2nd Prague Workshop

Phase 3 - “Construction of 3D environments”

The main topics of the second workshop/laboratory are the Construction of 3D models and
their integration into 3D multiuser environments, Collaborative experimentation into 3D
interactive multiuser environments, and 2D/3D multimedia creation for mixed 3D multiuser
environments shared on the Internet.

We will set up a temporary Hybrid Laboratory at the Prague College Studios, and we will
create with all participants a one-week evolving Interactive Media Installation following up
the experience initiated by Pascal and Marie Silondi with the “Underground Landscape”
installation presented during the Gamerz 5 festival in November 2009.

Artists, interdisciplinary researchers, IT professionals and students will design, create and
implement first 2D, 3D, 4D models that will be used to build the UCXXI utopian architecture,
prototype of the future UCXXI 3D virtual environment, using mainly 3D modelling tools and
the 3D game engine Unity3D, presented during the Prague evaluation workshop, as well as
audiovisual techniques, programming principles, interfaces to broadcast and interact within
3D interactive multiuser environments.

This second Prague workshop will be directed by Pascal and Marie Silondi and will end the
second phase of research and will offer an experimental and collaborative week, multiplying
audiovisual, interactive and conceptual experiences within 3D multiuser environments.

The workshop is related to Phase 3 of the “Underground city XXI” project.

The action is proposed by Libat and Prague College, and will start Saturday 03.04.2010 and
end Saturday 10.04.2010. It will mainly take place at the Prague College Studios.
The workshop will involve international participants interested in 3D multiuser environment
creation (professionals and students) invited by the co-organizers.
The Grant Agreement
“Phase 2 - Definition of architectural and spatial/urban model of the future 3D environment

The basic virtual city infrastructure will be defined, synthesizing different already realized
studies (Faculty of Mining, Zagreb) and using existing digital data provided by laser measuring
of the ex-coal mine (VIAS, Vienna).
An interdisciplinary European expert team will be established to develop proposals for some
spatial/urban units with streets, squares, parks, buildings, to design fundamental 'public'
buildings like museum, theatre, City Hall, gallery, cultural centre, to propose and integrate
various means of transport such as lifts, railways, cycle and walk tracks, as well as some other
infrastructure, for preparation of the 3D model construction Phase.”

“Phase 3 - Construction of 3D models

3D artists and programmers in a close relationship with architects and designers will create
the first 3D model of the Underground City XXI based on real dimensions and situation of the
ex-coal mine, using advanced CAD techniques and results of the previous mine studies and
measuring. They will collaborate in experimentation and integration of architectural studies,
installations and utopian architecture projects as well as in adaptation of gained
proposals/ideas to be optimally integrated in the future 3D virtual environment.”

Definition of the action

The week is designed as a continuous Laboratory, an Evolving Installation in Interactive
Media where artists, interdisciplinary researchers, IT professionals, and students involved in
3D multiuser environment creation are invited to present, discuss and share ideas,
knowledge/knowhow, and to create 2D, 3D, 4D models that will be implemented into the 3D
multiuser environment using mainly the Unity3D game engine.

It’s experimental time, when all participants will search collaboratively for solutions on how
to build bridges between data streaming, arts and technologies. We will especially focus on
creating multimedia worlds shared and distributed on the Internet, and on creating custom
devices and interfaces to interact within the content of digital worlds using a range of
analogical sensors, video tracking techniques and programming languages.
During the week we will develop an experimental interactive environment using different
systems, protocols and languages like Unity3D, MIDI, programming languages, Artificial
Intelligence principles, audio and video streaming, to identify how the 3D multiuser
environment can be improved by the addition of custom functionalities, entering
progressively, through that discussion, Phase 4 of the UCXXI project, “Development and
implementation of the real-time multi-user platform for delivery of shared interactive 3D
content on the Internet”.

The workshop goals are to create a first interactive 3D model of the UCXXI multiuser
platform, a prototype that will integrate first architectural experimental studies connected to
the ex-coal mine initial model as an Interactive media installation.

The main topics we will explore during the week:

a. Creation of Interactive 3D models: Creation, Integration, Implementation

- 3D modelling

Architects, artists and students will create 3D models for the UCXXI digital environment using
advanced 3D modelling tools. These models will be integrated into a model which contains
the 3D tunnels’ geometry of the ex-coal mine rebuilt and adapted by P.Silondi and J.Grosz
based on data originally provided by VIAS (laser measurement), Inge Schiller (laser
measurement), and Platforma 9.81, (CAD plans).

We will integrate some first 3D UCXXI models proposed by architects, artists, researchers or
students into multiuser environments based on the real dimension and situation of the Labin
ex-coal mine using mainly the Unity3D editor and game engine.

b. Creation of Interactive multimedia content for Interactive 3D environments: Creation of

art works, dynamic principles and integration

- Programming Games, content manipulation and animation principles

- Creation of 2D Graphics.
- Creation of audio content.
- Creation of video content.
c. Distribution of Interactive 3D multimedia environments as multiuser worlds shared on
Internet: Experimentation, creation of art works, integration, and implementation

- Server set up, tests and functionalities

- 3D environment optimization system
- Identification of the limits and potential future improvement

d. Experimentation in mixed environments using sensors, tracking systems and protocols to

interconnect real and digital worlds: Experimentation

- Analogical sensors (gyroscopes, accelerometers, piezo microphones, sonar, etc…)

- NXT Robots
- MIDI protocol
- Visual programming Languages and software
- Video tracking techniques using RGB and InfraRed cameras
- Speech recognition
- Using devices like Joysticks, Gamepad, Wiiremote, smartphones to interact with Digital
content

e. Creation of custom Devices and Interfaces to interact within 3D multimedia

environments: Experimentation

f. Ethics and Cyberspace (seminar and open discussion)

- Moral principles and information technology.

g. The code of Coal (seminar and open discussion).

- Carbon and some of its allotropes: a visual approach
