance, use and development
of new technologies designed to help meet these new
environmental standards.
Global markets
These legislative changes are manifesting themselves in
different ways across the world. In Europe, where 50 to 60%
of houses in use today were built before 1970, there is
a requirement to improve the energy consumption of
existing housing stock. Therefore, the
process of retrofitting buildings to
upgrade and improve their resource
efficiency is becoming
increasingly important.

In the future, coatings

impurities from the air
and keep the indoor air
quality at a high level may
come onto the market...
Andrew Burgess
AkzoNobel

The situation is quite different

in the developing world,
however. For example, it is

estimated that by 2030, 50% of new global construction will

be in China. The implementation of green building standards
in the country will therefore be crucial to Chinas ability to
meet its own carbon and energy reduction targets. The recent
announcement that China is set to adopt Britains green
construction standards should help achieve this objective,
at the same time as boosting UK business by around 200m
through increased work for UK supply chain companies.

CR254
There is also an urgent need to develop low cost housing in
emerging economies, such as China, which is driving the use
of new types of buildings, including modular homes. This new
and highly efficient process involves sections of a house being
manufactured in a factory, before being assembled on site.
Functional paints
As developers grapple with these trends and techniques,
they are increasingly looking to suppliers to provide
products that will further enhance a buildings sustainabilitity
credentials. While many may think this comes down to
the building fabrics, paints and coatings can also perform
a functional role within a building, and there are an increasing
number of products available that do this.
In the darker, colder parts of the world, buildings are being
designed to maximise natural light in a bid to reduce energy
bills. To enhance this trend, there are now specialised paint
products on the market, which reflect more light than
conventional coating systems, which can lead to a reduced
need for artificial lighting and potential energy savings of
up to 22%.
Similarly, solar reflective coatings are also being developed
for use in warmer climates. These exterior paints deflect the
infrared part of the solar spectrum so that a building does
not heat up as much, thus reducing air conditioning costs.

Recently, the industry has also seen an increased interest in

indoor air quality. Currently, paint manufacturers are focused
on reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in their
coatings. However, in the future, coatings that could actively
extract impurities from the air and keep the indoor air quality
at a high level may come onto the market. Looking even further
forward, it might even possible to produce exterior paints that
contribute to the removal of pollutants from street level. If this
was the case, buildings could actually be used to help clean up
the environment.
Interaction
Strides are also being made in how we relate to the spaces
around us. People are beginning to interact with their homes
in new ways, which could have a dramatic impact on the
way buildings are designed. We are already reaching a stage
where people are able to control aspects of their homes
functionality, such as heating, through smart phones and tablets.
As this evolves, we may see a future where people interact with
their homes through gestures rather than devices, with the walls
becoming responsive to the hand movements of the occupant.
It is clear that major changes are occurring within the building
sector and, whether you are a cement provider, a renewable
energy supplier, a glazing company, or a paints and coatings
company, there are great opportunities to play a key role within
this transformation.

Engineering excellence
extends to ventilation

The 5.4m Hethel Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering

Centre in Norfolk is using natural ventilation designed and
supplied by independent manufacturer Gilberts of Blackpool
to help air the low carbon building containing 16 workshops
with adjoining first floor office space. The scale and design of
the building required exacting engineering from Gilberts:
the five penthouse roof terminals are up to 20m long, and the
use of interlocking cladding for the walls required that the
interlocking detail is mimicked in the wall ventilation louvres.
Gilberts natural ventilation strategy, in line with that required by project consultant NPS, uses a
combination of passive stack and cross flow ventilation on the two floors of the building. Boost fans
and acoustic splitters ensure air quality without noise transfer is maintained throughout the building.

is a responsibility for the industry to monitor and control
energy usage but warns that prevaricating until the
perfect solution is developed is not helping to push things
forward. It is time to focus on what we can do to
decarbonise the UK building stock to support energy and
emission target reductions by using the best available
technologies today and not waiting for a magic box
solution tomorrow. He says there is no one, single method to achieve energy efficiencies and
advocates using a mix of existing renewables and traditional technologies tied in with smart control
systems as the practical way forward to a greener future. He urges the industry to act now considering
multiple solutions and not one-size-fits-all.

Going underground in Doha

Casella has provided a number of its BOUNDARY Guardian environmental
monitoring units for the construction of the new Qatar underground metro
system. Like many major cities, Doha has a number of local guidelines for
noise and dust emissions from construction works, especially with regards
to more sensitive areas around the site. Combine this with local challenges,
like sand blown in from the desert during the summer months and changes
in air quality from high volumes of city traffic, the contractors needed a
reliable, effective and fast system to alert them to breaches to local noise
and dust regulations. The BOUNDARY Guardian was selected as a suitable,
system-engineered solution to monitor and alert site managers to excessive
noise and dust levels. The BOUNDARY Guardian can be specified to include
the measurement of noise, dust and also wind speed and direction or any
combination of these parameters. It is easily installed as it just needs a power
source to plug into and users simply login online to monitor site conditions.

