Christ the King

Lectionary 34
November 21st and 22nd, 2015
Holy Communion (V)

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

PRELUDE Adagio, from Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C J. S. Bach
WELCOME and INVOCATION
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

INTRODUCTION
Even after Israel had experienced the vagaries of kings, they still longed
for a true king to set things right. He would have the kings title of Anointed
One (Messiah); he would be the one like a human being (Son of Man)
given dominion in Daniels vision. Jesus is given these titles, even though
he is nothing like an earthly king. His authority comes from the truth to
which he bears witness, and those who recognize the truth voluntarily
listen to him. We look forward to the day he is given dominion, knowing his
victory will be the nonviolent victory of love.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Almighty God, all thoughts of truth and peace come from you. Kindle in
the hearts of all your children the love of peace, and guide with your
wisdom the leaders of the nations, so that your kingdom will go forth in
peace and the earth will be filled with the knowledge of your love, through
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

We invite you to stand and sing.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

GLORIA

Let us pray.
Almighty and ever-living God, you anointed your beloved Son to be priest
and sovereign forever. Grant that all the people of the earth, now divided by
the power of sin, may be united by the glorious and gentle rule of Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING:

2 Samuel 23:1-7

PSALM: Psalm 132:1-12

Now these are the last words of David:

The oracle of David, son of Jesse,
the oracle of the man whom God exalted,
the anointed of the God of Jacob,
the favorite of the Strong One of Israel:

Refrain:

2The spirit of the LORD speaks through me,

his word is upon my tongue.
3The God of Israel has spoken,
the Rock of Israel has said to me:
One who rules over people justly,
ruling in the fear of God,
4is like the light of morning,
like the sun rising on a cloudless morning,
gleaming from the rain on the grassy land.

Tone:

5Is not my house like this with God?

For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
ordered in all things and secure.
Will he not cause to prosper
all my help and my desire?
6But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away;
for they cannot be picked up with the hand;
7to touch them one uses an iron bar
or the shaft of a spear.
And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

LORD, re- | member David,

and all the hardships | he endured;
2
how he swore an oath | to the LORD
and vowed a vow to the Mighty | One of Jacob:
3
I will not come under the roof | of my house,
nor climb up in- | to my bed;
4
I will not allow my | eyes to sleep,
nor let my | eyelids slumber;
5until I find a place | for the LORD,
a dwelling for the Mighty | One of Jacob.
6
The ark! We heard it | was in Ephrathah;
we found it in the | fields of Jaar. R
7

Let us go to Gods | dwelling-place;

let us fall upon our knees be- | fore Gods footstool.
8
Arise, O LORD, into your | resting-place,
you and the ark | of your strength.
9
Let your priests be | clothed with righteousness;
let your faithful people | sing with joy.
10
For your servant | Davids sake,
do not turn away the face of | your anointed. R
11

The LORD has sworn an oath to David, and in truth, | will not break it:
A son, the fruit of your body, will I set up- | on your throne.
12
If your children keep my covenant and my testimonies that | I shall
teach them,
their children will sit upon your throne for- | evermore. R

SECOND READING: Revelation 1:4b-8

GOSPEL: JOHN 18:33-37

4b

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to
come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5and from Jesus
Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the
kings of the earth.
To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and made
us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and
dominion forever and ever. Amen.
7Look! He is coming with the clouds;
every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him;
and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.
So it is to be. Amen.
8I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who
was and who is to come, the Almighty.

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Glory to you, O Lord.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

33

Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him,
Are you the King of the Jews? 34Jesus answered, Do you ask this on
your own, or did others tell you about me? 35Pilate replied, I am not a
Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to
me. What have you done? 36Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this
world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be
fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my
kingdom is not from here. 37Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus
answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I
came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the
truth listens to my voice.

Please stand.

HYMN OF THE DAY: The King of Love My Shepherd Is (ELW 502)
BAPTISMAL RITE
PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATES

Verse: Blessed is the one who comes in the name | of the Lord.*
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our an- | cestor David.
(Mark 11:9)

God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope
through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us
from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united
with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the
Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world.
Amelias sponsors, Kelly Herrington and Christina Hughes present her:
We present Amelia Katherine for baptism.

