End-Of-Life Care In
Tuxes And Gowns For New 007 Spectre
Premiere: And Thats Just The Royals Britain Best In The World
A STUDY showed last month that Endof-life care in the UK has been ranked as
the best in the world with a study praising the quality and availability of services.
The National Health Service hospice
movement was said to provide care that
was second to none.
The study of 80 countries said thanks
to the NHS and hospice movement the
care provided was second to none.
The report by the Economist Intelligence Unit also praised progress made
in some of the poorest countries.
However, rich nations tended to
perform the best with Australia and

New Zealand ranked second and third

respectively. The US came in ninth.
AFFORDABILITY
Affordability of care in the UK received top marks, as would have been
expected for a system that provided
service free at the point of need. But,
it was emphasised that this should not
take away from the UKs quality of care
perfect score.
Overall it was given 93.9 out of 100,
but the report still said there was room
for improvement as there was with all
the top-performing nations.

RRConsumer Prices Fall Due

To Cheaper Food, Fuel
BRITAINS consumer prices fell 0.1
percent in the year through September
due to a drop in the cost of motor fuel
and a smaller than usual rise in clothing costs.
The Office for National Statistics says
pricing wars between supermarkets have
helped push down inflation. The inflation
rate had been at zero for most of 2015.
Low inflation means the Bank of
England is facing little pressure to raise
its main interest rate, which remains at
a record low of 0.5 percent.

RRBritains High Court Rules

That Uber App Is Lawful

BRITAINS High Court ruled last

month that the Uber app to hail minicabs is lawful a blow to Londons
famous black cab drivers, who argued
that it violated city regulations.
The courts decision came after Londons transport authority sought clarification as to whether the San Franciscobased companys app worked in the
same way as meters used by the
strictly regulated black cabs.
The Licensed Taxi Drivers Association argued the app which records
a cars location and travel time and
feeds it back to servers in California
worked like a meter. But Justice
Duncan Ouseley disagreed, ruling that
the app relies on GPS signals and did
not operate in the same way.
The association said it would appeal.
Transport for London said it would
ensure regulatory requirements were
met and said it would gauge public
opinion on a range of potential changes
to the rules for private hire vehicles,
including stricter rules on insurance
and English language skills.
Uber has come under fire in several
European countries, including France,
Italy and Spain.

FIVE BRITONS who died when a

whale-watching boat sank off the coast
of Vancouver Island, western Canada,
have been named.
David Thomas, 50, and his son Stephen, 17, from Swindon were among
those who died. Stephens mother,
Julie, was rescued from Leviathan II.
Also named among the dead are Nigel Hooker, 63, of Southampton, Jack
Slater, 76, who was born in Salford but
had lived in Canada for many years and
29-year-old Katie Taylor.
An Australian passenger was still

Stephen Thomas was Down Syndrome and described as a very tal-

Canadian government investigators are investigating the cause of the
accident.

The boat made a mayday call late
afternoon October 25 on a calm, clear

Odd Pub Names

Meanings
ITS BEEN a while since what was
called a renaissance of changing
pub names, that brought about establishments such as The Slug and
Lettuce, Rat & Parrot, and the Dog

many in the UK.
A solid argument being that not only the pubs
name was changing, but clues to the historical links
of the surrounding neighbourhoods were disappearing with them.
Examples being The Carters Arms suggest the
local man who owned a cart lived there or in the
vicinity. The Church is self explanatory, etc.

KFC Employee Fired For
Refusing To Remove Poppy

STEPHEN COLQUHOUN, 23, was fired from

his job at Kentucky Fried Chicken for refusing to remove a poppy he was wearing on
his uniform.
Colquhoun, a father, had previously made
a donation to the restaurants poppy box and
attached the flower to his shirt but was told
to remove it. His manager cited the health
and safety risk it may cause.
Colquhoun, from Drumchapel, Glasgow,
refused to take off the remembrance symbol
and claims he was dismissed from the KFC
branch in the citys Renfield Street.
At first I thought he must be joking, but
he kept on demanding I take it off. Eventually
I told him hed need to sack me because I
wasnt taking it off. Colquhoun said.
His name was then removed from the
rota, but Colquhoun said he also quit the
job, giving a few shifts notice.
A spokesman for the fast food KFC said:
The poppy appeal is a great cause and
many of our restaurants support it through
donation boxes including the Renfield Street
restaurant. Wearing any type of badge or pin
while working in a kitchen poses a foreign
body risk so isnt allowed for health and
safety reasons. The team member has not

reason for that and you need a bonafide

strategy to secure that first win. . . . chest!
So, if you see yourself venturing back into
this smashing world of conkers, here are
some tips most of them illegal!
Stick it in the oven at a low heat, and your
conker will become less likely to crack under
pressure. 10 minutes or so should do the
trick, and make sure that the outside doesnt
begin to wrinkle.
Soaking or boiling your conker in vinegar
or salt water; soaking in paraffin (kerosene);
coating them with clear nail-varnish; filling them with glue or simply storing them
in the dark for a year (the shrivelled ones
often seem to get the better of the young
shiny ones).
Another favourite cheat: is, surprisingly
the one described by two-times World Conker Champion Charlie Bray who says, There
are many underhanded ways of making your
conker harder. The best is to pass it through
a pig. The conker will harden by soaking in
its stomach juices. Then you search through
the pig-poo for your prized conker.
The last trick, not surprisingly caused a
big stink at the last World Conker Championships only joking!

The man was found bleeding by prison

Paramedics rushed to the facility to treat
the prisoner before taking him to hospital.
A spokesman said: A prisoner from HMP

the offender was taken to hospital for further
treatment.
The South Western Ambulance Service

were called to the prison with reports of a

bleeding.
There was a similar incident at the same
facility in 2007 when a convict cut off his

He suffered deep laceration wounds
before being found by wardens.
HMP Bristol holds mainly adult males and

Thief Held By Cheek Of Co-op

Worker After Attempting To
Steal Beer

A YOUNG beer thief was caught and then held

in a very unorthodox way by a Co-op worker
last month . . . he sat on the young criminal.
The incident has been described as probably not the most bizarre scenes to have ever
unfolded at a Co-op, but its up there.
Shoppers entering the convenience store
in Stroud last month were amazed to see the
worker sitting atop the teenager.
The 15-year-old was attempting to steal
booze when he was caught, taken to the
ground and sat on by the shop assistant,
with his rear end in the young thiefs face.
Witnesses Manford Ruaz, 40, said: I
walked in and saw what had happened. It was
really weird. I walked through the doors and
there was this big bloke sat on this kid with
his butt on his face. I have definitely never
seen anything like it before. It was a shock.
The staff member sat, quite casually,
with arms folded, on top of the offender.
The amazing picture was even posted to a
Facebook group.
The young thief was apprehended on his
third visit within hours, stealing products on
each trip. The teenager was made to pay
for the goods and has been banned from
the store.