SCHCK VERIFIABLE PERFORMANCE FITS NICELY WITH BOUYGUES

Two large affordable housing developments in Wembley and Harrow

incorporate Schck Isokorb modules throughout to prevent any risk of thermal
bridging problems and help optimise the sustainable nature of the buildings.
The completed design and build developments are part of a scheme being
delivered throughout the borough for the Brent Private Finance Initiative (PFI)
housing project by Bouygues UK in partnership with Hyde Housing. The two
developments in question respectively offer 88 Flats and Maisonettes over four
floors; and 44 flats over nine floors.
The specific Isokorb used on the two sites is the type KS14, which is a
load-bearing, thermal insulating element for connecting cantilevered steel
components to reinforced concrete. An independent investigation into the
performance criteria concerning the effectiveness of steel balcony

connections to concrete slabs has been carried out by the Oxford Institute
for Sustainable Development, at Oxford Brookes University. The OISD found
the Isokorb type KS14 to be a superior thermal insulating element for
connecting cantilevered steel components to reinforced concrete, with other
comparable solutions failing to obtain the minimum amount of performance
required by Part L of the Building regulations(1).
Loic Menard, Project Director for
Bouygues UK, Brent Social Housing &
Regeneration PFI commented: "Schck
Isokorbs provide energy efficient thermal
breaks that comply with our design and
build sustainability requirements. The
product's functionality meets our
objectives in achieving high performance
buildings whilst reducing CO2 emissions
during production and for the end user".
The Schck Isokorb range of modules
offer exceptional thermal performance
ratings and are the only products of their
type to allow connectivity between
concrete-to-concrete, concrete-to-steel
and steel-to-steel and also provide BBA
Certification and LABC Registration.
The modules offer designers and engineers complete peace of mind, as all units
meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations. The requirement
described in BRE IP1/06 a document cited in Building Regulations Approved
Documents Part L1 and L2 and Section 6 in Scotland that the temperature factor
used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI) must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for
residential buildings, is easily met by incorporating the Isokorb.

Barcode architecture offers design potential
With more and more architects designing buildings that use natural

The name derives from the way in which, when inserted into a curtain
wall or ribbon window, the vents can resemble the vertical lines of
barcodes found on product labels the world over. The decorative
possibilities of this effect will be warmly welcomed by UK architects
searching for new ways in which to express their creative vision.

designers high priority and Grant UK recently provided a winning
solution for a new residence in Grimsby. Colin Goodwin is a property

came to building his own home, he aimed to be as green as possible.
After much research, he knew he wanted to use a company which
could supply and install a range of products and looked to Grant UK

specialists in their field but could only supply one product when a total solution was required, says Colin.
Grant could supply and design all that was needed. A large PV array was installed in the garden to provide
sufficient power to the property and also take advantage of the Government FITs incentive (Feed in Tariffs).
For the heating and hot water a Grant Aerona ASHE 21.5kW heat pump was chosen. This supplied a large
buffer tank which, in turn, fed the underfloor heating and the hot water cylinder and was all controlled by
a Grant Energy Management System.

BS 7346 Part 8 a clear path

for smoke ventilation
With the publication of the new BS 7346 Part 8 standard, the potential for confusion when navigating
the various compliance issues surrounding smoke ventilation systems design, installation,
commissioning and maintenance is almost completely overcome. Here, Will Perkins,
group managing director of smoke ventilation systems specialist, SE Controls and a key contributor
to the new standard, explores how it can help save lives and improve industry standards...

Unsurprisingly, the legislative environment governing

the smoke control and fire safety industry is complex,
far-reaching and absolutely vital to ensure that systems
not only operate faultlessly when theyre needed,
but also provide effective safety protection, allowing
people to escape a fire.
However, while Building Regulations Approved Document B,
The Machinery Directive and The Construction Product
Regulations, via the various parts of EN 12101, provide a
relatively tight regulatory framework, until the BS 7346-8
Code of Practice, no single document existed that provided
guidance for the industry from initial design, through
installation to maintenance.
The over arching benefit of this new document is
that by adhering to its guidelines designers, installers,
commissioning engineers and maintenance teams can create,
install and operate a fully compliant smoke control system.
Throughout BS 7346-8, there are some constant themes that
are present. Not only does it deal with product quality, location,
performance and operation, but also the key questions of
assessment of needs together with the certification and
verification by authorised bodies.
Interestingly, the development
of the new Code of Practice was
stimulated by a number of factors
including the need for a
consistent standard against

smoke ventilation and

has come of age
Will Perkins
SE Controls

Developing the standard

The Smoke Control Association (SCA), of which SE Controls
is a long-standing corporate member and has been present
on the British Standards committee for more than 15 years,
recognised that there was a need to raise the standards across
the industry.
A key driver in the early stages of the process was evidence
suggesting that smoke control systems in residential high-rise
developments were of variable quality, an issue created by a
number of factors. For example, although there are several
inter-related product standards governing individual
components within smoke control solutions, nothing existed
that encompassed the entire system.

Automatic roof smoke vents and actuators

In addition, while the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety)

Order 2005 (RRO) allows systems to be inspected, verified
for performance and even condemned by the fire service,
where necessary, this can only be undertaken after the
building is complete and is occupied.
Clearly, there were gaps that required bridging, particularly
in managing the quality and consistency of the design and
installation process. Following an initiative and proposal
made by SE Controls to the SCA, the association began
the process of creating an installer certification procedure.
The resulting FIRAS accreditation scheme was created
to ensure systems were consistently and safely installed,
commissioned and maintained in accordance with the clear
design criteria that are required to be set out on each project.
The development of the FIRAS accreditation scheme
brought into sharp focus the urgent need for a common
standard against which assessments could be made. This led
to the formation of the British Standards 7346-8 working
group, comprising key industry stakeholders, including
manufacturers, regulators and the Fire and Rescue Service.
In practice
Some would say the standard is perhaps long overdue and,
for some time, there has been a need to harmonise standards
across the industry and ensure the systems perform
effectively. In reality, as has already been explored, there is a
diverse range of regulations and conventions in the UK and
Europe that already ensure that the key elements of smoke
ventilation systems perform to the highest standards.
By having a robust installer accreditation scheme,
which is now in place, and BS 7346-8 as the recognised

