1. (5 points) Find all relations specifying a function.

(1) f (3) = 5; f (6) = 5; f (9) = 6; f (12) = 6.
(2) g (3) = 5; g (3) = 6; g (4) = 6; g (4) = 7; g (5) = 8.
(3) h(3) = 0; h(5) = 1; h(7) = 2.
(4) k( 2) = 6; k( 1) = 6; k(0) = 6; k(1) = 6.

Answer. Function: (1), (3) and (4). Not Function: (2)

2. (5 points) Find the domain and range of f (x) = 0:7 x 7 + 5.

Answer. Step 1: y = f (x) = 0:7 x has the domain x  0 and range y  0.

Step 2: y = f (x 7) = 0:7 x 7 has the domain x  7 and range y  0.

p
Step 3: y = f (x 7) + 5 = 0:7 x 7 + 5 has the domain x  7 and range y  5.
3. (5 points) Express the function f (x) = x2
the graph.

6x + 5 in the vertex form and nd the vertex and sketch

Answer. By completing the square, we have

f (x) = x2

6x + 3 2

32 + 5 = (x 3)2

9 + 5 = (x 3)2

4;

which is the vertex form of f (x). It implies the vertex (3; 4) and the graph of f (x) containing the vertex
is as follows:

4. (5 points) Given that f is a quadratic function with minimum f (2) = 4, nd the vertex, range, and
x{intercepts.

Answer. A quadratic function f (x) means f (x) has the form f (x) = ax2 + bx + c of which vertex form

is f (x) = a(x h)2 + k with the vertex (h; k).

For a > 0, y = f (x) has the minimum value k at the vertex (h; k) and the range y  k.
For a < 0, y = f (x) has the maximum value k at the vertex (h; k) and the range y  k.
In this problem, the condition \f (x) has the minimum f (2) = 4" implies that f (x) has the vertex (2; 4)
and the range of y = f (x) is y 4. (Please confer the problem #2 above.) Since the graph has the
minimum 4, it does not touch the x{axis and so f (x) does not have any x{intercept.
5. (5 points) Suppose that $2; 000 is deposited in an account. How long (to the next whole year) will it
take the money in the account to reach $6; 000 if it is invested at 12% compounded monthly?

Answer. The (Discretely) Compound Interest Formula says

r mt
A=P 1+
:

The problem says \compounded monthly (12 times in a year)" and so we use the formula above.

Answer. The equation of the tangent line to the graph of f (x) at x = a is

f (a) = f 0 (a)(x

a):

1
Since f (x) = ln x has the derivative f 0 (x) = , so we get f 0 (1) = 1 and thus the equation of the tangent

y ln 1 = 1(x 1);
y = x 1:

1. (5 points) Suppose that $8000 is invested at an interest rate of 5:5% per year, compounded continuously.
How long would it take to double the investment?

Solution. The Continuous Compound Interest Formula implies

A = 8000e0:055t :

We look for the time t satisfying

2(8000) = 8000e0:055t ;

2 = e0:055t ;

0:055t = ln 2;

t=

ln 2
0:055

 12:6027:

Therefore, the answer is t 12:6027.

2. (5 points) Find the equation of the tangent line to the graph of f (x) = ex + 2 (x ln x) at x = 1.

Solution. The equation of the tangent line to the graph of f (x) at x = 1 is

y

f (1) = f 0 (1)(x

1):

Since f (1) = e1 + 2 (1 ln 1) = e + 2, so the equation becomes

Now we nd f 0 (1):

f 0 (x) = ex + 2 1

(e + 2) = f 0 (1)(x 1):

f 0 (1) = e + 2 (1

9 (Total 10 points) Consider the function f (x) = x3 + 3x2

(1) (3 points) Find the critical values.

24x + 6.

Solution. Di erentiating the function, we get

f 0 (x) = 3x2 + 6x

24 = 3(x2 + 2x 8) = 3(x + 4)(x 2) = 0

at x = 4 or x = 2:

Hence, f (x) has the critical values x = 4 and x = 2.

(2) (4 points) Determine the intervals where f (x) is increasing and the intervals where f (x) is decreasing.

Solution. We make the sign chart:

f 0 (x)

Decreases

By the chart, hence, f (x) is increasing on (

4) [ (2; 1), while it is decreasing on ( 4; 2).

(3) (3 points) Find the local extrema.

Solution. By the sign chart in (2) above and the First Derivative Test, we conclude that f (x) has the local
maximum at x = 4 with the value f ( 4) = 86, while it has the local minimum at x = 2 with the value
f (2) = 22.
