debussy prludes

even the foundation of a Socit Chopin.
It appears that two publishers were racing
to issue rival sets of Prludes, as understood implicit homages to the centenary.
Early in 1910 the publisher Heugel planted
a first flag, with three Prludes by Gabriel
Faur, and more announced to follow. If
Heugel won a first round there, set and
match appear to have gone to the publisher Durand, who promptly followed
with Debussys complete 1er Livre. (Faur
added six more Prludes to his collection
later in 1910, but his heart was clearly not
in commercial competition, and he then
let it rest there. As far as posterity is concerned, theres plenty of room for both
sets.)
The final piece of jigsaw falls into place,
almost literally, with the first chord of
Debussys first Prlude, Danseuses de
Delphes, whose exact disposition and
unusual voicing (the melody placed two
notes down from the top) comes verbatim from the end of Chopins Prlude in
famous Moorish gate in Granada, showing extremes of brilliant light and dark
shade that he reportedly sought to capture; Les fees sont dexquises danseuses
is a line from James Barries Peter Pan in
Kensington Gardens, in an edition beautifully illustrated by Arthur Rackham (given
to Debussys daughter Chouchou for
Christmas); La terrasse des audiences
quotes a line from a newspaper report
of the festivities surrounding the coronation of George V as Emperor of India; and
Hommage S. Pickwick caricatures not
only Pickwick but, in an endearing way, an
England whose literature Debussy loved
but whose inhabitants he found somewhat ridiculous.

His playing took the breath away. He combined the black and white notes of Brouillards
to create soft grey tonalities, and went on to
dazzle us with a wonderful range of effects in
which a flawless technique was put to the service of some very original interpretations.
Michael Church on Francesco Piemontesi
performing Debussys Prludes, Independent, *****
Francesco Piemontesi is a pianist of exceptional refinement of expression which is allied
to a consummate technical skill. His playing
is characterised by a wide and rich palette
of colour, and he is known for his interpretation of repertoire ranging from classical and
early Romantic German repertoire to Ravel,
Debussy and beyond.
Of one of his great teachers and mentors,
Alfred Brendel, Piemontesi says that Brendel
taught him to love the detail of things.
Born in Locarno, Piemontesi rose to international prominence with prizes at several
major competitions, including the 2007 Queen
Elisabeth Competition, and between 20092011 he was a BBC New Generation Artist. In
2012, Piemontesi was announced as Artistic
Director of the Settimane Musicali di Ascona.
19
Piemontesi studied with Arie Vardi before collaborating with Alfred Brendel, Murray Perahia,
Ccile Ousset and Alexis Weissenberg.