system implementation standard, there is now no justification

for inferior quality installations. Ignorance cannot be an
excuse.
BS 7346-8 builds on all of the regulations, procedures and
processes that exist and combines them into a unified code
of practice that is designed to make the entire procedure of
designing, installing and maintaining a compliant smoke
control system a much more straightforward task.
The code exists to ensure compliance and high standards,
as well as making things simpler for all those involved.
For example, the first chart within the standard is a block
process diagram that not only covers the full path from
identifying the system requirements to the details of
frequency of maintenance, but also includes the key
considerations that need to be observed throughout
the entire process.
The scope and detail it contains is comprehensive and every
aspect of the system design is covered along with key system
design considerations dedicated to particular smoke
ventilation products, such as SHEVs, smoke barriers and
smoke shaft systems.
This same level of detail is carried through the entire
document, covering core elements, such as cable selection
and routing, while equally importantly providing templates
for mandatory documents, such as commissioning,
acceptance and inspection and servicing certificates.
In operation
Ultimately, the new standard deals with two essential
elements of smoke ventilation and control systems: cause and
effect and responsibility, both of which are key principles of
Continued on page 44...

for the stage. This has the effect of verifying performance,

standard of design, installation and maintenance at each
phase and acts as a quality or due diligence procedure as
an integral system feature.
Although various contractual arrangements are possible,
the overall responsibility for checking that the performance
of the system matches the design requirements should be
assumed by one organisation that is competent. In this
instance, competence can be typically demonstrated through
accreditation under a third party scheme, such as FIRAS.
In conclusion
There are no down sides to BS 7346-8, only positives.
Within this single document that is barely 50 pages long,
the entire smoke ventilation and control systems industry has
come of age in terms of its integrity, performance, quality and
compliance. Admittedly, the industry already had excellent
standards, but BS 7346-8 has made it clear what needs to be
achieved, how it can be done and what procedures have to
be observed, without fail.
Overall, perhaps its most significant contribution is that it
will help save even more lives, as the quality of smoke
ventilation design will be even more consistent and will
promote even higher standards throughout the industry,
which is essential to maintain and enhance the
professionalism that the SCA, SE Controls and other similar
organisations have worked so tirelessly to achieve.

effective system design, operation and safety, but for differing

reasons.
System cause and effect schedules define the system
architecture and operation. For a specific input or event
there will be a corresponding response from the
system, whether it is a manually controlled test process or
an automatic trigger in the event of a fire. In both cases,
the system must perform correctly and respond appropriately
to maintain safety.
Consulting engineers, architects, design teams and installers
will already be familiar with the principles of cause and effect,
but BS 7346-8 makes it a discrete but inherent part of the
overall system process to ensure failsafe operation and system
integrity.
With complex life safety critical systems, such as smoke
ventilation and smoke control, responsibility is an integral
feature that must be observed, implemented and enforced.
Through the standard, the responsibility and acceptance of
responsibility for key procedures, phases and elements of
the system are built-in to ensure compliance and adherence
to the relevant regulations. It demands that performance
documentation for every phase of the work should be fully
recorded by the person or organisation taking responsibility

Fire solutions by appointment

The design and installation skills of award-winning fire safety system

contractors Fire Design Solutions (FDS) have seen it appointed to
a residential development in Greenwich, London. Working alongside
contractor Willmott Dixon, FDS will work on a number of apartment
blocks in the Greenwich Millennium Village community. The FDS
team has been tasked with the design, supply and installation of
mechanical smoke venting and corridor environmental systems
for five of the residential blocks, three of which are ten storeys high.
Gerard Sheridan, chairman at FDS, said: Having worked with
Willmott Dixon in the past, were delighted to have been appointed to
their latest project. Varying between three and ten storeys high, each of the buildings requires different
considerations, but our in-depth knowledge of the design and installation of smoke venting and corridor
environmental systems enables us to provide the most appropriate solution for each building.

NFRC spearheads safety campaign

The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) the UKs
largest roofing trade association has spearheaded a safety campaign to
alert roofing contractors, architects and specifiers to the potential dangers
of torch-on membranes and the fact that contractors may not be insured to
do the work. After having identified a number of common flat roofing trouble
spots where flat roofs abut pitched roofs, where there are flammable
materials and in the gaps between the plywood decking sheets
a Responsible Specification Checklist has been produced that is aimed
primarily at contractors and specifiers for use on site. Ray Horwood CBE,
chief executive of NFRC explains: When specifying bituminous membranes
for certain flat roofs, architects, specifiers and contractors need to be aware
of the hazards. In the right situation, it is perfectly safe to use torch-on membranes,
providing the torch does not come into direct contact with any combustible materials.

A Gem of an installation
Warrior doors were commissioned to
design, manufacture and install a new
high security doorset by Tulja jewellers to
replace the existing entrance. The client
specifically wanted an interlocking system
featuring two sliding doors which would
be both convenient to use and provide
a higher level of security and protection
for the premises and staff. Warrior doors
chose FAACs A140 sliding door operator
due to its high performance capability.
The doors are heavy because they
are manufactured in stainless steel with
African cedar hardwood inserts and 19mm
ballistic resistant glass plus there was an
additional requirement to make the
opening wider and higher than standard.

Aicos heat alarm recommended by Plumis

Aicos Ei164RC mains powered heat alarm has been recommended
by British manufacturer Plumis for use with its award-winning
Automist home fire safety system. Automist is a more convenient
alternative to traditional sprinkler systems which uses watermist
technology to put out fires, using just 5% of the water consumed
by a traditional sprinkler system. Once triggered, a small pump drives
mains water through the nozzle unit, quickly filling the room with a
dense fog. The system can be installed in a number of unobtrusive
configurations, including under a tap, on a work surface, or wall
mounted. An Aico heat alarm triggers the Automist system via
a Relay Module. A heat alarm is suitable for use in this type of
application as it is only triggered by high temperatures (58C),
rather than smoke, which means that Automist will not be
accidentally triggered.