Aldi Cracker Package Spells
Upset For Customers

A FLOUR AND water Pilot cracker, saved

by a witness of the Titanic sinking, brought
15,000 at auction last month.
The cracker, made by Spillers and Bakers,
was part of a survival kit on one of the liners
lifeboats when Titanic sank in 1912 with the
loss of more than 1500 lives.
It was found and saved by a passenger
from the steamship Carpathia, which picked
up 705 survivors from lifeboats. The biscuit
has been in its original envelope since.
The auction held on October 24 at Henry
Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, was expected to fetch between 8,000
and 10,000 for the biscuit.
Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: Its the
worlds most valuable biscuit. We dont know
which lifeboat it came from but there are no
other Titanic lifeboat biscuits in existence to
my knowledge.
It is incredible that it has survived such
a dramatic event.

turned out to have a very embarrassing flaw.
Aldi acted quickly and amended the
packaging on the luxury brand of crackers
after they appeared to spell out the C-word.
Facebook user, and customer, Tom
Coulton on Aldis Facebook page, drew
attention to the unfortunate oversight. Dear
Aldi, I was just curious about your choice
of letter capitalisation on the packaging of
your rosemary gourmet crackers, he wrote.
I took especial interest in those capitalised letters on the word CoUNTry. Any
particular reason for this design?
Sara, on Twitter, also pointed out the
problem. The company replied: Thanks for
the feedback, well be sure to pass it on!
An Aldi spokesman said: Our crackers
have been available in completely new packaging and only a limited number of these old
packs remain in-store.
This is the second time in recent months
that an advert or product has managed to
slip in the C-bomb, apparently without the
designers realising.
A new poster for The Hunger Games:
Mockingjay part 2 film was deleted from
Twitter last month after the C-word inadvertently appeared across Jennifer Lawrences
face.

Underworld Of Plastic Bag

Thievery Being Tagged By
Tesco Store
PLASTIC BAGS became an instant commodity last month, causing some customers to
avoid the 5p or 10p charge by stealing their
bag from a rack. The thieving caused Tesco
to begin protecting the bags with security
tags, similar to the method used in clothing
stores.
The store, in Surrey Quays, London, fitted the tags to a whole rack of their slightly
thicker, 10p plastic bags by their self-service
machines.
The 5p charge for plastic carrier bags was
introduced in England last month. Leading
up to the introduction Supermarket managers were said to be bracing themselves for
chaos and shop assistants were allegedly
undergoing training to deal with argumentative customers.
Peter Young, 29, an officer in the Merchant Navy said: I couldnt believe it when
I got to the service counter and saw the bags
with tags on. I thought at first it might be a
joke but then when Tesco confirmed it was
due to thefts I was gobsmacked.
Surely there is a better use of the staffs
time and resources than trying to stop 10p
bags being stolen. Presumably the time it
takes to repeatedly tag and then untag these
bags is more than the 10p anyway.
A Tesco spokesperson said: Weve been
doing everything we can to help customers
minimise the impact of the bag levy charge
and were really pleased with how our customers have responded.
They then conceded: This incident was a
mistake, security tags should not be placed
on this product.
The aim of the scheme is to prevent plastic
bags ending up as litter or marine pollution.
A similar scheme in Wales has seen bags
handed out by retailers fall by 79 percent
over three years.

Move On Up
THE BOOMING London property market is
full of good stories usually about ridiculous prices paid for tiny plots or garages so
bargain basement tales are hard to come
by. However, right now in the very smart
Eaton Square, Belgravia, home to film stars,
aristocracy and royalty, there is a fantastic
five bedroomed apartment in one of the wonderful Regency terraces for just 500,000
($760,000). The usual market price for
a property like this would be in excess of
10m ($15m). So whats the catch? Well,
quite a big one actually the asking price
will give you a right to live in the apartment
for just over three years! Under the UKs
bizarre leasehold laws, this property will
revert to the freeholder, Grosvenor Estate in
early 2019. It is possible that the lease could
be extended by negotiation and no doubt
further payment otherwise, it would work
out as effectively a rental agreement at around
12,000 ($18,000) per month which astonishingly is quite cheap for a 3,391 square
foot property in prime Belgravia!

Democracy At A Price!

The Palace of Westminster, home to both

the House of Commons and the House of
Lords is crumbling. The Grade I listed property and World Heritage Site since 1987 was
built in the 1840s and has not had any major
overhaul since the end of the Second World
War. It is probably the most iconic building in
London but the beautiful limestone exterior is

around 2,000 staff and if they try to work

around the repairs, it is estimated that the
cost will rocket to 7bn ($10.6bn) and take
an incredible 32 years to complete! County

to Birmingham or Manchester. At this point
no firm decision has been made but Londons
crown as the most visited city in the world
with some of the most iconic buildings does
not come cheap.

Planes, Trains And

Automobiles

Fresh from his general election victory

earlier this year, David Cameron has another
major decision on his hands what to do
about the future of Londons airports. The
Prime Minister has promised a decision by
the end of the year but governments have
already prevaricated about this for 50 years
through fearing punishment at the ballot box
if they get it wrong. The 25m ($37.8m)
independent enquiry, chaired by Sir Howard
Davies came down heavily in favour of building another runway at Heathrow, citing clear
economic benefits. But there are plenty of
reasons why Mr Cameron may decide on
expansion at Gatwick, not least that Heathrow
expansion will mean closure and diversion of
the London orbital M25 motorway and around
700 more flights a day over central and west
London not to mention a revolt from within
his own party, led by MP and likely London
Mayoral candidate, Zac Goldsmith. Watch
this space.

they are on time and on budget to open the
new West to East rail connection across the
capital in phases from 2017 onwards. The
project is now 67 percent complete and
includes the construction of 10 new stations.
The myriad of tunnels, tube train lines and
drainage underneath the capital, which obviously need to be avoided, make this project
truly one of the engineering marvels of our
age. 98 percent of the excavated material
is being used on environmental projects,
principally the Wallasea Island Wild Coast
Project in Essex which aims to build a range
of coastal marshes and lagoons.
Sitting in seemingly endless traffic jams in
the UK capital, it is easy to think that the car
is most definitely not king. But this is not true
in one small corner of Hayes, West London,
home to the London Motor Museum. A recent
discovery by your columnist, this fantastic
museum houses one of the largest collections of classic and custom cars in Europe.

the movies includes the Batmobiles from the

But the crumbling stone is only part of
the problem. Inside, very little has changed,
many of the 3,000 windows in the astonishing 1,100 rooms within the complex dont
open or close properly and the building is
riddled with asbestos and infested by moths,
mice and rats.
The repair estimates are eye-watering at
between 3bn ($4.5bn) and 4bn ($6bn)!
Then there is the problem of how to operate
the home of democracy whilst the work is

Big Ben To Fall Silent

While Under Repair

The holy book, known for nearly 400

years as the Sinners Bible, gets one of
the Ten Commandments wrong.
Instead of warning Thou shalt not
commit adultery, the Seventh Commandment omits not and reads Thou shalt
commit adultery.
The mistake was not spotted for a
year after 1,000 copies of the Bible were
printed in 1631.
Furious King Charles 1 ordered that
they should all be burned but a few escaped the recall.
Amid the uproar, the Archbishop of
Canterbury wrote: I knew the tyme
when great care was had about printing,
the Bibles especially, good compositors
and the best correctors were gotten
being grave and learned men.
GENUINE
It is not now known whether publishers Robert Barker and Martin Lucas,
the royal printers, made a genuine error
or if it was a mischievous act by a business rival.
Simon Roberts, from Bonhams books
and manuscript department, said: There
are a few theories about how the error
made it into print.
It may have been a simple slip up
but others think it was a plot to sabotage
Barkers reputation.
Barker and Lucas were stripped of
their printing licence and fined 300,
more than 30,000 in todays money.
After the error things only got worse
for Barker.
In 1635 he was imprisoned for racking up huge debts and died behind bars
in 1645.
Only nine copies of his controversial
bible, also known as the Wicked Bible,
exist today.
The volume being sold is tipped to
fetch 15,000 when it goes under the
hammer on November 11 at Bonhams
in London.

