undividedAndhraPradesh,everygovernmenthospitalservesover3lakhpatientswhileinBihar,thereisonlyonebedforevery8800people.
UnionMinisterforHealthJ.P.NaddareleasedtheNationalHealthProfile2015preparedbytheCentralBureauforHealthIntelligence
(CBHI)onTuesdayalongwithofficialsoftheMinistry,theDirectorateGeneralofHealthServicesandtheCBHI.
Everygovernmentallopathicdoctorservesapopulationofover11,000people,withBiharandMaharashtrahavingtheworstratios.The
numberofqualifiedallopathicdoctorsregisteredwithmedicalcouncilsfellin2014to16,000,orlessthanhalfthepreviousyearsnumber
thedatawashoweverprovisional,CBHIofficialssaid.Indianowhascumulatively9.4lakhallopathicdoctors,1.54lakhdentalsurgeons,and
7.37lakhAYUSHdoctorsofwhommorethanhalfareAyurvedicdoctors.Indias400medicalcollegesadmitanestimated47,000students
annually.
TheCentresshareoftotalpublicexpenditureonhealthhasfallenoverthelasttwoyears,andIndiaspendslessofitsGDPonhealththan
someoftheworldspoorestcountries.AmongallStates,undividedAndhraPradeshhadthehighestpublicexpenditureonhealthin201213.
GoaandthenortheasternStatesspentthemostonhealthpercapitawhileBiharandJharkhandspenttheleast.
Outofpocketprivateexpenditureonhealthhasrisensteadilyovertheyears,withthecostofmedicines,followedbythatofhospitalisation
accountingforthelargestshareofthehouseholdexpenditure.Absolutespending,aswellasitsshareintotalnonfoodexpenditure,riseswith
incomelevels.Keralaspendsthemostprivatelyonhealth.
Communicablediseases
DeathsfrommostcommunicablediseaseshavebeenfallingsteadilyinIndia.Despiterecordingover10lakhcases,deathsfrommalariaare
officiallydowntojustover500annuallyOdishaaccountedforoveroneinthreecasesofmalariain2014.Thenumberofrecorded
chikungunyacaseshasfallensincea2010outbreak,butMaharashtraaccountsfornearlyhalfofallcases.Justover40,000casesofdengue
wereofficiallyreportedin2014and131deaths.WhilethenumberofcasesofAcuteDiarrhoealDiseasehasriseneveryyearto1.16crorein
2014,mortalityfromthediseasehasbeensteadilydeclining.
However,2014sawasharpspikeincasesanddeathsduetoAcuteEncephalitisSyndrome,adiseaseconcentratedinUttarPradesh,Bihar,

Assam,andWestBengal.JapaneseEncephalitis,concentratedinAssamandUttarPradeshalsoroselastyear.Pulmonarytuberculosis
remainsthebiggestcommunicablediseasekillerinIndia,accountingforover63,000deathsin2014.Sincediseasedataislargelyreported
fromgovernmenthealthfacilitiesonly,itislikelytobeheavilyunderestimated,CBHIofficialssaid.
Noncommunicablediseasesareontherisewithcardiovasculardiseasesaccordingforaquarterofdeathsfromnoncommunicablediseases
andcanceraccountingforsixpercent.