Design-concious and discreet

Searching for an active fire protection option that will safeguard
escape routes and aid evacuation, while also offering design flexibility
and meeting Building Regulations? Then look no further than
Automist from Sussex-based specialists, Quenchfire. Automist is
a smart alternative to traditional sprinkler systems, because it is
more cost-effective, easier and quicker to install and is suitable for
open plan spaces, new builds, refurbishments or loft conversions.
Extensively tested and proven to be effective by BRE Global,
it is an extremely low maintenance option, requiring only annual
commissioning to monitor the output pressure. The system activates
when fire temperatures are detected, using a fine water mist to lower
the temperature and the accumulation of toxic gases, creating
conditions that allow occupants to vacate the building safely.

AVOIDING PART L RISKS

Following implementation of the new Building Regulations Part L this April, concerns are growing that greater air-tightness in new housing could
increase carbon monoxide poisoning risks, justifying more stringent requirements for CO alarms.
The main difficulty with CO is that the dangers are often far from obvious and it comes from a surprisingly wide variety of sources often
unpredictable. The latest Part L requires the sealing up of buildings for energy conservation, further reducing scope for air intake and movement
naturally around a home, potentially increasing CO risks further.
This issue is already recognised by the governments Green Deal initiative for upgrading the energy performance of existing properties. Here,
installers should assess the impact of their work on air-tightness and any associated increased risks of CO poisoning. If there is any increase, a CO
alarm must be installed. And responsible housing providers acknowledge the problem as well. For example, each of the 28 PassivHaus-certified
houses in a recent project by Gentoo are fitted with Kidde CO alarms, despite the absence of fuel-burning appliances within homes.
Kiddes 10LLCO is the only range of 10-year guaranteed alarms with CO sensors the key component actually tested throughout a 10-year period or longer. Kidde also manufactures its own
sensors, allowing tighter quality controls to be applied. The 10LLCO range is specially designed for quick and simple installation by anyone. It offers low cost of ownership, with Best Value over
the 10-year life, and is ideal for social and private landlords.
Both models are small in size with a slim profile and can be wall-mounted or used freestanding. They are simply activated by the slide-on back plate, so preserving battery freshness until
needed, and a tamper resisting self-locking installation system avoids alarm theft. One model - 10LLDCO has a digital display to provide early warning of intermittent and low levels of carbon
monoxide. A Peak Level button can also help identify CO problems occurring when the property is not occupied.

focus on education

laying the foundations

for the class of 2020
Chris Duckworth, commercial director of SipBuild UK, explores how off-site construction is
increasing in popularity as local authorities square up to one of the biggest challenges to face the
education sector in generations...

By 2020, the Department of Education warns that if no action

is taken to increase primary school places, the system will
reach breaking point.

Despite suggestions to break class size limits and put teachers

on shifts, the only true solution is for local authorities to invest
in developing their existing stock.

Based on current population projections, in just six years the

UK will see an increase of 700,000 primary school pupils being
forced into an already overstretched state education system.

From 2010 to 2013 the contract value for primary schools

increased by 91%. Fuelled by the political agenda and
necessity, it is believed a sizable chunk of these budgets
invested in off-site construction a trend which is predicted
by the industry to continue.

Despite this concern being high on the political agenda,

the fact remains few local authorities are in a financial
position to rebuild their existing school stock in preparation
for this increase.
Instead, many have taken the decision to assess the potential
for expanding existing sites using modern building methods,
like off-site construction to develop land which previously
wouldnt have been possible, let alone cost-effective.
Regardless of their personal view on the Government
initiatives success, when Michael Gove decided to scrap
Building Schools for the Future (BSF) in 2010, many people
were concerned about the future of state funded secondary
schools if they didnt have financial support to
develop school stock.

Based on current
population projections,
in just six years the UK will
see an increase of 700,000
primary school pupils...
Chris Duckworth
SipBuild UK

But few realised it would be the

primary sector, with its funding in
the form of the Primary Capital
Programme (PCP) intact, that
would be the one struggling
to keep up.

And its easy to understand why off-site, or modular

construction, is such an attractive option for local authorities.
If a school commits to a traditional build project, they could
be facing months of work taking place on site which can
cause a huge amount of disruption to both the school and
its surrounding area, including residents and traffic flow.

An alternative is to plan work around the school term so the

site is only live during the holidays, but while this reduces
disruption to the school it doesnt ease any of the other
external issues and it increases the projects duration
considerably.
In some cases planning permission has even been refused
because a project was deemed to be too disruptive to the
local community.
In comparison, off-site methods, like structurally insulated
panels (SIPs), can be completed in a matter of weeks.
Almost all of the preparatory work is undertaken off site,
during term time and with little disruption to teachers, pupils
and the surrounding area satisfying planning permission
requirements and speeding up project completion.
A further challenge faced by local authorities, which modern
construction methods provide a solution to, is accessibility,
making land which isnt suitable for traditional build methods
available to increase classroom capacity.
Selecting a plot of land for development isnt just about
picking where a building can fit, its also about assessing
where realistically a build team can work.
If you think about the access required for traditional
construction you need to account for multiple contractors
being on site at any one time often with industrial vehicles
and machinery. Sometimes all the crews and equipment are
needed on site at the same time, so there has to be sufficient
space to ensure they can all work together safely.
With offsite construction the amount of operating space is
significantly reduced, installation crews are smaller in size,
which means the process is far more efficient and a minimum
number of industrial vehicles are needed to support installation.