PROTESTERS VOICE HUMAN RIGHTS AND JOBS

Chinese President
Given Royal
Treatment At Palace
CHINESE PRESIDENT Xi
Jinping arrived at Buckingham Palace in style in a
gilded carriage drawn by
white horses last month.
The royal coach drove up the wide
thoroughfare of the Mall, which was lined
with British and Chinese flags, and by
hundreds of well-wishers and counterprotesters October 20.
Demonstrators from human rights and
pro-Tibet groups jostled with Xi wellwishers, who far outnumbered them and
whose chants of China! China drowned
out their rivals.
Talon Li, a Chinese finance student
at Greenwich University, said he had
arrived at 5:30am with some classmates
to welcome Xi and support closer ties
between the two countries.
Its great, he said. UK and China
will really help each other. They should
stay friends. Every British and Chinese
person can be friends.
TOUR
The Queen took the Chinese president and his wife on a tour of the Royal
Collection in Buckingham Palace, including a display of items relating to China.
Earlier, Prince Charles and Xi held
a private meeting where reporters
were denied access. The occasion was
somewhat diplomatically sensitive:
Charles, the heir to the throne, hasnt had
smooth relations with Chinese leaders
in the past. He has met the Dalai Lama
a number of times over the years, and
in 1999 he was accused of boycotting a
Chinese state visit to the UK by failing to
attend a banquet held for then-President
Jiang Zemin.
Charles didnt attending the state
banquet in Buckingham Palace later in
the day. Royal officials say it wasnt a
snub and that Charles was focusing on

private talks with Xi.

Only minutes after Chinese President
Xi Jinping was received with pomp and
pageantry at Buckingham Palace, lawmakers questioned Britains relations
with China in an urgent parliamentary
session called after new British steel job
losses were blamed on cheap Chinese
imports.
Opposition lawmaker Kevin Brennan
questioned how the British government
could secure the future of his countrys
steel industry in the face of China selling
steel at a loss on world markets, including Britain.
Tata Steel announced October 20 it
was cutting 1,200 jobs in the UK, blaming
the layoffs on Chinese imports.
Trade associations want Prime Minister David Cameron to press the Chinese
president on steel dumping and fears
about further job losses.

Counter-Terror Police
Blames Social Media

BRITAINS senior counter-terrorism

police official has warned that some social
media companies undercut efforts to
thwart plots by tipping off suspects about
police inquiries.
Mark Rowley said last month that
some suspects have been told when police request their communications data.
He said some companies refuse to
provide data to police when legitimate
requests are made.
Rowley asserted that as a result there
are more blind spots than ever before,
making it more difficult for police to track
potential extremists.
He told the Royal United Services
Institute that some social media companies are cooperative but others have
intentionally designed their products
so that they will not be able to provide
information to authorities.

POSSIBLE FLOGGING OF
BRIT PENSIONER LINKED

Britain Scraps
$9m Prison Deal
With Saudi Arabia
THE government last month pulled out
of a 5.9m deal to sell prison expertise to
Saudi Arabia that had drawn opposition
from rights groups and senior politicians.
Prime Minister David Camerons office
said Britain had withdrawn its bid for the
training contract after reviewing Ministry
of Justice priorities. The decision also
came in the wake of Cameron writing to
Saudi authorities about the very concerning case of a British man sentenced to
350 lashes for possessing alcohol.
Former oil-industry worker Karl Andree, 74, served a year in prison after being
caught with homemade wine could face a
public flogging. His son, Simon Andree,
said his father was frail and might not survive the punishment and asked Cameron
to personally intervene.
Andree was expected to be released.
Human rights groups are pressing
British authorities to take a tougher line
with the conservative Sunni Muslim
kingdom, a major strategic and trading
partner and the worlds biggest buyer of
British weapons.
OPPOSED
The prisons deal was strongly opposed
by opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy
Corbyn, who said the government had
been shamed into a U-turn on this terrible contract.
We should be sending a strong message to repressive regimes that the US is
a beacon for human rights and that this
contract bid is unacceptable in the 21st
century, Corbyn said.
Justice Secretary Michael Gove has
also expressed reservations about the deal,
and recently shut down Justice Solutions
International, a government-run commercial body that sold prison expertise
to countries including China, Pakistan,
Libya and Nigeria.
Gove told lawmakers in the House of
Commons that British officials had submitted a final bid for the Saudi contract in
April but had since reviewed this issue
further and decided to withdraw our bid.

Boris Takes Tumble

During Tug-of-War

Johnson
definitely
not holding
back!
LONDON Mayor Boris Johnson took a tumble last month as he took part
in a tug of war contest at an event to launch London Poppy Day 2015.
Johnson was pulling a rope as part of the team contest, which took place
beside Tower Bridge. Dressed in a suit and tie, he fell to the grass, before
getting to his feet just as the battle ended. And its not the first time
Johnson has found a sporting event challenging earlier in the month,
he knocked over a 10-year-old boy during a game of rugby in Japan.

Five Britons Killed In WhaleWatching Boat Off Canada Named

Continued from page 1
British Columbia. Jamie Bray, the owner
of the company that operates the boat,
said he is cooperating with investigators
to determine what happened but they
dont know the cause. The companys
director of operations, Corene Inouye,
said it happened so quickly the crew
didnt have an opportunity to send out a
mayday. The crew used flares from the
water which attracted the attention of
local aboriginal fishermen.
Bray said the boat sank in an area it
goes to every day and said they are all
traumatized and in disbelief.
This vessel has operated for 20 years
with an absolutely perfect safety record.
This is something just totally out of the
blue, Bray said. We just dont understand and we wont know the answers
until the Transportation Safety Board
finishes their investigations.
He said life jackets are not worn on

ships that have enclosed compartments

in the event of a sinking because it would
be very difficult to exit a vessel when you
are being held up onto the ceiling with a
life jacket on. On larger vessels were
not required to have the passengers wear
the life jackets. On smaller open boats
they are, he said.
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond confirmed in a statement that the
five killed were UK nationals. He said
consular officials in British Columbia
were supporting family members of
those who died.
It wasnt the first fatal accident on the
whale watching companys record. In
1998 one of its vessels capsized during
an excursion, sending all four people on
board into the water. The operator and a
passenger died. Bray said that vessel was
struck by a rogue wave and this incident
is completely different because it was a
much larger boat.

their husbands misled judges about their

The ruling, October 14, involves
the cases of Alison Sharland, 48, from

former spouses misled judges during

Going Home For The Holidays?

Make Sure Your Visa Is In Order
AS WE GET closer to the holiday
season, many expats living in the
United States will be travelling home
for the panto. If you are one of them,
it is important to make sure you have
the correct documents in place before
starting on your travels. Depending on
your situation, this can mean planning
ahead and making appointments with
Embassies or even pre-submitting
documents for review.

