Farjam Collection: A Treasure House of Great Art

The Farjam Collection @ DIFC opened in March 2009 as a non-profit space to display the world-class private collection of
Dr Farjam. Nine months on, the team has held two exhibitions, introduced i-Pod tours, First Wednesdays, and Art Soirees,
welcomed 400 children and students as part of School and University Programmes, and paved the way for an exciting calendar
of exhibitions and events for the coming year. DIFC Bulletin interviews Emilie Faure, Collection and Exhibitions Manager, to
discover more about the collection.

Apart from the fact that they are part of Islamic history, what are some of the themes that the Farjam Collection’s
Islamic art exhibitions represent?
There are a number of themes that group together the rich variety of works in the Collection. It is an immensely broad
collection with pieces originating from the entire history of Islam. The Farjam Collection @ DIFC holds regular exhibitions
that group these works thematically, offering new readings into some of the finest Islamic works of art ever produced. All
our exhibitions are curated and supplemented with educational materials that allow audiences to gain further insights into
the exquisite pieces. Our first exhibition was titled “Highlights of Islamic Art” and the second “The Holy Qur’an”. The
catalogues of both exhibitions are available to download from our website.

Can you tell us more about the Quranic works of art in the Collection featured in your exhibition The Holy
Qur’an?
The Holy Qur’an exhibition, held in August 2009, featured Qur’anic manuscripts from across the vast region extending from
Andalusia to Mughal India. Some of the pieces featured in the event, written in early Kufic script, are some of the oldest
copies of the Qur’an ever made. The exhibition allowed visitors to compare this more graphic style of calligraphy with
the beautifully illuminated works of a later period. One of the highlights of the exhibition was a striking Ka’aba Curtain
Door from 1828, weaved in silver and gold. A section from the Baysunqur Quran proved a particular favourite with the
children taking part in our school programmes. This fragment, which was part of one of the largest holy books ever made,
measuring 170 cm in height, is one of the finest examples of Mohaqqaq script. We’ve designed the exhibition to appeal
to all visitors, ranging from those who are familiar with Qur’anic manuscripts to those who have never seen one. In both
cases, the information provided about calligraphic practices and styles of illumination allow visitors to look at the works
from many perspectives.
On-site educational programming is an integral part of the activities of Farjam Collection @ DIFC. How have the
programmes been received?
At The Farjam Collection @ DIFC, we consider education as the key to enhancing public engagement with art. We offer a
number of educational programmes that are free and open to the public. The popular First Wednesdays series is held on
the first Wednesday of every month at 1.00 pm; visitors are given a short guided tour of the exhibition by an expert in the
field. Each week, we have a new expert.

We are particularly pleased with the success of our School & University Programmes launched in November 2009. School
children are introduced to the exhibition and given activity sheets to complete before undertaking art and craft activities
based on the works they have learned about. Also as part of the programme, university students are led through
personalised guided tours of the exhibition that give them a chance to appreciate and draw some of the pieces in their
own time. More information about these programmes as well as details of forthcoming Panel Discussions can be found at
www.farjamcollection.com

What are some of Farjam Collection’s major exhibitions planned for 2010?
The pieces in the Farjam Collection are diverse going even beyond the sphere of Islamic art. The rich diversity of the
collection gives us an opportunity to organise exhibitions that highlight many different periods and styles.

Our next exhibition will reveal an aspect of the collection not yet showcased at The Farjam Collection @ DIFC. “From
Matisse to Warhol: Works on Paper by Modern Masters” celebrates the medium of paper, offering visitors a rare insight into
the creative process of some of the most talented draftsmen of the modern era. The exhibition features works of renowned
artists including Picasso, Dali and Chagall that have never been seen before by the public. This will be followed by the “Iran
Inside Out” exhibition focused on contemporary art that will be held during Art Dubai in March. The show first opened at
The Chelsea Art Museum in New York during the summer.
Art Exhibitions

Artspace
January 2010: Hussein Madi Exhibition (January 12 – February 11, 2010)
Hussein Madi, painter, sculptor and printmaker, is considered among the Arab world’s foremost artists. His joyful experiments
in colour and form have resulted in a unique body of work that relates to modern artists like Matisse and Picasso as well
as to the principles of divine harmony that inform the abstract designs of Islamic art. Whether in two or three dimensions,
Madi’s lines sing with a spontaneous freedom that belies the careful, even exacting, calculations that the artist invests in
each work. Madi’s art has been viewed by thousands of people around the world at such venues as the British Museums,
the Venice Biennale and Tokyo’s Ueno Museum.