The presiding minister addresses sponsors:

Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Amelia in the Christian faith as you
are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help her live in the covenant of
baptism and in communion with the church?
Response:
We do.
Sponsors or another representative of the congregation present Melissa.
I present Melissa, who desires to affirm her baptism in this assembly.
Let us pray.
Merciful God, we thank you for this sister, whom you have made your own
by water and the Word in baptism. You have called her to yourself,
enlightened her with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished her in the
community of faith. Uphold your servant in the gifts and promises of
baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth.
We ask this in the name of Christ.
Amen.
PROFESSION OF FAITH
The presiding minister addresses Amelias parents and sponsors and
Melissa. The assembly may stand and join in the responses.
I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the
faith of the church.
Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God?
I renounce them.
Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?
I renounce them.
The presiding minister addresses the candidates and the assembly.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived

by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.
THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over
the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in
which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered
Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from
slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and
anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and
resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up
to live in you.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who
are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given
honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, now and forever.
Amen.
BAPTISM
The pastor pours water over Amelias head, saying
Amelia Katherine, I baptize you in the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
The pastor makes the sign of the cross in oil on Amelias forehead

Amelia, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked
with the cross of Christ forever.

We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks
and praise to God and proclaim the Good News to all the world.

The assistant offers a baptismal candle to Amelia

Amelia, Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good
works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Please stand and greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

Let us welcome our newly baptized sister in Christ.

We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share:
join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative
and redeeming word to all the world.

PEACE
ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRAYERS
United into one by the power of the Holy Spirit, let us pray with all Gods
saints for healing, wholeness, and peace in all the earth.

AFFIRMATION IN THE PRESENCE OF THE ASSEMBLY

Melissa, You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to
continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism:
to live among God's faithful people,
to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper,
to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,
to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?
Response
I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.
People of God, do you promise to support and pray for Melissa, Amanda,
and her parents as they live in Christ?
We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.
Let us pray.
We give you thanks, O God that through water and the Holy Spirit you give
us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. Stir up in
Melissa the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and
the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and
forever.
Amen.

Let us rejoice with our sisters in Christ.

Please sit or kneel as you are able.

Each petition ends with:
Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
Into your care, Alpha and Omega, we entrust all for whom we pray. Be with
us now and always, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS AND PROUNOUNCEMENT OF
FORGIVENESS
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Gracious God,
have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given
ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent.
In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things
we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you,
and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in
newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins
are forgiven. By grace you have been saved, through faith. Almighty God
strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that your life may
reflect the love of Christ.

Amen.
ANTHEM AT THE OFFERING

Jubilate Deo Wood

We invite you to please stand and sing:

OFFERTORY HYMN

PREFACE
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray. O God, ruler of heaven and earth, all that we have and all that
we are come through you. We offer back in thanksgiving a portion of what
you have given us: our time, our work, and our wealth. With them we
dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made,
through Jesus Christ, who gave himself for the salvation of the world.
Amen.

DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, you have brought us this
far along the way. In times of bitterness you did not abandon us, but guided
us into the path of love and light. In every age you sent prophets to make
known your loving will for all humanity. The cry of the poor has become
your own cry; our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire.
In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant to preach good news to
the afflicted, to break bread with the outcast and despised, and to ransom
those in bondage to prejudice and sin.

and hope of your Son. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever.
Amen.
Crucified, risen Lord of heaven and earth, remember us in your kingdom,
and teach us to pray:
LORD'S PRAYER

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup we proclaim the
Lords death until he comes.
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we await the day when
Jesus shall return to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death.
Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, Amen
Amen.
Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate, to fill the hearts of all who share this
bread and cup with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the
world. Come, Spirit of freedom! And let the church say, Amen
Amen.
Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age,
that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection, we might live in the freedom

