recoverableoilandthathasledmanyoperators,includingRoyalDutchShellandChevronCorporationtoabandonoilfieldsinAfricathattheyconsideredsmallor
marginal.
"TheywerenotworththeeconomicinvestmenttoShellorChevronbutyouknowwhattheysay:Oneman'smeatisanotherman'spoison,"saidOputa."Thesesmall
fieldsaregoodforsmall,independentandindigenouscompanies.Somewellscouldproducefor10to15years.Theywillmakemoney,"hesaid.
InvestorsintriguedbyAfrica'ssmalloffshorefieldsareoftenwaryoftwothings.Oneisthecostandavailabilityofinnovativetechnologythatcanmakeexploitingsmall
fieldscommerciallyunviableandtheotheristhefactthatmanysmallfieldsarelocatedindeepwaters.
