Introduction

Take a look at the United States today! Look at the city around you; notice the types of
business and organizations in your city. After observing, ask yourself: how well does
my community promote the arts? As I pondered this myself, and looked around for
creative and art related centers, I found that the art communities in my city are few and
far between. As a student of the arts, I have grown to discover that the creative outlets
are primarily found in the metropolitan areas. More in-depth research of art centered
businesses, organizations and creative communities shows a few integrated topics of
importance. In regards to the question,
What are the factors that influence the success
of the arts within the community?
This
paper will address influences that affect the arts

through the disciplines of economics (economy), politics (policies), and sociology

(culture). These three areas are variables that can influence an arts organization. In this,
the focus will be on creative centers and creative communities with the emphasis on
the organizations rather than the individual artists, or art entertainment industries. The
importance of this research is to re-evaluate the way the arts are currently supported
and funded. Increasing the sustainability of these organizations will allow for better
focus on the creativity, innovation and contribution to economic development. The
central goal to advocating for the creative centers is to stimulate an environment where
the artists talent can grow and bridge the gap between the needs of our community
and the resourcesavailable. In tackling this question it is imperative to address the
issue wisely by gathering muiltlple lens of input. If one were to only consider one

discipline for this issue the very little will be improved to foster the arts. Or another
possible outcome that might be caused by looking at just one discipline will be the
decrease in quality of the arts due to the focus in the results of economy or results of
the polices made. Therefore, pioneering the arts must be tackled through an
interdisciplinary lens.

The credentials of this source can be attributed to the team of Policy and
Research Department staff of Americans for the Arts. Along with the leadership of
Robert L. Lynch as CEO. The national report has a wide and deep scope of the arts
influencing the success of the economy and along with the following topics: creative
economy, challenges of funding, economic performances, nonprofit arts and culture.
The objective of the authors perspective was very thorough, professional and
unbiased to personal preferences. Any limitations, that were not covered were all noted
as areas: of exclusions. The material discussion was very persuasive. I see the article
supporting many different focusing regards to factors that influence the arts.

Argo Klamer is a professor of cultural economics at the Erasmus University and Dean
of the Academia Vitae in Deventer. As for Lyudmila Petrova is PhD student in the
faculty of history and arts at the Erasmus University, where she also earned an MA in
cultural economics and cultural entrepreneurship. The authors of this article placed a
well diversified effort to addressing various financing models and their influence
towards the support, creativity and sustainability of the arts in the economy. The
material addressed was very well communicated while still remaining unprejudiced
towards their research. They address both the hindrances and facilitators of the
different models that finance the arts. The conclusive argument for this article was very
convincing the suggested cloche of actions to better address ending an artistic
organization.

The credentials of this author are proceed by the title of Doctor of Philosophy at
Indiana University. This article included information that addressed and analyzed the
revenue sources for art organizations. After reading the material and seeing how
meticulously the data was collected for this article and in addition to voice of the writer
addressing the issues of advocacy in the arts, I feel he addressed his argument with an

open mind and concluded with much logic and statistical data to reinforce the original
concerns.
Policies
Lewis, L., & McKay, S. W. (2008). Seeking Policies for Cultural Democracy:
Examining the Past, Present, and Future of U.S. Nonprofit Arts. Studies in
Art Education, (4). 294.
The credentials of these authors stem from an art education background from Virginia
Common Wealth University (Mckay), and University of North Texas (Lewis). Lewis also
has the experience with an art leadership program under under the Priddy
Scholarships in Arts Leadership. The objectivity of the writers is very strong towards
the advocacy of nonprofit art funds. They argue that our current way of funding is
impoverishing the local artists of the US, and they address the importance of
re-examining the policies in place for nonprofit funding of the arts. After reading the
article the content does debate their possible solutions as a pressing focus. However,
despite the strong voicing of opinion, the two writers made a strong case to their
position. The authors looked at the situation through multiply areas of influence, they
stated a wide scope of evidence to support their findings. Overall this article was so
well dressed that much of my further investigation came from sources of comments
noticed in this article.

States. With interests in downtown redevelopment and the role of arts in culture.
This source provides pivotal information in regards to the policy literature, policy
development. It goes into good dialogue with topics of pro arguments an anti
argument in regards to the funding of the arts. Stroms persuasiveness towards
at the idea of forming a new policy frame is well supported information of current
and past policy trends that were discussed. Her tone towards addressing the
matter were even-handed.
Renz, L. (1994). The role of foundations in funding the arts. Journal Of Arts
Management, Law
& Society, 24(1), 57.
The credentials of this authors are centered around their research for foundation giving
which consists of material that covers statistical data on trends in private, corporate
and community foundations. I would describe the content of this article to be
informational in regards to how grant making foundations contribute to the
philanthropic contributions of the arts. However, this article only focuses on funding
the arts through grants with small references to government resources. The writer

spoke fairly with on the material that she discussed displaying her knowledge as
realistic facts rather than addressing grants as the superior way of funding the arts.
This article was useful in the sense of gathering deeper insight to the world of
foundation funding. However, I use this article as enhancement to the topics discussed
in Lewis & Mckay article. In regards to the conclusion of this article communicates the
various areas grant funding affects in funding the arts.

The credentials of Fleming, stem back from holding a doctorate degree in
anthropology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. The authors perspective
on the topic is was very specific to studying the area of Chatham County, North
Carolina. The author spoke on topics of creative economy, sustainability and
demographics. Flemings article brings up many good concerns and informs the
reader of what would help be the appropriate skills or tasks to aid a creative
economy in the midst of a rural area. Despite the date having surveys and data
from a narrow scope in geographically I believe the suggested application to
sustain the arts is of great value.

thoughts given does support previous articles.Wood supports the same data of
other articles with an underlying ethos of emotion. This article can be used to

Ivey is a director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at
Vanderbilt University and former NEA Chair. The information of this writing is
brief and summaries an interesting view on holding a cultural right to the arts.
Despite the important concerns of the article the basis to using this article would
be light. The main focus of to using this article is to contribute to the evidence of
sustainability. The objectivity of Ivey was even-handed in addresses the the art
ecology.
Conclusion
In conclusion, by integrating the three disciplines of economics (economy), Politics
(policies), and Sociology (culture) individuals can have a greater influence in change of
our current art organizational structure. The structure, and in which we manage the art
organizations is paramount to how the organization will serve and support the
community around them.
The
culture of the organization must be in congruence with
what the community needs. By meeting the needs of the community the next stage of
influence is addressed is the factors of economy, which we consider, as how the

community spends their money on the arts, along with the funding models that
maintain the sustainability of the organization. However before the above topics can be
put into action most art organizations will need to meet the requirements of political
policies. Therefore all disciplines effects one another causing the efforts of pioneering
the Arts to be an interdisciplinary effort.
