The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet was named delta. Its sign was a
triangle a three sided figure. Today the word delta means the triangular group of
islands at the mouth of a river.
Delta are formed by the rivers themselves. Large rivers may carry sand and
fine soil as they sweep towards their mouths. Near their outlets, rivers usually slow,
and can less easily carry their burdens. Sand and silt are dropped when rivers enter
a larger body of water. Not all rivers form delta. Ocean currents may be strong
enough to sweep the river water away before sand and silt are deposited. Or the
deposits may themselves be swept away.
The fertile soil of the Nile delta has made it famous. Mans history in this delta
dates back for thousands of years.

Text 2: In the very distant geological past all animals were aquatic. The very first
vertebrates, or animals with backbones, of which we have any fossil record, lived in
the water. These vertebrates, the fish, were adapted to underwater living. Their
streamlined bodies were covered with scales to reduce surface friction: they had
muscular tails so that they could swim swiftly in such a dense medium as water; and
they were endowed with gills for breathing underwater.
Descendants of fish-type ancestors crossed the seashore barrier and
accommodated themselves to life on land. As amphibians, they possessed limbs
instead of fins and lungs instead of gills. But they never became completely free of
the bonds that tied them to the water; even today many amphibians return to the
water to lay their eggs.
Millions of years after the first clumsy amphibians crawled over the land, newer types
of land dwellers appeared; these animals gave rise to the present-day reptiles and
mammals. They were more completely converted for land dwelling, with bodies and
biological activities far different from those of fish. With these special adaptations,
mammals have been able to colonize the woods and meadows, the deserts and high
mountains, often far removed from the sea.

25approximately 8,7 million telecommuters. But although the numbers are rising
annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business
Week published The Portable Executive as its cover story a few years ago. Why
hasnt telecommuting become more popular ?
Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance
on the part of many managers. These executives claim that supervising the
telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the country would be too
difficult, or, at least, systems for managing them are not yet developed, thereby
complicating the managers responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are
reluctant to accept the opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular
interaction with a group, and many are concerned that they will not have the same
consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting. Some
people feel that even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they
never really get away from the office.

TEXT 2.
The three phases of human memory are the sensory memory , the shortterm memory, and the long term memory. This division of the memory into phase is
based on the length of time of the memory.
Sensory memory is instantaneous memory. It is an image or memory that
enters your mind only for a short period of time; it comes and goes in under a
second. The memory will not last longer than that unless the information enters the
short-term memory.
IV. Read The following passage and choose the best answer:
The influenza virus is a single molecule composed of millions of individual
atoms. Although bacteria can be considered a type of plant, secreting poisonous
substances into the body of the organism they attack, viruses, like the influenza virus,
are living organisms themselves. We may consider them regular chemical molecules
since they have strictly defined atomic structure; but on the other hand, we must
consider them as being alive since they are able to multiply in unlimited quantities.
An attack brought on by the presence of the influenza virus in the body
produces a temporary immunity, but, unfortunately, the protection is against only the
type of virus that caused the influenza. Because the disease can be produced by any
one of three types, referred to as A, B, or C, and many strains within each type,
immunity to one virus will not prevent infection by another type or strain.
Approximately every ten years, worldwide epidemics of influenza called
pandemics occur. Thought to be caused by new strains of type-A virus, these
pandemic viruses have spread rapidly, inflecting millions of people. Epidemics or28

or as long as you are actively using it.If you repeat a fact to yourself, that fact will stay
in your short-term memory as long as you keep repeating it.Once you stop repeating
it, etheir it is forgotten or it moves into long-term memory.
Long-term memory is the huge memory tank that can hold idies and images

Read the passage and choose the correct answers.
History books recorded that the first film with sound was The Jazz Singer in
1927. But sound films, or talkies, did not suddenly appear after years of silent
screenings. From the earliest public performances in 1896, films were accompanied
by music and sound effects. These were produced by a single pianist, a small band,
or a full-scale orchestra; large movie theatres could buy sound-effect machines.
Research into sound that was reproduced at exactly at the same time as the pictures
- called 'synchronized sound' began soon after the very first films were shown. With
synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and speak. As early
as 1896, the newly invented gramophone (may hat), which played a large disc
carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system. The biggest
disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become unsynchronized if, for
example, the gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed.
This system was only effective for a single song or dialogue sequence.
In the 'sound-on-film' system, sound was recorded as a series of marks on
celluloid which could be read by an optical sensor. These signals would be placed on
the film alongside the image, guaranteeing synchronization (s ng b hoa ). Short
feature films were produced in this way as early as 1922. This system eventually
brought us 'talking pictures'.