One of the key things to take note of before

you go is that nonimmigrant status and
visa status is not the same thing. A visa
is put in your passport at a US embassy or
consulate abroad that allows you to travel
to a port of entry (such as an airport) in the
US and request admission. A visa is only
for the purpose of entering the US, not for
the purpose of staying in the country! Your
lawful status is the classification and duration
of authorized stay within that classification.
That is, your status in the US is valid up to the
expiration date stated on your I-94 (I-94s are
now automated and travelers are no longer
given paper I-94s at the time of entry. You
can look up your I-94 online with the US
Customs and Border Protection), so long as
you do not do anything to violate your status
Because a visa is used for the purpose
of seeking admission to the US, it does not
have to remain valid while you are in the US
Once you have entered the US on a visa,
your I-94 is what determines the duration of
your stay in a particular classification. This
means that you could have a B-1 visa that is
valid for 10 years, but it does not mean that
you can stay in the US consecutively for 10
years. When you enter the US on the B-1 visa
your I-94 will indicate how long you can stay
in the country.
For example, while already in the US
studying in F-1 (student) status, you a pplied
to change your status from F-1t o H-1B
(specialty occupation worker). At the time
your H-1B was approved, you likely received
an approval notice which has the new I-94
attached at the bottom indicating the validity
period. Having this approved change of status
does not mean that you have an H-1B visa;
you are in the US in H-1B status and as
long as you maintain your status and do not
do anything to violate the status, you can
remain in H-1B status for the duration of the
stay indicated on the I-94. However, the first
time you leave the US, you will generally need
to go to the US embassy or consulate in your
home country to get an H-1B visa before
you can re-enter the US So dont assume
that because your current I-94 is valid for
another year, youll be able to re-enter the US
without a valid visa. With some exceptions
you generally get a new I-94 each time you
enter the US Also, do not think that because
you were able to leave the US, you will be
able to get back in.
The process of getting a visa varies by US
embassy or consulate so it is best to check
the individual locations procedures. Generally, you will need to submit a DS-160 form
online, pay the visa fee, make an appointment online and then attend the interview.
Depending on the type of visa you need,
the procedures and required documents will
differ. For some types of visas such as an E
visa, embassies and consulates require that
you pre-submit documents and go through an
initial review before you can even make your
appointment so it can be a lengthy process.
Many embassies and consulates do not
accept visa applications from third country
nationals. This means that if you are a British
national, you may not be able to get your visa
in Australia for example; you will need to go
to the embassy in London.
Another thing to keep in mind is that many
embassies and consulates get busy during

Page 5

ujnews.com

the holidays as it is peak travel time so make

sure to book your appointment early to be
sure that you can get the date within your
anticipated travel time. Also remember that
after you attend your interview, assuming that
all goes well, it will take a few days before
you can get your passport with the visa in
it back so make sure to allow for extra time
after your interview.
Once you are back in the US, go online
and look up your new I-94 to be sure of your
new period of authorized stay.
If you are a green card holder, although
you do not need a visa to re-enter, make
sure that you have your green card and that
it is still valid during your travel times. If your
card will expire while abroad you will need
to take steps to ensure that you renew it and
otherwise determine that you dont have any
issues returning to the US

that it was not on the cards today.
The financial press put the value of the

Though the judge in her case recognised her husbands evidence had been

Gerry Adams, 6 Others To Avoid

Charges Over 1972 IRA Killing
NORTHERN IRELAND prosecutors say Sinn Fein party leader Gerry Adams
and six other suspected IRA veterans will face no charges over the outlawed
groups 1972 abduction, slaying and secret burial of a Belfast mother.
The 66-year-old Adams was arrested last year on suspicion of involvement in the disappearance of Jean McConville. The Irish Republican Army
killed the 38-year-old for allegedly spying for British forces. Detectives freed
Adams without charge after four days of questioning, but sent an evidence
file to prosecutors for their assessment.
Northern Irelands deputy director of public prosecutions, Pamela
Atchison, announced last month that Adams and six others arrested in
the McConville probe would face no charges. Atchison said evidence was
insufficient to provide a reasonable prospect of obtaining a conviction
against any of them.

The procedures described above are general

procedures and there are many exceptions, so be
sure to consult with an attorney to make sure you
will be able to re-enter the US as you come back
from holiday. I can be reached at (619) 235-5400
or through my web page at www.urelaw.com.

a substantially different order.

By the husbands fraud and the
judges order, she had been deprived of
her right to a full and fair hearing of her
claims, Supreme Court Justice Brenda
Hale said.
Gohil had accepted 270,000 and a car.
Her husband was convicted of moneylaundering following their divorce.
Graham Coy, a partner at law firm
Mundays, suggested the ruling may
open the floodgates for people to
renegotiate historic settlements where
a party misleads the court.
It just goes to show that if you dont
put all your cards on the table when
divorcing it might come back to bite you
further down the line, he said.

Smoking In Cars With

Children Inside Banned
DRIVERS and smokers who light up in a
car with children under 18 inside will face
a 50 fine. Drivers face the same penalty
even if they are not smoking.
The ban took effect October 1 for
England and Wales.
Police officials say they will take an
educational, non-confrontational approach as the ban is introduced.
Health officials believe the prohibition
will help protect young children from the
effects of second-hand smoke.
The law applies even if vehicle windows or a sunroof are open. It does not
apply to a convertible if the top is down
and properly stowed.

Another Small Victory

In Plastic Bag War
AT THE beginning October, England
caught up. Large retailers were
required to charge 5p for every
plastic bag they hand out.
The rest of the UK has been doing this for a
number of years with the result that there has
been a drop in carrier bag use of between 70
and 90 percent. Apparently in Britain last year
we got through 8.5 billion single-use plastic
bags, about 150 bags for each and every one
of us. That seems a lot but it comes down to
three bags a week, a perfectly credible total
for the average weeks shopping.
There are exemptions. For a start the
legislation only applies to retailers with more
than 250 employees across the country. The
Government has kindly offered the arithmetic
to show you how to work this out. You simply
add up all the hours worked in a years by all
your employees and then divide by 2080. If
the answer is higher than 250, you charge
5p for carrier bags. You may be interested
to know what 2080 is all about. Well, its
a years-worth of work on the basis of a
40-hour week.
But there are also exceptions. If the bags
plastic is more than 40 microns thick, you
can obviously use it twice so it wont cost
Joe Public 5p. It will, if course, cost at least
twice that because its officially a Bag for Life
or will be until its microns wear out when it
will be exchanged.
UNCOOKED
And it also depends on what you are sticking into the bag. Uncooked fish or meat earns
a free bag, as do loose seeds and unwrapped
blades. Pet shops are similarly released
from charging if they dispense live goldfish
in a plastic bag. However, if you include a
box of cornflakes with any of the preceding
commodities, then the 5p charge will apply.
The money raised will go to good causes,
as it does in Wales. On the face of it, this
could amount to quite a little fortune. If you
are getting through 150 bags a year, that
adds up to seven quid a year, or 300m for
charity but of course that will shrink to about
50m once people start bringing their own
bags (again!).
Early reaction to the imposition of a charge
on bags was generally mild. Very British, I
suppose.
SCENE
One Aldi customer in Wolverhampton
caused a bit of a scene. He piled all his
goods back into the shopping basket and set
off for his car. Security were called and the
customer returned to the check-out where
he explained that he was using the basket to
carry his goods to his car where he would
stow them in the boot and return the basket
whence it came.
Aldi security had an answer to that. The official simply took each item one at a time and
dropped it on the floor, claimed the basket
and banned the man from shopping in Aldi.
Which reminds me of a joke I heard
recently. Theres an egg and a chicken standing at a check-out with their baskets and the
woman on the the till says, Whos next?
Other shoppers have posted online different solutions to the charge. One man has a
laden shopping trolley photographed in his
living-room: 5p a bag or 50p a trolley?
The facts about plastic bags are probably
the most interesting aspect of the whole

business. Did you

realise, for instance,
that a car could drive
11 miles on the petroleum required to
make one bag?
CRIMINALISED
There are plenty
more where that
came from though.
Plastic bags are
criminalised in
Rwanda of all places, the home of genocide.
Visitors arriving in Kigali Airport will find their
plastic is confiscated, even ripped off your
luggage if youve chosen to seal it that way.
Nowadays, Rwanda has its own black market

for plastic bags if youre interested in earning a few bob on the side. Further down the
continent, in South Africa, the black plastic
bag was so commonly seen blowing in trees,
that it became the unofficial national flower.
In Asia, Bhutan has produced its fair share
of nutty headlines. Way back in1999, the
landlocked kingdom felt that plastic bags