Furthermore, off-site methods such as SIPs are lighter than

a standard masonry equivalent which means different
foundations can be put into place like pad-and-pile providing
a faster build and less concrete deliveries to site.

CR283

Off-site construction enables local authorities to use

every square foot of the land available for development.
Its more efficient both in terms of time, budget and its
environmental impact.
It also offers flexibility that traditional methods cant compete
with and local authorities will need to harness if they are to
meet the challenge of providing an additional 700,000
primary school places in the next six years.

Enhancing safety in the education sector

The Powermatic controlled, concealed door closer from

Samuel Heath is particularly suited to the education sector.
While its fire performance credentials, maintenance-free service
and enhanced aesthetics are undoubtedly attractive, anecdotal
evidence suggests that it is the door closers total concealment
and the many health and safety benefits that this brings, that
are making Powermatic so popular for use in schools, colleges
and university facilities. Available in standard and free swing
models, Powermatic door closers reduce risk in two key areas
vandalism and self-harm. Being totally invisible when the door is closed, Powermatic is less likely to be
vandalised, thereby reducing maintenance costs and, more importantly, reducing the risk of a fire door
being rendered ineffective by a damaged door closer. This concealment, and the fact that the closer
can be mounted at a low position in the door, also helps to reduce the opportunity for self-harm.

had input into the imaginative design of their new
school which features classrooms and group
rooms clustered around shared, central activity
hubs. The ground floor classrooms enjoy direct
access to the outdoor areas, while large windows
throughout the building provide bright, well-lit spaces. The Passivhaus design was chosen for the
school because it creates exceptional indoor comfort and meets the local authoritys requirement
to reduce the buildings energy consumption.

Sanicubic for London university

Using a combination of 12 Sanicubic Pro
macerating pumps for high performance in
areas where continuity of service is critical,
plus a number of Sanispeed pumps and
Sanibest macerating units, The City of London
University has converted a semi-basement
into additional science laboratories,
accommodation and washroom facilities.
Saniflo pumping stations were specified for
all the waste discharge. The quiet macerating
pumps service an area of over 0.5 miles.
According to Colin Fiddler of Aveat Heating in
Essex, the specification of Saniflo macerators
and pumps saved the university time and
money by avoiding the need to install new
drainage pipes. The whole job is on course
to be finished for the next intake of students
who will benefit from new facilities to aid
their studies.

CR289

When a rise in the local population forced Caldmore

Community Primary School to double its intake of
pupils, architects at Walsall Council were faced with
the challenge of extending the building in the
already limited school grounds. Kingspan OPTIM-R
formed a key part of their solution, ensuring a
smooth transition from the first storey classrooms
to an outdoor play deck, without compromising
either space or thermal performance in the rooms
below. Unlike conventional insulation products, Kingspan Insulations OPTIM-R vacuum insulation
panels feature a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope.
This allows them to deliver optimum levels of thermal performance from a minimal product thickness,
with a thermal conductivity as low as 0.007W/mK.

Efficient flushing
Robert Pearson supplies a range of water
saving, No-Touch sensor operated WC
Flushvalves to the education sector.
The efficient, electronic flushvalve has
an adjustable open period so you can
optimise the amount of water used per
flush. It also means that, especially when
retro-fitted to old larger cisterns, you do
not need to flush all the water from the
cistern (suitable for flushing trough
applications), meaning that the cistern
water re-fill time is quicker. The No-Touch
sensor operation is both hygienic and easy
to operate, with the added bonus of being
vandal resistant as there are no handles
or mechanical linkages to break.

Curved daylighting for students

The Kalwall diffused daylighting system from Structura UK
has been specified for a new teaching building at Harper Adams
University. One of the projects stunning features is the way in
which Kalwall has been used to allow and control the interior
daylight light levels and still achieve minimal solar heat gain.
This was achieved by using daylight modelling to predict precisely
the illumination levels across the floors. The result is that the
privacy of the students is preserved while they benefit from very
attractive leisure and social areas on two levels. Widely used for
cladding and rooflights, the highly insulating Kalwall system
transmits Museum-Quality Daylighting. Here, the translucent
panels have been designed to follow the curve of the laminated
timber structure. This floods the interior with natural diffused
daylight while eliminating glare and shadows.

STATE-OF-THE-ART UNIVERSITY NEW BUILD IS SAFE AND SECURE THANKS TO SCHLTER

An array of innovative Schlter-Systems products have been used in the

building of a state-of-the-art academic facility at Bath Spa University.
Playing an essential role in the visually stunning facility at the Universitys
Newton Park campus, Schlters maintenance free movement joints SchlterDILEX-AKWS and Schlter-DILEX-BWB were specified for the build, as well as its
distinctive orange waterproofing membrane, Schlter-DITRA.
The world-class development, built by contractors Skanska, will provide
students with brand new teaching facilities; technology enabled study and social
learning spaces, and a new digital space which boasts the best resources for
teaching digital media-related courses in the south-west. The development,
which is part of a wider 70m investment in the Universitys future, was designed
in consultation with English Heritage and Natural England and meets the highest
environmental standards.
Schlters products were installed throughout the new academic building

named Commons, both in the atrium and in the facilitys washrooms. SchlterDILEX offers the ultimate in flooring protection and is ideal for use with floors
that are exposed to pedestrian traffic as the stainless steel movement joints
ensure that tiles wont bulge, dent or crack. Whilst Schlter-DITRA acts as a
universal substrate for tile coverings offering a proven solution for uncoupling
and bonded waterproofing. It remains unique to the market due to its geometry
which allows for the absorption of lateral movement in each direction.
The work to install Schlters products, carried out over a period of four
months, was undertaken by subcontractor South West Decorating Services (SWDS).
Louis Stafford, Director of SWDS, commented, Schlter-Systems offers high
quality products that are easy to get hold of, easy to use and come with ondemand technical support, should you need it. I would definitely recommend the
manufacturer to other installers and regularly recommend the use of SchlterDITRA when projects involve tiling large areas.
Carl Stokes, Head of Marketing
and Customer Service at SchlterSystems, said, We are very proud
to have been chosen to provide
long-lasting flooring protection to
this exciting new building. The
Universitys investment is bound
to put it in the spotlight and Im
glad that Schlters products have
helped play apart in making it
secure and safe, to allow
hundreds of students to fully
enjoy its new facilities.