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Clement
Monday, November 23, 2015
Clement was the third bishop of Rome. He is best remembered for a letter
he wrote to the congregation in Corinth, still struggling with the same
problems that led to Paul's letters to them. As did Paul, he focused on the
need for love among Christians.
Miguel Agustn Pro

Monday, November 23, 2015

Pro grew up in a time when the Mexican revolutionaries accused the church
of siding with the wealthy. He became a Jesuit priest, and worked on behalf
of the poor and homeless. Falsely accused of throwing a bomb at a
government official, he was executed, but not before crying out "Long live
Christ the King!"
J. Falckner, J. Jones, W. Passavant
Tuesday, November 24, 2015
Not only was Falckner the first Lutheran ordained in North America, but he
published a catechism which was the first Lutheran book published on the
continent. Jones was the Lutheran church's first African American pastor
and carried out missionary work in Philadelphia which led to the formation
there of the first African American Lutheran congregation (St. Paul's).
William Passavant helped to establish hospitals and orphanages in a
number of cities and was the first to introduce deaconesses to the work of
hospitals in the United States.
Isaac Watts
Wednesday, November 25, 2015
Thought by many to be the greatest hymnwriter in the English language,
Watts as a youth was critical of the quality of the metrical psalter of the
time. He wrote about 600 hymnsmany based on the psalms, but others
that are not.
The Altar flowers are administered by the worship committee. The 2016
Altar Flower chart will be posted on the bulletin board in the lower lobby
the first week of December and there is attached to the bulletin board a tearoff sheet for donors to complete and hand into the office or place in the
offering plate for proper publication in the bulletin.
If you would like to purchase flowers for worship in memory of or in honor
of someone, please sign up. The cost is $35 per arrangement, and checks
should be made out to Trinity Lutheran Church. The contact person is Mary

A Message from Lutheran

Immigration and Refugee
Service (LIRS)
Support and Protect Syrian Refugees
In light of the tragic attacks in Paris, we must stand
together with vulnerable Syrian refugees who seek safety
and a future. Reacting out of fear, Governors of over 25
states along with Members of Congress, have proposed
extreme measures that would exclude all Syrian refugees
from the protection of the United States resettlement
system. This is not an acceptable response to this tragedy.
Our faith calls us to stand for welcome, even in the
wake of fear. "Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for
wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other
and for everyone else." 1 Thessalonians 5:15 As people of
faith, we cannot turn our backs on our Syrian brothers and
sisters as they flee the same violence from which we seek
to protect ourselves.
The United States refugee resettlement program has a
sophisticated and multi-layered approach to vetting any
prospective refugee prior to entering our country. Indeed,

refugees are the most highly screened population

that enters the United States. The current screening
process often takes years to complete and includes face-toface interviews, database checks, and biometrics by the
Department of Homeland Security, FBI, Department of
Defense and multiple intelligence agencies.
LIRS asks that you contact your Governor and Members
of Congress TODAY and urge them to protect Syrian
refugees. Your tireless commitment to protecting the
world's most vulnerable does make an impact. Please
consider forwarding this alert to your friends to amplify your
voice!

In peace,
Brittney Nystrom
Director for Advocacy

For more information on LIRS efforts to support

Syrian refugees, visit lirs.org/Syria.

There are two ways that you can take action:

Call on your Governor to accept Syrian

refugees in your state. Sadly, the number of
Governors stating they will ban Syrian resettlement
continues to grow.
Call the offices or write to your Members of
Congress and let them know that you stand for
welcome for Syrian refugees. Urge them to oppose
any Congressional action that would limit vulnerable
Syrian refugees' access to protection.

While the United States must balance the integrity of our

resettlement system with our desire to provide protection to
vulnerable refugees, we must not bow to fear. As
Christians, as Americans, and as global citizens we
must stand for welcome. We will keep you informed as
Congressional action continues to center on Syrian
refugees. I remain grateful for your commitment to
vulnerable populations, especially as so many are
responding with fear rather than welcome and protection.

Melissa Campion has been worshipping with us at Old Trinity since June