were a genuine obstacle to happiness and

banned them in order to augment their Gross
National Happiness quota. Sadly, the effect
of the legislation was negative and the ban
had to be reintroduced all over again in 2005.
Already, though, you can sense that the
flimsy carrier bag industry is about to drag
in a whole load of red tape as opposed to
polythene bags. Since it is a legal requirement, the majesty of the law is needed to
ensure it is observed. Retailers will face a
fixed penalty of 200 for not charging for
bags, plus another two hundred smackers for
not keeping records AND two hundred more
pounds sterling should they fail to produce
records on request. We, the shoppers, are
entitled to ask for carrier bag records and
the retailers must give us them within 28
days or face fines.
INSPECTOR
Moreover, the local authority is required to
check that shops are obeying the law. They
can send inspectors unannounced to visit
the store, make test purchases as secret
shoppers, speak to staff and demand to see
records. Should they discover malpractice,
the local authority has its own list of fines that
run into the thousands of pounds.
Still, if the growing world-wide clamour
to ban plastic bags is ultimately successful,
surely we can forgive governments for generating such complicated legislation. There
are apparently five oceanic gyres across
the globe. The Pacific Garbage Patch is well
known and the North Atlantic rubbish yard
has been studied since 1972.
In the final analysis, time alone will cleanse
our seas though it will take the best part of
a thousand years to do so. It is quite some
challenge.
The most sobering aspect of the whole
business is that research has shown that the
average operating lifespan of a plastic bag is
... twenty minutes!

Ex-M&S Boss Heads

UK Pro-EU Group,
Says Brexit Too Risky
RR By Jill Lawless

THE FORMER CHIEF executive of retail chain Marks

& Spencer is heading a campaign to persuade Britons
to stay in the European Union, arguing last month that
quitting could leave the country isolated, less secure
and economically weakened.
Stuart Rose said that leaving Europe is a leap into
the dark and I dont believe that is a risk worth taking.
To claim that the patriotic course for Britain is to
retreat, to withdraw and to become inward-looking
is to misunderstand who we are as a nation, Rose
said at a London launch for the Britain Stronger in
Europe group.
The campaign is backed by former Prime Ministers
John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and includes
ex-British Army chief Peter Wall and soccer executive
Karren Brady.
Britain will hold a referendum by the end of 2017 on
whether to leave the 28-nation EU after more than 40
years of membership. Prime Minister David Cameron
says he will argue to stay in as long as he can negotiate
looser ties with the bloc.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

State Tax Can Be

An Issue, Too!
JUST ONE of the interesting differences
between US and UK tax systems is the place
of state income tax. I probably knew more
about US taxes than most people before I
came here rate, generally lower than the
UK; deductions, much more generous than
the UK but I never gave a thought to the
Arizona tax rates and what impact they would
have on my overall tax liability.
Many British people live in high tax-rate
states California, New York and many live
in states with no income tax Florida, Texas,
Nevada and the rest of us live in states that
are somewhere in between! This can make a
considerable difference to your overall liability
and maybe should be a relevant factor when
companies are deciding where to set up in
the United States.
Interestingly, the states have complicated
relationships when it comes to taxes. If you
have income from more than one state,
should you be filing tax returns in both states
and potentially paying tax in both states? And
if you do, will one state give you credit for the
tax youve paid to the second state?
You may think the United States have been
United for quite long enough to have sorted
out these issues but you would be wrong!
Its very much an ongoing issue!
Businesses that operate in more than one
state, often have to do extremely complex
calculations to determine whether and how
much tax they are due to pay in each state.
Given that the tax law in each state is different,
you can imagine how many people are kept
busy doing this work! There are three factors
that are generally taken into account the
property factor (what assets does a business
have in any state), the payroll factor (how
many employees you have in any state and
how much work they are doing there) and the

sales factor (what proportion of your sales are

made in any state). Each state gives different
weight to each factor before determining what
the state tax liability might be.
The next interesting point is that, no, one
state doesnt necessarily give credit for the
state tax paid to another state. In fact, the
instructions to state forms have lists these
states we will give credit for and the others
we wont, and it goes without saying that the
lists are not the same for all states!
Before youve decided that Ive obviously
totally lost it in telling you all about this (who
do I think is reading this the CFO of Amazon?), please keep reading.
There are two points I want to make from
all this.
Firstly, given this background to limiting
credit for state tax paid to other states, it is
less surprising that many states will not give
you credit for foreign tax payments. Some will
not allow it at all, and others only allow it for
certain countries, generally Canada. But this
can be important if foreign tax credit plays a
major part in reducing your federal tax liability,
you need to be aware that it may not have
the same effect on your state tax bill. And you
need to take account of this when making
estimated tax payments as well.
Secondly, and as part of the bigger picture
if you substitute countries for states in the
scenario Ive described, you can understand
how amazing it is that we have so many tax
treaties at all! Only having two parties at a
time must help! And it is not surprising that
they are not renegotiated very often!

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAINS

FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS

THIS MONTH sees the aftermath of the Coronation Street live episode which was aired
for ITVs 60th anniversary. It was certainly
dramatic as Callum, the campest villain that
Corrie has ever had, was murdered by Kylie.
Callums cold body now rests wrapped in
a pirate duvet cover stuffed down Gails
manhole under the Platts garage.
Kylie remains as cool as she can knowing
theres a dead body under the concrete thats
been poured in the room that will become
Gails bedroom. David plots his way out of
things as best as he can but Sarahs hysterical and in danger of turning them all in to the
cops. Gails persuaded to take herself away
to Milan to stay with Uncle Stephen while
David, Kylie and Sarah are at their wits end
wondering how to get out of the mess theyve
made for themselves.
Callums mate Gemma turns up looking for him, shes got nowhere else to go,
no other friends or anyone else, she tells
Kylie. Gemmas grown on me a lot and her
vulnerability in the scene when she turns
up at the Platts makes me wonder if shed
be an asset who could stick around on the
Street. While Gemmas in the house, Kylie
leaves and takes Callums phone with her.
Using Callums phone, she sends a text to
Gemma pretending its from Callum, saying
that hes scared of drug baron Denton and
has gone underground for a bit. Oh yes, hes
underground all right, right under ground.
Then Callums mum arrives looking for her
son and so theres more covering up and
more lies as the three terrified Platts try to
keep it together. But how long can they do
so without Sarah losing the plot?

Elsewhere on the Street, Sallys upset

when Tim wont speak to her after he found
out shed snogged her ex-husband Kevin.
Shes even more put out when she finds
out that Tim has made up with Kevin, but
refuses to have anything to do with her!
She cant understand his actions, doesnt
realise how much shes hurt him and is livid
when she finds out hes moved in with Anna
and is sleeping on her sofa. After moping
on the sofa and shuffling to the shops in
her dressing-gown (Sally! In her dressing
gown! Outdoors!), Rita tells her to pull herself
together. You, lady, take responsibility for
your actions! and take responsibility Sally
does. Well, after a talking-to from Rita, who
wouldnt? Sally determines to marry Tim as
theyd planned, whether he wants to or not.
She quotes a line from Tims favourite film
Field of Dreams, and tells everyone wholl
listen If you build it, he will come. Ill
be there in my wedding dress on Monday,
waiting! she tells Tim, but will Tim turn up?
Roy takes Cathy out on their first date and
the two of them have dinner in the Bistro. After
dinner Roy invites Cathy back to his place for
coffee, just coffee, and Cathy agrees. The
two of them sit quietly in the caf and Roy
listens to the classics while sipping caffeine
with Cathy.
And finally its bad news for Tyrone and Fiz
when they receive news that Hope has been
diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form
of childhood cancer. Its a dreadful disease
and a very sad story. Lets hope Corrie can
do what they do best and temper the sadness
of this storyline with other events on the
Street over the coming weeks in the run-up
to Christmas on the cobbles.

