Materials: Benjamin Franklin biography, graphic organizer
Group 1- (higher group)- 30 min
1. Introduce Story- explain that Benjamin Franklin was an inventor
a. What does it mean to be an inventor?- Remind of vocab examples if needed.
2. Show video on Benjamin Franklin
3. Picture walk story with students.- Review text features
a. Heading, captions, illustration vs. photograph (was vocab last week), maps, timeline
b. Have students find text features throughout
4. Discuss main idea
a. It is squishing the story down into one idea- it is what the story is all about (hand gesture)
b. The main idea of the story is Benjamin Franklin
c. Often we look at headings or titles to help us with main ideas
5. Discuss details- our details are parts of the story to support our main idea
a. Each part of the story supports main idea of the life of Benjamin Franklin
i. Show headings throughout book
6. Have students read entire story- they will read heading, story and captions
a. Vocab to discuss- colony- declaration of independence- printing press (show pic)
7. Re-read in sections
a. Have students discuss main idea- details for each
b. Have students come up with sentences to write and copy
c. I will find a detail and then have students try and find one on their own
8. Have students orally read- The main idea_______. The detail ________ supports the main idea_______.
9. If time do What do you think? at end of story\
Differentiation (lower group)- 45 min

During picture walk explicitly show text features and names

Students will not read captions on the story- I will read and explain the pictures more for support
Students will need extra assistance during reading- it is a harder text
Lead students to find main idea/details together- I will need to form sentences for students to copy
