Dear Parish Family,

Because of an obligation made nearly a year ago, I will not be able to celebrate the great Feast
of Christ the King with you all, a loss which causes me the greatest sorrow. However, I am confident
that Father McElwee will do a splendid job in my place. He is a priest whom I admire very much.
But I thought that I would share some of my thoughts on this great feast day in my column since I
will not be able to use the homily to do so. The Feast of Christ the King was established in the year
1925 by Pope Pius XI in response to the terrible threat of Communism. In 1925, Communism had
conquered Russia and several of her neighbors, and these countries were suffering horrific atrocities
at the hands of the mad communists. Priests were killed, monasteries burned down, millions of
peasants starved to death on worthless collective farms. Young persons could be killed for merely
making a sign of the cross or cracking a joke about the government. There were spies everywhere
who reported both real and fake offenses. Basically, the Communist government in Russia was trying
to set itself up as a god unto itself. It wanted the same absolute devotion, worship, and total selfsacrifice that were formally given only to God. Government in itself is a good thing but it is
blasphemy for government to claim equal authority with God or with Jesus Christ.
To combat this madness, Pius XI wanted to remind the world of who the True King and True
God is; that is Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. He alone is absolute sovereign over the whole earth.
He alone can demand the total loyalty and obedience of every man, woman, and child on the
planet. He alone has the right to judge what is moral and what is immoral. If Christ has forbidden a
certain thing, then it is forbidden no matter how popular it might become. And if Christ has made
obligatory a certain thing, then it remains binding for all of us no matter how much it might be
resented. Christ has every right to make these demands because he created the entire universe; he
created the human race, and individually creates each and every human being uniquely and
unrepeatable endowing him or her with an immortal soul. (So basically we would not exist without
him). Christ furthermore became a human like us, being both fully God and fully man, and
deliberately suffered and died on the cross to redeem each and every human being from eternal
death. All this gives Jesus absolute and awesome Kingship, the beginning and end of all things, the
supreme ruler of the entire earth and of each individual human.
Of course his kingship is a kind kingship, and he prefers to administer mercy rather than justice,
and wants to love him not fear him. But none of that subtracts from the absolute nature of his
Kingship. Jesus wants us to love him in a mysterious two-fold way. He wants us to love him like our
dearest friend, AND, he wants us to respect his absolute kingship and full regal power. It is possible
to love him in both ways at the same time and it is best to do so.
Thus we should remember that though he shares power with earthly men, there is a limit to
their authority since Jesus Christ is the True King and his Law cannot ever be changed by mere
human law. A reasonable human law which does not contradict Gods law is recognized by God as
valid. But if a human law ever attempts to contradict the Law of Christ the King, then that law is
automatically invalid and all Christians are obliged to disobey it. This is perhaps the most important
topic of our times and so I will take it up in more detail in my next column. For now, let us all hail
Jesus Christ, the KING of KINGS!

STEWARDSHIP: GODS NOT STINGY

(Continued from last weekends bulletin) Some, when told

they should tithe, reply, I dont gotta do anything except die
and pay taxes. These are two well-known gottas and you, no
doubt, have heard this said. However, there is another gotta
which says: We are ALL stewards, not owners, of whatever
time, talent, or treasure that we have. God entrusted this to us,
expecting us to make good of our time, skills, and whatever
wealth we have. Its a gotta that expects us to use it according
to Him who provides it. As Fr. Max told us in last weeks
homily, we owe our very existence to Him.
When you tithe, you give back to God, telling Him, I know
that all I have comes from you, and to prove it, I give back the
share of it you have asked for. Have you ever thought how
little God asks from us? It is much LESS than man asks. If I
use a mans land for growing wheat, I must give the owner
around a third of all the wheat I grow there. We owe a debt to
God far MORE urgent and necessary than any debt we could
possibly owe our neighbor! God should come first when we
budget our finances. That is how Fr. John Reinkemeyer taught
us: fill your tithing envelopes first, then the other necessities.
He said, In this way, you never cheat God. He doesnt come
in second. This is also a good way to teach tithing to your
children. Give thought in the days ahead about what your gifts
to God will be in the coming year.