The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet was named delta. Its sign was a
triangle a three sided figure. Today the word delta means the triangular group of
islands at the mouth of a river.
Delta are formed by the rivers themselves. Large rivers may carry sand and fine soil
as they sweep towards their mouths. Near their outlets, rivers usually slow, and can
less easily carry their burdens. Sand and silt are dropped when rivers enter a larger
body of water. Not all rivers form delta. Ocean currents may be strong enough to
sweep the river water away before sand and silt are deposited. Or the deposits may
themselves be swept away.
The fertile soil of the Nile delta has made it famous. Mans history in this delta dates
back for thousands of years.

Long ago prehistoric man began to domesticate a number of wild plants and
animals for his own use. This not only provided more abundant food but also allowed
more people to live on a smaller plot of ground. We tend to forget that all of our
present-day pets, livestock, and food plants were taken from the wild and developed
into the forms we know today.
As centuries passed and human cultures evolved and blossomed, humans
began to organise their knowledge of nature into the broad field of natural history.
One aspect of early natural history concerned the use of plants for drugs and
medicine. The early herbalists sometimes overworked their imaginations in this
respect. For example, it was widely believed that a plant or part of a plant that
resembles an internal organ would cure ailments of that organ, Thus, an extract
made from a heart-shaped leaf might be prescribed for a person suffering from heart
problems.
Nevertheless, the overall contributions of these early observers provided the

Reducing your intake of sweet foods is one way to keep your teeth healthy.
The least cavity-causing way to eat sweets is to have them with meals and not
between. The number of times you eat sweets rather than the total amount determine
how much harmful acid the bacteria in your saliva produces. But the amount of
sweets influences the quantity of your saliva. Avoid, if you can, sticky sweets that
stay in your mouth a long time. Also try to brush and floss your teeth after eating
sugary foods. Even rinsing your mouth with water is effective. Whenever possible,
eat foods with fiber, such as raw carrot sticks, apples, etc... that scrape off plaque,
acting as a toothbrush. Cavities can be greatly reduced if these rules are followed
when eating sweets.

In addition to providing energy, fats have other functions in the body. The fatsoluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are dissolved in fats, as their name implies. Good
source of these vitamins have high oil or fat content, and the vitamins are stored in
the bodys fatty tissues. In the diet, fats cause food to remain longer in the stomach,
thus increasing the feeling of fullness for some time after a meal is eaten.
Fats add variety, taste and texture to foods, which accounts for the popularity
of fried foods. Fatty deposits in body have an insulating and protective value. The
curves of the human female body are due mostly to strategically located fat deposits.
Whether a certain amount of fat in the diet is essential to human health is not
definitely known. When rats are fed a fat-free diet, their growth eventually ceases,
their skin becomes inflamed and scaly and their reproductive systems are damaged.
Two fatty acids, linoleic and arachidonic acids, prevent these abnormalities and
hence are called essential fatty acids. They are also required by a number of other
animals, but their roles in human beings are debatable. Most nutritionists consider
linoleic fatty acid an essential nutrient for humans.

With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and speak. As
early as 1896, the newly invented gramophone (may hat), which played a large disc
carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system. The biggest
disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become unsynchronized if, for
example, the gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed.
This system was only effective for a single song or dialogue sequence.
In the 'sound-on-film' system, sound was recorded as a series of marks on
celluloid which could be read by an optical sensor. These signals would be placed
on the film alongside the image, guaranteeing synchronization (s ng b hoa ).
Short feature films were produced in this way as early as 1922. This system
eventually brought us 'talking pictures'.

From the seeds themselves to the machinery, fertilizers and pesticides - The Green
Revolution regimen depend heavily on technology. One (91) alternative , however,
depends much (92) less on technology - organic farming. Many organic farmers use
machinery, but (93) not chemical fertilizers or pesticides. (94) Instead of chemical
soil enrichers, they use animal manure and plant parts not used as food
-,natural,organic fertilizers that are clearly a renewable (95) source . Organic farmers
also use alternatives (96) to pesticides; for example they may rely on natural
predators of certain insect pests. (97) If the need arises, they can buy the eggs and
larvae of these natural predators and introduce them into their crop fields. They use
(98) other techniques to control pests as well, like planting certain crops together
because one crop repels the other's pests. Organic farmers do not need a lot of land;
(99) in fact organic farming is perfectly (100) suited to small farms and is relatively
inexpensive. Finally, many organic farmers' average yields compare favorably with
other farmers' yields.

normally used as a noun. When they are used in this way, they are similar in
meaning, signifying influence, impact or change.
Note: we talk about someone or something having an effect on something or
someone. If we use effect as a verb, it means to carry out or to cause
something to happen, but it is used only in very formal English