With over 10,000 products in its range, Schlter-Systems have an essential role to play in every professional tiling

ALL QUIET AT ST. JOSEPHS CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

In 1851, Frederick Faber (a hymn writer and

theologian who converted from Anglicanism to
the Catholic priesthood), founded a religious
charity to educate and help local poor children
providing an Infant School, Boys and Girls Day
Schools and Night Schools for those boys and
girls who, being employed in selling fruit,
sweeping crossings and similar occupations,
cannot attend school in the daytime (Source:
Catholic Directory 1856). Located within
Londons Seven Dials Conservation Area, part of
the original extensive building complex
eventually become St. Josephs Catholic Primary
School.
Several of the other original buildings now
provide residential accommodation and the

building located to the south side of St. Josephs,

which overlooks classrooms and the schools
playground, is scheduled for demolition to make
way for additional, much needed social and
private flats. The excessive noise generated from
building works cannot be adequately contained
by traditional sash windows and without some
additional insulation there would be a damaging
effect on classroom concentration. The World
Health Organisations guideline for reasonable
noise levels in classrooms is 35-40dB and
consultant EC Harris, acting for the London
Borough of Camden, recommended the
installation of acoustic secondary glazing.
Selectaglaze, the UKs leading designer of
secondary glazing systems, was approached to
develop designs that would provide the
necessary noise reductions but also allow full
access to the external sash windows, some with
high level hopper lights, both for ventilation and
maintenance. The Company has a wide range of
laboratory tested products that will reduce noise
levels by 40-45dB and has considerable
experience of working within period buildings.
The solution was a slim balanced vertical
sliding unit to match the sash windows and a high
level horizontal sliding unit for the hopper lights.
Ring pulls were applied to the upper sliding

panels to allow them to be operated by the same

pole that opens the hoppers and so ensure
access to high level ventilation. Toughened safety
glass was recommended throughout to reduce
risk to pupils and staff.
Selectaglaze treated a total of 37 windows
across all four floors of the school, providing a
total of 69 frames, each of which was purpose
made with high performance seals that not only
improve the acoustic insulation but also help
reduce the passage of dust and dirt, which is a
feature of all building sites. The bespoke frames
were fully fabricated off-site allowing rapid
installation during a holiday period, thus
minimising disruption for the school.

Improved sight for former eye hospital

A renowned eye hospital celebrating its bicentenary this year has been given
expert help to retain its heritage by window specialist Ventrolla. Manchester
Royal Eye Hospital has a new modern building now, but its former hospital
building, a Victorian Grade II listed faade, remains on a prominent site
in Oxford Road. Citylabs, a new biomedical centre of excellence is being
developed there, using both the frontage of the former Royal Eye Hospital
building and a 94,000ft2 building at the rear. For this latest chapter in the
buildings history a major operation was required to provide quality
replacement windows in keeping
CR292
with its heritage. The 320,000
project entrusted to Ventrolla
involved 130 windows in total
and was completed in April 2014.
30% of the windows were
renovated and 70% fitted with
double-glazed replacements,
with Ventrollas patented Sash
Removal System (SRS) also
installed.

rather than alienate
them, through a collection of ceramics, brassware and showers that are
well-designed, elegant and functional. The range incorporates products
that allow the specifier to create fully Part M compliant ensuites,
demonstrating how wheelchair accessible bathrooms can be as
contemporary and beautiful as conventional bathrooms. This new solution
has been developed to meet the needs of the less abled, in conjunction
with occupational therapists, while maintaining the design integrity

protection for all

The latest wall coatings and impact protection systems can help infection prevention and control,
improve access and enhance interior design of healthcare facilities, says Kate Waterston,
UK sales manager of Construction Specialties...
It is estimated that 300,000 patients a year in England acquire
infections as a result of visiting healthcare facilities. This costs
the NHS up to 1bn a year, puts extra pressure on resources
and risks patient safety and comfort. Along with ever-more
stringent regulations aimed at improving infection control,
the challenge is compounded by constraints on budgets
and a lack of staff resources, particularly in the public sector.
Durability is an important consideration, particularly in high
traffic areas as cracks, dents and tears, particularly in wall
finishes and doors, can harbour dirt and bacteria and may
also lead to increased maintenance and cleaning costs.
Additionally, healthcare facilities, by their very nature,
must provide for people with a wide range of ambulatory
and usage skills, from recovering patients to the elderly
and visitors or patients with ongoing mobility and visual
impairment issues.
The specification and selection of the most appropriate
materials for walls, ceilings, floors and doors to meet these
wide-ranging criteria is therefore critical.
A raft of guidance is available to architects, contractors
and specifiers, including the Department of Healths Health
Building Notes, published in 2013. In terms of access, the 2013
revision to Approved Document M Access to and use of
buildings, has shifted emphasis from provision for disabled
building users to inclusive design. The main objective is to
enable everyone to travel around the building without
discomfort or risk of personal injury.
All the guidance points to the need for protection measures
to be designed-in at the outset of planning and design.
Furthermore, specifying the correct
internal surface materials at the outset
will mean cleaning regimes can be
planned and agreed.

and feet and chair backs and beds impacting walls.