Tony Blair: Iraq War

Contributed To Rise Of IS
RR By Jill Lawless

FORMER British Prime Minister

Tony Blair has acknowledged that the
US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 was
partly responsible for the emergence
of the Islamic State militant group in
the Middle East. But he insists that
toppling Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had been the right thing to do.
Blair told CNN there are elements
of truth in the assertion that the war
in Iraq caused the rise of IS, which
now controls a large swath of Iraq
and Syria.
Of course, you cant say those of
us who removed Saddam in 2003 bear
no responsibility for the situation in
2015, he said in an interview broadcast October 25.
Blair added that the Arab Spring
revolutions, which began in 2011,
had also played a part by allowing the
Islamic fundamentalist militant group

Talk Surrounding
NFL Game In London
About Toilet Paper
MUCH OF the talk surrounding the first
of three regular-season NFL games in
London was hijacked by the news that
the New York Jets flew to England with
their own toilet paper to replicate the
comforts of home.
You would think it would be fine
over here, said Miami Dolphins rookie
running back Jay Ajayi, who was born
in Britain but moved to the US as a
kid. For them to do that, thats pretty
interesting.
The Jets played in London for the first
time, which may explain why they were
taking so much care to ensure the players
feel right at home.
It certainly became a topic of conversation as both teams arrived in London
last month.
I could make a short comment right
there but I decline, Jets coach Todd
Bowles said at the teams practice facility. Im not touching that one.
Regardless of the toilet paper discussion, the game at Wembley Stadium saw
the The New York Jets defeat the Miami
Dolphins there 27-14 October 2
The second scheduled season game
was to be the Buffalo Bills playing the
Jacksonville Jaguars on October 25. Final
of the three NFL games will see Detroit
Lions take on the Kansas City Chiefs
November 1.

to flourish in civil war-torn Syria and

then Iraq. And he said the sectarian
policy of Iraqs Shiite-led government
was also a factor in destabilizing the
country.
FALSE
Blairs decision to take Britain into
the Iraq war based on what turned
out to be false claims about Saddam
Husseins weapons of mass destruction remains hugely divisive at home
and contributed to his Labour Partys
loss of power in 2010.
Blair insisted that removing Saddam was the right thing to do, but
apologized, as he has before, for failures in post-war planning.
I apologize for the fact that the intelligence we received was wrong, he
said. I also apologize for some of the
mistakes in planning and, certainly,
our mistake in our understanding of
what would happen once you removed
the regime.
Some 179 British personnel died in
Iraq between 2003 and 2009. A public
inquiry into decisions and mistakes in
Britains planning and execution of the
war began in 2009 but has yet to issue
its findings. The process has been held
up while people criticized in the report
are given a chance to respond.

Britain To Seize
Passports Of Teens
At Risk Extremism

RR By Danica Kirka

PRIME MINISTER David Cameron

was set to unveil new plans to combat
extremism later last month, expanding
the governments power to seize passports from young people at risk of traveling abroad to join groups like Islamic
State. The measures also include forcing
people convicted of extremist offenses to
be barred from working with children.
The stakes are rising and that demands a new approach, Cameron said.
So we have a choice do we choose
to turn a blind eye or do we choose to
get out there and make the case for our
British values?
While Cameron didnt define what
he considers extremist views, he high
lighted the growing number of young
people who have left home to fight in
Syria, and the recent case of a 15-year-old
convicted of inciting terrorism abroad.
The government has already been able
to seize the passports of those under
16, and that will now apply to 16- and
17-year-olds as well.
MODERATE
An extra 5m will be ploughed into
moderate Muslim groups and charities
this year, Cameron said.
Muslim organizations rejected Camerons One Nation strategy, warning
that it risks alienating Muslims and could
be counter-productive.
The Muslim Council of Britains
secretary general, Shuja Shafi, said the
strategy is based on a fuzzy conception of British values. While the council
supports efforts to fight terrorism, the
government must not suppress freedom
of thought or expression, Shafi said in a
statement.
He said he saw McCarthyist undertones in the proposal for blacklists
against people deemed to be extremist.

Families Of MH17 Victims

Face Long Wait For Answers
THE REV JOHN Mosey has advice
for relatives seeking justice for their
loved ones who died aboard Malaysia
Airlines Flight 17: Dont expect your
quest to carry much weight.
Mosey thought truth would prevail
after he lost his teenage daughter
Helga, who was a passenger on Pan
Am Flight 103 when it exploded over
Lockerbie, Scotland, just before
Christmas in 1988. But as months
turned into years and then into decades, he concluded that geopolitical
realities had trumped his familys
desire to know what really happened.
The British cleric from Lancaster says he thinks the truth about
Lockerbie is still being hidden and
has told families who lost relatives
when MH17 was shot down on July
17, 2014, over eastern Ukraine they
can expect the same. In face-toface informal counseling sessions
at Lockerbie, Mosey has cautioned
MH17 families that the interests
of powerful countries like Russia
and the United States over the area
where the plane was brought down
may well eclipse their desire for the
straight story.

Ode to the Mince-Pye
William Hone, 18th century

I WAS telling some of my British friends

that I have just finished making the Christmas Pudding and Mincemeat for this year
which I usually try to do mid October
to allow for maturing it (and adding more
plonk!) they are always better made well
ahead of time. The conversation turned to
them not liking mincemeat here and that
they didnt bother with it anymore, but one
of the friends stated that they had to try my
version which is very traditional. I never
liked the American version of mincemeat,
and it really is so easy to make, and worth
what effort there is. Mincemeat was originally made with meat in the 16th century,
but more recent years the ingredients call
for beef suet. That is no longer readily
available here, but I have been able to
have success going to the butchers in one
of our local supermarket, and also a lovely

old fashioned German based gourmet shop

here in Sarasota they also carry things
like kidneys, and other offal. I have to ask
for beef fat though, not suet, and for it to
be trimmed so there is less meat on it. In
earlier years I did try using shortening and
/or lard but it just didnt have the final good
flavour. Ask the butcher to mince or grind
it up for you, as it is a nuisance trying to
grate it. I also prefer to buy all my dried fruit
from a health store, so there are no extra
additives, and gives much better taste.
When I make my mince pies, I prefer
to use shortcrust pastry as there is plenty
of fat from the suet, and puff pastry is too
rich. When using it, I bake the pies at 350
degrees for 25-30 minutes. This is from an
old English recipe that we used in the family, and I have successfully made it here
for past 49 years. Many of my American
friends enjoy them also. I hope you like my
version, this also freezes well.

Mincemeat

3 cups grated/minced suet

1 cups sultanas (golden raisins)
3 cups currants
1 cup candied mixed peel
3/4 cup chopped almonds
4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and
chopped finely
1 cup brown sugar
1 lemon, grated rind and juice
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup brandy or rum, or a mix of both
Mix all ingredients well. Store in sealed
container, and add brandy/rum in several
times before using. This really needs to be
made well ahead of time so it marinates
well.
If you prefer not to use alcohol, use orange juice, but be sure to keep refrigerated

suggestions and can be reached at Yourcuppatea1yahoo.com)

Expert Report Finds IRA Exists

But Poses No Threat To Peace
AN EXPERT report into the current
state of the Irish Republican Army
and other outlawed Northern Ireland
groups has found that the IRA still
exists and some members continue to
pursue violence and crime, but as an
organization the group poses no threat
to peacemaking.
Britain and Northern Ireland parties
welcomed last months publication of
the British government-commissioned
report, which weighed evidence provided
by anti-terror police and intelligence
agencies.
Leaders of Northern Irelands British
Protestant majority had demanded the
report as a condition for their continued
cooperation with Sinn Fein, the IRAlinked party that represents Irish Catholics in the territorys unity government.
Last months report backed police assessments that individual IRA members

committed the slaying.