February 2010: Zakaria Ramhani Exhibition (February 14 – March 11, 2010)

As the son of a father renowned for his typically Moroccan and traditional paintings of scenery, portraits and still life’s,
Zakaria Ramhani learned the art of painting very early in the family studio. After school and college, where he was trained
in art and education, he developed a universe of isolated and expressive human figures that, placed in the foreground of
compositions saturated with colours and symbolic objects but devoid of a clear narrative, compel feelings of idleness and
desolation in the spectator. In 2006, Zakaria was the youngest person from his country to receive a bursary from the French
government to participate in a creative residency at the Cité Internationale des arts in Paris.

The Empty Quarter

January 2010: Sacred Sights of India (January 5 – February 5, 2010)
The Empty Quarter Fine Art Photography Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of rare vintage and contemporary
photographic prints on India. In a country as vast and paradoxical as India Rich in culture, tradition and a generosity
of spirit, this remarkable Exhibition brings the images from a world nearly forgotten, where the people continue to live
their traditional lifestyles largely undisturbed. It illustrates the people and their land so unique that the patterns of their
environment seem to radiate throughout their beings. This fascinating journey explores together a varied group of images
from the late 19th century overview of Calcutta by Bourne and Shepard to the poignant images the women of Falkland
Road, in Bombay by some of the most iconic renowned photographers in the world from Henri Cartier Bresson, Mary Ellen
Mark and Mark Riboud , Eduard Boubat , Bruno Barbey.

February 2010: Prix PICTET “Earth” (February 9 – March 5, 2010)

The Prix PICTET Photography exhibition, sponsored by the Geneva private bank Pictet & Cie, is the world’s first prize
dedicated to photography and sustainability. The show has a unique mandate – to use the power of photography to
communicate crucial messages to a global audience; and it has a unique goal – art of the highest order, applied to the
immense social and environmental threats of the new millennium. The shortlisted artists will be exhibited at The Empty
Quarter in Dubai.

Fashion Feature

The New Year signifies fresh starts and new looks and the Villa Moda team is here to help guide you on the fashion trends
of 2010 – the must-have items for your wardrobe as well as what to chuck!

What’s HOT in 2010:

1. Statement Shoes – a pair of statement shoes can make your whole outfit. Bold colours,
jewels and extra high heels are just some of the styles you’ll be seeing in stores. The key to
wearing statement shoes is to keep the rest of your outfit simple; accessorize with a plain
clutch and let your feet do the talking!

2. Over-the-Knee Boots – arguably the hottest trend of A/W fashion, the thigh-high and
over-the-knee boots is fast becoming a staple in every fashionista’s wardrobe. If you’re
looking for an easy to wear look then genuine leather and suede materials are your best
options, or, for a cozier look, sheerling or wool lining. Pair your boots with short dresses
and skirts or ultra-skinny jeans for on-trend looks.

3. Capes – the more sophisticated ancestor of the poncho is making a comeback.

From high fashion to high street, this outerwear garment was all over the Autumn/
Winter runways. Paired with high heels or flats, the cape looks equally great.

Other Trends for 2010:

• Cocktail dresses; play it safe and avoid dresses that are really short. Instead,
opt for knee length for a chic and elegant look and pay attention to cut and fit.
• Accessories: waistcoats, brooches, bow blouses, ruffles, very tailored jackets,
high waist trousers.
• Pastel shades of all colours for a relaxed, summer look.
• Chiffon

What to DITCH in 2010:

1. Double Denim – the revival of 80’s fashion also brought us one of history’s worst fashion
trends, the double denim look! Avoid wearing denim jackets and matching trousers, which
will only serve to make you look dull and washed out.

2. Winter Wonderland:
Dubai’s winters may be mild, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the A/W trends!
Invest in quality pashminas, which not only keep you warm but also add colour to your
ensemble, and relaxed blazers.
