CONTRIBUTIONS IN PSYCHOLOGY
Hippocrates- provided the field of psychology with the theory
of the Four Humors, the first ever personality theory.
According to hippocrates, the individual was made up of four
humors, of which any one humor was perpetually dominant.
This dominant humor affected the individual''s personality
and made him/her one specific ''type'' of individual (thus
being called a type theory of personality).
St.Augustine- Into this Christian belief system arrived St.
Augustine, often labeled as the first psychologist
Thomas Hobbes- He is considered the first modern social
psychologist because of his emphasis on the relationship
between the individual and society. Hobbes believed that
understanding the psychology of individuals was necessary
before one could develop an understanding of the state and
government. He believed that humans are fearful and
predatory, and must submit completely to the supremacy of
the state in both secular and religious concerns. Hobbes
asserted that there is a difference between knowledge and
faith, which resulted in charges of atheistic tendencies.
John Locke- he is often called the "Father of English
Psychology." Locke has been recognized for several
important documents that have influenced the beginnings of
modern psychology. One of his most important works written
in 1690 was entitled, An Essay Concerning Human
Understanding. The work was considered a foundational text
in Western philosophy and brought up the model of how
people developed.
Charles Darwin- Darwin turned over his notes on animal
behavior shortly before his death, established the field
of comparative psychology. Paralleling the science of
comparative anatomy, this field seeks to provide insights