Meanwhile, on October 15 Irelands
leaders and thousands of police are
attending a state funeral for an officer
shot to death by an Irish Republican
Army suspect free on bail, a killing that
has raised questions about arming police
and toughening bail rules.
President Michael D Higgins, Prime
Minister Enda Kenny and police commanders from both parts of Ireland joined
4,000 officers at the funeral of Tony
Golden. Thousands followed the ceremony outside via big-screen televisions.
The 36-year-old Golden was killed as
he tried to protect the female partner
of the IRA suspect as she collected her
belongings from their home in the border
village of Omeath. The man shot both of
them and then himself. Golden and the
gunman both died. The woman remains
in critical condition in a Dublin hospital.

Unemployment Drops To Its

Lowest Level Since Mid-2008
BRITAINS unemployment level fell to
5.4percent in the three months ending in
August, its lowest level since mid-2008.
The Office of National Statistics said
last month there were about 1.8 million
people seeking work, 79,000 fewer than
those from March to May 2015.
Dean Turner, an economist at UBS
Wealth Management, says there was little
slack remaining in the jobs market and that

rising wage pressures will likely prompt

the Bank of England to hike interest rates.
Theres been little pressure lately on the
bank to raise rates because inflation now
at minus 0.1 percent has been low.
But Turner says that tighter monetary
policy is unlikely to derail the UK from
its current growth trajectory as nascent
signs of productivity growth should keep
inflation pressures in check.

Report author Annie Pannelay said:
The UK is an acknowledged leader in
palliative care. That reflects its comprehensive strategy towards the issue as
well as the improvements that are being
made. But there is more that the UK
could do to stay at the forefront of palliative care standards, such as ironing out
occasional problems with communication
or symptom control.

BRITAIN will never in a thousand

years agree to a common European
immigration policy to deal with the surging number of refugees fleeing to the
continent, the Home Secretary declared
last month.
Theresa May, the UKs interior minister, told an audience at the Conservative
Party conference that Britain should
tighten control of its borders, admitting
vulnerable refugees but keeping out
those who simply want a better life.
She said other European countries
should also toughen up their border controls, arguing that in the last few years
more people had applied for asylum in
the EU from Balkan countries which
have not seen war for years than from
war-torn Syria.
She said Europes immigration crisis
can only be resolved by nation states
taking responsibility themselves and
protecting their own national borders.
May said the arrival in Europe of
hundreds of thousands of migrants had
led some people to say we need a new
approach, a new European approach that
would involve a common immigration
and asylum policy.
COMPASSION
To those people, I have a very clear
answer: Not in a thousand years, May
said.
In a tough speech on immigration, May
said Britain would combine hard-headed
common sense with warm-hearted
compassion.
She said its impossible to build a
cohesive society with the high levels

of immigration that Britain has seen in

the past decade. Net migration to the UK
was 330,000 people in the year to March.
May is seen as a potential future Tory
leader, and her speech was aimed at
boosting her support within the party.
Her hard tone differs from that of Prime
Minister David Cameron, who stressed
that Britain needs and benefits from
immigration, as long as it is controlled.

The rankings were calculated following assessments for the quality of the
hospitals and hospice environments,
staffing numbers and skills, affordability
of care and quality of care.
GOOD
Only 34 out of 80 countries provided
what could be classed as good end-of-life
care and these accounted for just 15
percent of the adult population.
The report said the quality of endof-life care was becoming increasingly
important with the ageing population,
meaning people were increasingly facing
drawn-out deaths.
Claire Henry, chief executive of the
National Council for Palliative Care, said:
At its best how the UK cares for people
who are dying is absolutely world class
with hospice care leading the way, but
there can be no room for complacency,
especially as the demand for palliative
care is increasing.
Also in the top 10 this time were the
Irish Republic, France, Germany and
the US.

Family Of Ebola
Nurse Complains
Of Ill Treatment
In Scotland
EBOLA victim, nurse Pauline Cafferkey was said to be in critical condition
last month after being initially treated
in a Glasgow hospital before being
transferred to a specialist unit in .
Cafferkeys family said doctors had
missed a big opportunity to treat her
earlier.
Health teams have now identified 65 close contacts of the Scottish
nurse who is critically ill with Ebola
complications in Royal Free Hospital
in London.
Cafferkey, 39, from Cambuslang in
South Lanarkshire, contracted Ebola
while working at a treatment centre
in Sierra Leone last year.
Doctors said, of the contacts identified, 26 have been given a trial vaccine.
The Scottish nurse spent almost a
month in isolation at the Royal Free
at the beginning of the year after the
virus was detected when she arrived
back in the UK.
She was later discharged after apparently making a full recovery, but it
was discovered last month that Ebola
was still present in her body.
She has since shown signs of recovery.

Tesrod Farmhouse
by Linda Colucci
Madalone

THIS IS the second book by Linda her first

The 440 Train received a very favorable
review from me last year.
Well, shes outdone herself on this one! I
got the book and
once I started it I
had to finish it.
Took me three
days (it wouldnt
have taken that
long but, unfortunately, I had
to go to work in
between!).
Im not sure
how she does it
but I always feel
like Im one of the characters in her books,
they are just so easy to relate to. Victoria
Ladybird is a grief counselor she meets her
husband while visiting one of her patients. It
is love at first sight and true love at that. They
spend a wonderful 20 years together in Dorset,
England. One evening, after their weekly poker
night with friends they go to bed and when she
wakes up in the morning, still wrapped in his
arms, he is gone. Well, being a grief counselor
doesnt mean you can deal any better with the
death of a loved one, let alone three at once.
Victoria completely retreats into her own world
trying to deal with not only the death of Edwin,
her loving husband, but also the death of her
good friend, a local professor and mentor. She
ignores the post, unplugs the phone and shuts
herself in for a couple of weeks. Edwin insisted
on cremation and she agreed only because
she thought the time would never come. Well
it has. Now Edwin sits on the shelf in an urn,
and Lynx, the cat, is her only companion.
Victoria lost her parents when she was very
young and was then raised by her Aunt Emma
and Uncle Buck who had moved to the States
and opened a B&B.
Some time has passed and there are letters
from Emma that lie unopened. Emma decides
its time to get back to life as much as she can
and is about to read the letters when the phone
rings. Its her solicitor Brighton. He insists she
must come to his office right away. She pulls
herself together and heads off. Brighton is not
only her Solicitor but he and his wife are her
friends and poker partners. She arrives only
to find that her beloved Aunt Emma has also
passed away. Brighton has a letter for Emma
to read also which she does. Victoria now
feels guilt for locking herself away for so long,
unplugging the phone, perhaps she could
have spoken to Aunt Emma at least one more
time if she hadnt been so sorry for herself.
Brighton tells her that Emma has left the B&B
to her and that it is in financial trouble. After
much soul searching she decides she must go
to Tesrod and see what she can do to save it.
Aunt Emma loved Tesrod and poured her heart
and soul into it and its employees who
were like family to her. Emma had been to visit
a few times and loved the place. She would go
for a year and it would be a break from hurtful
surroundings and see what she could do.
Off she goes with Lynx to the farmhouse. It
is even lovelier than she remembers she feels
her Aunt and knows she is close by. Victoria
has always had a connection with spirits and
in one of the letters Aunt Emma was sure that
there was an apparition in the house in her
bedroom and hoped Victoria could suss
it out for her. Charles, the butler, welcomes
her with open arms albeit typically British
stiff upper lip ones and helps her settle in
to her Aunts old bedroom. She meets all the
staff each wonderful and unique in their
own ways and she also feels that there is
someone in the room. It is decided that there
will be a special service to bury Emmas ashes
by the old tree where Emmas husband Buck
is buried. The events leading up to the service
are fascinating. The guests that are invited to
stay favorites of Emmas and their ties