Those selecting the right kind of impact protection should
consider a number of factors, including the most appropriate
materials, the correct positioning for crashrails and handrails
and the best height for corner guards.
The most economical option for wall coatings is
conventional emulsion paint. However, there are a number
of wall/ceiling coatings available that are more durable and
are unaffected by intensive cleaning. Some coatings also
include bactericides and fungicides in every layer, so even the
most rigorous cleaning regimes do not diminish their ability
to inhibit microbial growth. Some also have fibreglass
reinforcement for increased abrasion and impact resistance.
Where durability is of particular concern, it is worth
considering an impact-resistant wall sheet or panel protection
system which also supports IPC and is easy to clean.
Both products can be used on flat surfaces and come in
a wide range of colours. Sheet products can also be formed
or moulded and are therefore suitable for column casing
or reception desk facing, for example.
Doors and door frames are some of the most vulnerable
items. Damaged doorsets not only compromise hygiene
and interior aesthetics but also fire safety. The same impact
resistant sheet materials used for wall protection can be fitted
to doors to create full or half height protection, kick plates
and push plates, maintaining the doors integrity and
increasing their working life.

DLW Linoleums Marmorette prescribed

for hospital refurbishment

When Armitage Associates was asked to mastermind the 16 million

refurbishment of the landmark five-storey Glasgow Royal Infirmary
University Tower, the architects preferred to specify linoleum
wherever possible.
Jeremy Armitage, partner in the Glasgow-based architectural and
interior design practice, said: We wanted to use linoleum. The reasons
were simple: its available in good colours, its a green material and is
naturally biocidal.
International vinyl and linoleum flooring specialists Gerflor supplied
4,000m2 of Marmorette from the DLW Linoleum range for the
building, which hosts a mixture of laboratories, offices and medical
teaching facilities for the hospital and Glasgow University. The facade
of the 1970s building was changed to allow much more light into the
previously claustrophobic interior and the Marmorette was used to
create visual appeal and identification.
Jeremy Armitage said: We used the linoleum as a design tool
throughout. Each floor had alternating four metre wide stripes of light and
dark gray, slightly offset, running across it regardless of walls and spaces.

He added: The lift lobby on each floor had a way finding bright colour,
such as green, interrupting the two grays and that colour was repeated
elsewhere on the floor.
Despite being invented in the 1800s, linoleum could have been
created specifically for 21st century designers. Available in a range of
eye-catching colours and choice of surface treatments to reduce
cleaning and virtually eliminate polishing, DLW Linoleums best-sellers
Marmorette and Colorette have:

impeccable environmental credentials, because theyre made of

natural, mostly renewable, raw materials such as cork, jute and
linseed oil;
anti-bacterial properties and are hygienic and easy to clean;
a long lifespan;

Usually specified in the health and education sectors, as well as for

retail and office environments, the surface of DLW Linoleum is coated
in a choice of protective layers. The PUR Eco System, specified on this
contract, forms a strong bond with the linoleum to create a
permanently durable, abrasion-resistant surface with enhanced
resistance to chemicals and staining and is often used in areas where
cleaning is frequent and aggressive. Marmorette is available in three
thicknesses, 2mm, 2.5mm, and 3.2mm, and has 51 choices in its
palette, while Colorette is bright, vibrant and slightly textured in 23
colours in depths of 2.5mm and 3.2mm. As well as being slip, flame
and heat resistant, both ranges have acoustic options.
Kenny Smith, contracts director at MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd
of Hamilton, said the fitters had enjoyed the test of laying the
alternating stripe pattern across whole floors interrupted by many
walls. He said: It was one of the most challenging jobs we have done,
laying 40 metre lengths through several rooms at a slight angle. We spent
a lot of time taking measurements to make sure it was
perfect from one room to the next.
Also specified were 500m2 of Tarasafe Ultra, low maintenance, highhygiene slip resistant safety flooring for toilet and changing areas,
and 200m2 of Taradouche Elegance SD studded slip resistant safety
flooring for barefoot wet areas.

Achieving high levels of protection does not have

to come at the cost of aesthetics. Wall coatings can
be matched to a number of different colour standards
including NCS, RAL and BS, while wall sheet
protection systems can be cut into different shapes
and also come in an array of colours and finishes.
Some panel systems allow high quality images or
artwork to be embedded, creating bespoke floorto-ceiling designs, removing the worry of damage,
without compromising on hygiene.
With large numbers of visitors and high internal
traffic, healthcare facilities face potentially huge
maintenance costs to remedy surface damage,
while ensuring safe access to patients, visitors and
staff. Failure to keep surfaces damage-free not only
poses a health and safety risk but can compromise
hygiene standards and complicate cleaning
regimes.
Fortunately, a diverse range of products is available
to help improve access and maintain high levels of
hygiene. These are durable, keeping maintenance
and cleaning costs down and remain effective for
longer, so long-term costs are also reduced.

Marley Plumbing and Drainages full design service was

utilised for the new HQ for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service
incorporating the companys HDPE and PVCu soil and waste products.
The multi-million pound project began in 2012 to create a state-of-theart, three-storey building to incorporate offices, break out areas and
fully functional conference and meeting facilities for the staff.
The building was designed to be environmentally efficient, with lower
maintenance and running costs than the fire services previous
headquarters. In order to meet the clients long-term cost objectives,
we knew that we would need products that are virtually maintenance-free and able to withstand the daily
onslaught, commented Adrian Gration from contractor, Hayward Electrical. Therefore, we changed the
original specification to Marley Plumbing and Drainages HDPE and PVCu soil and waste products, as we
have used them before and knew that they would meet the high standards we needed.

