Traditions find welcome home for holidays

Classic events and several new additions ring in Victorian Holiday weekend
Kate Newton
Unified Newspaper Group

Old-fashioned traditions coexist

with new festivities every year during Stoughtons Victorian Holiday,
and the 23rd year of the annual celebration should be no exception.
Popular events like the horsedrawn carriage rides, Holiday Light
Display and the Festively Illuminated Fire Truck Parade will return,
with additions to the weekends
agenda including a family photo
opportunity with a decorated holiday sleigh from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 5, at the corner of

Division and Main streets, as well as

a Christmas Family Fun Day event
benefiting Martin Luther Christian
School principal and administrator Cynamon Reynolds from 1-5
p.m. Saturday at St. Anns Catholic
School gym, 324 N Harrison St.
Laura Trotter, the Stoughton
Chamber of Commerce visitor services coordinator, said the abundance of outdoor activities this year
will draw in residents and visitors
alike from the moment they enter
downtown.
Regardless of the weather, its
going to be festive all around downtown because instead of having to

find things indoors, just walking into

town youre going to know youre
in a festive atmosphere, she said.
The Stoughton Fire Departments
Holiday Light Display, which started early this year on Nov. 27, features 100,000 lights and will illuminate every evening during Victorian
Holiday at 5:30 p.m. in Stoughton
Rotary Park just east of the first
station at the corner of 6th and Jefferson streets.
The horse-drawn carriage rides, a
Victorian Holiday staple, will depart
from the McFarland State Bank
parking lot, 207 S. Forrest St., from
12:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday. Rides are

$5 per person/$20 per family.

The Festively Illuminated Fire
Truck Parade will follow, featuring
trucks decked out in lights and holiday decorations, departing Wal-Mart
parking lot at 5:30 p.m. and continuing down Main Street to the fire
station, where the public can gather
for hot cider, homemade cookies,
holiday music performed by the city
band and a visit from Santa.
Participants can get a respite
from the cold with plenty of indoor
events, as well. The weekend kicks
off with the annual Love Light ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec.
3 at the Bryant Center at the Stoughton Hospital, 900 Ridge St.
On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,

Holiday Tour of Homes canceled, plans for return in 2016

Victorian Holiday weekend usually offers the public
the opportunity to tour a few
homes in Stoughton that are
decked out and lit up for the
season while supporting a
local cause.
This year, however, people

looking for holiday inspiration may need to drive around

the neighborhood and see
what they can find for a selfguided tour.
The Holiday Tour of
Homes, which had been
presented annually by the

American Cancer Society

Relay For Life of Stoughton/
Oregon/McFarland as a fundraiser, has been canceled this
year.
Amy Ketterer, an ACS
volunteer, said that all of the
homes that were lined up for

2015 backed out on short

notice.
But the event is not gone
forever. Ketterer said there
are already three homes lined
up for the tour in 2016.

StageWorks Projects
returns with two performances of the Nutcracker
Ballet the first Saturday
in December at part of the
citys Victorian Holiday
weekend.
StageWorks Projects
Nutcracker is a perennial
holiday favorite in its 21st
year in Stoughton.
All our productions
are a labor of love, said
StageWorks board president Dave Gasner. The
Nutcracker is one we hold
especially dear. Its a magical, classic story and an
opportunity for dancers to
connect with children during an enchanted time of
year.
StageWorks is proud to
provide an opportunity for
gifted area dancers to perform roles that they would
not have a chance to do in
other companies that bring
in established professionals to fill the main roles,
artistic director Coleen
Kehl said. Dancers are
drawn from throughout
Dane County and beyond
and include many in preprofessional programs.
The dancers we use

the Nutcracker ballet, which is generally held on alternate years.

bring a delightful freshness

to the roles they dance,
Kehl explained. Their
professionalism and talent makes them a joy to
watch.
The production showcases lavish costumes of
velvet and other luxurious
fabrics in rich, jewel tones.
Kehl said StageWorks
has invested between
$50,000 and $75,000 in
the costumes used for the
show, including tutus from

Grishko, a dancewear company that provides tutus for

the famed Bolshoi Ballet in
Moscow.
The StageWorks version of the Nutcracker
also features an alternative
treatment of Mother Ginger
and her Bon Bons.
Renamed Mother Lena
and her Krumkake (Norwegian cookies), (the characters) are a fun tribute to
Stoughtons strong Norwegian heritage, Kehl said.

The staging of the ballet keeps the running time

to about 90 minutes, short
enough for small children
to stay engaged.
The ballet is staged every
other year in rotation with
a StageWorks original ballet version of A Christmas
Carol.
Kehl explained that after
performing the Nutcracker
for 20 years, StageWorks
was looking for a new
challenge, but didnt want
to abandon a ballet that
audiences love so much.
Alternating the two ballets
was the perfect solution,
she said.
Tickets are $14 for both
children and adults and are
usually available up to the
day of performance. There
are two performances, 1:30
p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Stoughton High School Auditorium. Tickets are available
by calling Stoughton Center for the Performing Arts
at 873-0717, at stoughtonperformingarts.com, or at
the door.

Family Fun Day is Saturday

Those looking to participate in holiday-themed activities can support a local

teacher at the same time.
A Christmas Family Fun Day event
will be held at St. Anns gym from 1-5
p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, with all donations
going toward the family of Cynamon
Reynolds.
Reynolds, a preschool teacher and
principal of Martin Luther Christian
School, was severely injured in a car
accident in October. She suffered multiple fractures of her legs, left hip, pelvis,
neck and arm, internal bleeding and a
blood clot in her lung that has required
several surgeries, with more to come.
Rachel Langenohl, vice president
of Kids-4-Kids charity organizing the
event, said they are asking people to
donate to help offset medical bills for the
family. She said MLCS has offered to
match up to $7,000 raised at the event.

A Blessed Holiday Season!

The Dickens of a Run/

Walk returns this year to kick
off the final morning of the
Victorian Holiday weekend.
Organizer Deb Piper said
that with no changes for the
race this year, the key factor
to its success is the weather.
We had probably about
115 (participants) last year. It
fluctuates, she said, recalling
more than 200 people turning
out a couple of years ago on a
beautiful day.
The race, now in its seventh
year, includes both a 5K run/
walk and a 1-mile run/walk
event through downtown
Stoughton.
Its a way to get outside
and enjoy the neighborhoods
and come back to the (Yahara
River Grocery Co-op) and
get some warm coffee, Piper
said.