An energy-efficient renewables solution

Pollen Homes, a family-run housebuilder and developer,

prides itself on its quality of build. The conversion of offices
into nine, highly prestigious apartments at Lawford House
in Staines has been completed after consultation with IBD
Distribution on heating and hot water delivery for the
dwellings. The original plan had been to use conventional gas
combi boilers for seven of the units and heat pumps for the
other two, but after discussions with IBD Distribution the
decision was made to opt for heat pumps throughout the
development. Managing director, Jeremy Pollen, approached IBD after an online search for companies
offering design and installation expertise for renewables projects. I had obtained a quote for the gas
service, which was very expensive. Taking this into account it made IBD's proposal to use Daikin heat
pumps throughout all the apartments affordable. IBD offered the best option for providing systems
without using gas, said Jeremy.

Winner of the British Toilet Associations Loo of the Year

2013 Award in the Water and Theme Parks category,
the washrooms of Paultons Family Theme Park have been
equipped with Polyrey compact grade laminates from its
Washroom Collection. Specified by Cubicle Systems,
the green of A036 Amandine and the off-white of B070
Blanc Mgeve, now adorn the cubicle doors, sink surrounds
and cubicle partitions of the new railway station, customer
and staff toilets. The bright and fresh feel that the products
bring to these spacious facilities has also been applied
in the mother and baby changing facilities, as well as the
medical centre. With excellent impact resistance, the laminate surfaces were a natural choice for the
washroom facilities at the theme park which sees over a million visitors each year.

Add the illusion of space to the smallest room

CR336

One of the most obvious things to suggest when attempting to make

the most of what little space is available in the smallest room in the
house, is to use wall-hung sanitaryware. Supporting the WC and the wash
basin and lifting it off the floor will give a greater illusion of space while
the slimline frame system used to hang the porcelain on the wall allows
the use of slimline cisterns and concealed pipework which will
be neatly tucked away behind the wall. Thanks to their slimline design,
Multikwik Sanitary Systems frames offer complete design freedom
to maximise bathroom space by saving vital centimetres and hiding all
the pipework. The range includes 820, 985 and 1,185mm frames and
features a module for all the various bathroom fittings, including WCs,
urinals, bidets, sinks and fittings for special needs, so it is possible to
design a bathroom for any customer.

Szerelmey completed two packages in the
Grade II listed buildings south-eastern quadrant,
on staircases and flooring, involving both new build
and restoration work. Richard Piggott, business
development manager at Szerelmey, said: This is a
fantastic project to have been involved in and were thrilled with the end result. We have worked with
BAL on many projects over the years and they continue to provide the excellent support, knowledge,

Small is beautiful
Well suited to the smaller room, where a stylish focal point is still
important, Paxfocus from the Focus range of fires, available in the UK
through Diligence International, is a wall-mounted fire that offers a
simple yet striking design. Capable of providing 4.5KW of heat output,
Paxfocus brings with it a compact design, reliability and adaptability.
At its widest point the fire measures 950mm but, from the fixing wall,
projects just 680mm into the room. This subtle and unobtrusive fire is
equipped with a built-in heat exchanger that passes ambient air from
the room, through channels, emerging as warm air. An adjustable
plate allows the fireplace to be off-set from the wall. The smoke outlet
can be connected to a vertical flue through the ceiling or to an elbow
leading out of the wall behind. Diligence International offers an
extensive collection of fires, meeting the needs for a variety of design
styles traditional or modern, spacious or compact.

Bemo and Prater forge new partnership

Prater has announced a new supply chain partnership

with Bemo UK for metal standing seam roofing,
having appointed the manufacturer as a Tier One supplier
within the companys supply chain. Prater has been a
member of the Kalzip installer network (Teamkal) for
nearly 20 years but took the decision to leave last month,
to allow a wider commercial and technically competent
offering to the market, thus enabling Prater to work
closely with the Bemo UK team in developing
relationships and strategy. Bemos extensive product portfolio is manufactured in the UK and utilises
market-leading technology to produce smooth, curved standing seam sheets, which are able to deal
with free-formed, complexly shaped architecture. Moreover, these products exceed the limits of any
other system currently on the market.

Fighting the vortex effect

The Redland 49 tile, with its ability to be fixed at
both top and bottom, is the first choice product
used to replace roofs around Heathrow airport
that have been damaged by the vortex effect.
A vortex is a circulating eddy of air, like a
mini-tornado, caused by low-flying aircraft.
The effect, which is particularly significant as
aircraft come in to land, is to suck tiles off the
roof. Replacement tiles need to be firmly fixed
and Redland 49 tiles allow for both clips and
nails to be used as required by the BRE guidance
document DG467. The small format of the tile
combined with this dual fixing provides the most
secure fixing possible. Heathrow airport has been
offering replacement roofs when vortex strikes
occur for over 20 years and the Redland 49 tile is
one of the products to have passed stringent wind
tunnel tests, qualifying it for use in the project.

The requirement for good quality, low maintenance and an

aesthetically pleasing end result led to Cembrits Contessa
natural slates being specified for Denbury Mews, a new
development in Devon. The slates have ensured a high
class appearance for the fifteen houses and coach houses
and the products versatility provided the answer to the
challenges posed. The roof of Denbury Mews is curved,
therefore requiring a slate that is easy to handle, lay and
cut all fulfilled by the choice of Contessa slate. Due to
the nature of this project with some of the roofs being at a curved angle, we required a good quality slate
that would allow us to cut on site all four edges, without shattering, said Chris Perrin, owner of Perrin
Construction. Having worked with Cembrits Contessa slates in the past, we knew that these slates
would be suitable for this project.