Page 9

ujnews.com

to her are all wonderful stories in and of

themselves. Two guests in particular are of
great interest one is a local woman who, for
years, has been booking a room and speaking with Emma, but always cancels at the
last moment. As it happens, when she does
show up she is a Marilyn Monroe lookalike.
Another is Alfred, a Frenchman who is an art
lover. I wont give away the details but suffice to say they are all tied together in a very
interesting way. Who is Dominic and where
does she know him from? How on earth is
she going to hang on to Tesrod and make it
work? All of these people are depending on
her and she has already put all of hers and
Edwins money into just the first months
mortgage payment!
There is buried treasure of a sort to be
found, new friends to be made, and some
real soul searching by many of the guests
and employees and Victoria herself. She
has always had a very strong tie to her faith,
as her Aunt Emma had raised her but she
finds herself relying on those beliefs for
the strength that she will need to carry her
through this journey to the happy ending that
she deserves and needs.
She has a lot of help from those alive and
dead and it is a wonderful journey.
You will find that The 440 Train is tied into
this book also. If you havent read The 440
Train you will still, most certainly, love this
book but it will definitely mean more if you
read it before or after.
Linda is truly a wonderful writer, and, as
youll find, a very spiritual person. Both of
these books landed in my lap at times when
I needed them. It makes one wonder about
things, and appreciate things that we may
not understand.
Pick it up and read it! You wont regret it!
I cant wait for the next one!!

Britain Leads International

Emmy Nominations With 7 Nods
RR By Charles J Gans

BRITAIN garnered a leading seven

International Emmy nominations last
month, led by Sheridan Smith who
received a best actress nod for her role
in Cilla.
Smith, who also has a BAFTA nomination for the same role, starred in the
ITV miniseries about the rise to stardom
of pop singer and TV personality Cilla
Black, who was closely associated with
the Beatles.
The nomination was particularly
poignant because Black died on August
1 after a fall in her Spanish villa. At
the time, Smith tweeted that she was
absolutely devastated over the death
of a true legend and considered it a
privilege to play her.
Smith was previously nominated for
an International Emmy in 2013 for her
role in Mrs Biggs, about the wife of Great
Train Robber Ronnie Biggs.

UK Police Says Witchcraft, Exorcism Cases On Rise

BRITAINS Metropolitan Police have reported an increase in the number of child

abuse cases that involve allegations of witchcraft and exorcism.
Police said last month a specialist unit received 46 such cases in 2014, more
than twice as many as the year before.
The Project Violet unit says 60 incidents have been reported so far this
year, continuing the upward trend.Detective Sergeant Terry Sharpe said the
number of incidents remains small in number but that there has been a
significant increase.
He said in one case a nine-year-old boy was called a devil child and thrown
out of his home by his parents. Another case involved a mother who believed
her son was a witch and tried to bite and smother him.

Ecuador Asks UK To Let

Assange Leave Embassy

ECUADORAN officials have asked

the United Kingdom to let WikiLeaks
founder Julian Assange leave his asylum
at countrys embassy in London briefly
for medical checks. Britain responded
last month by saying he could have
medical care but would be arrested if he
leaves the embassy.
Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino
said that Assange needs an MRI for a
pain in his shoulder that began three
months ago. Assange has been living at
the embassy since June 2012 to avoid
extradition to Sweden, where he faces
allegations of sexual misconduct and rape
of two women. He denies the accusations
and said he believes that Sweden would
send him to the United States to be face
charges for the WikiLeaks publication of
thousands of classified US government
documents.
RETURN
We are asking for a special safe
conduct pass that lasts a few hours only
so he can take a magnetic resonance
and return under our protection, Patino
said, adding, and possibly beneath the
protection of British police, if they want
to put 10,000 police alongside the vehicle
to take him to the hospital.
Britains Foreign Office said in a statement that Britain would not in any way
seek to impede Mr Assange receiving
medical advice or care. We have made
this clear to the government of Ecuador.
But British officials have also made
it clear that Assange faces arrest if he
leaves the embassy.

THE LETTER below from a smug local

resident Englishman was published on
the Miami Heralds Letters page October
7, after the embarrassing loss in London
by the Miami Dolphins. (www.miamidolphins.com): How ironic that the Dolphins
played the Jets in London last weekend.
Maybe the Dolphins did not enjoy being
relegated to the third sporting event being
played in London after the Premier League
Football and the Rugby World Cup. Hint to
the Dolphins coaching staff: Obtain copies
of the South Africa/Scotland and Australia/
England rugby games, both showing how
to make a strong tackle! . . .Not long after
that dig, England became the first host nation ever to be eliminated first round in the
Rugby World Cup. Dolphin players, you
have my permission to chortle.

he said: Well the name was inherited and
for business reasons we did not want to
change it. Although we could call it Cactus

n SCOTTISH COMEDIAN CRAIG FERGUSON comes to Florida. In February 2008
he succeeded in becoming a US Citizen
mentioning that this is his home after thirteen
years and my heart is here. Soon after,
Ferguson landed himself the biggest gig
of all: A date with President Bush hosting
the White House Correspondence Dinner.
Critics raved of his witty and comical deliverance speech to the 3,000 attendees who
included political journalists, celebrities, and
Washingtons power players. He began his
entertainment career as a drummer in some
of the worst punk bands in the UK then after
several low paying acting gigs, discovered
he had a knack for comedy and was soon
the star of his own BBC television show,
The Ferguson Theory. Coming to America
in 1995 he appeared on the Drew Carey
Show from 1996-2003, finally getting his
own Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

For that he won his first Emmy nomination

in 2006, plus the 2009 Peabody Award for
Excellence in Broadcasting for his interview
with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He became
the topic of conversation within the media

Fraudster Who
Faked Coma To
Avoid Trial Is Jailed

UK Court Endorses View That

Bridge Is Not A Sport

A FRAUDSTER who faked a coma to

avoid prosecution has been jailed for
obstructing justice.
Alan Knight of Swansea, Wales, stole
more than 40,000 from the bank account
of an elderly neighbor.
After he was arrested in 2011, 48-yearold Knight claimed to be quadriplegic and
so sick he sometimes fell into a coma.
Abetted by his wife, Helen, he checked
himself into a hospital to avoid court appearances, saying he was having seizures.
Knights deceit was uncovered when
police tracked the use of his supermarket
card, and produced surveillance-camera
footage of him driving and walking.
Last year he was sentenced to four
years in prison for forgery, fraud and theft.
Last month, judge Huw Davies sentenced Knight to an additional 14 months.
Helen Knight received 10 months.

LEGIONS of bridge players in Britain

may feel theyve been dealt a rotten
hand after a court decision endorsed an
earlier ruling that the popular card game
is not a sport.
A High Court judge last month backed
Sport Englands assertion that bridge is
not a sport because it does not involve
physical activity. English Bridge Union
officials had challenged the ruling in
court.
Judge Ian Dove said in his ruling that
he had not been tasked with answering
the broad, somewhat philosophical
question of whether bridge is a sport
but simply whether Sport England had
committed any legal errors in reaching
its conclusion.
The decision will affect possible lottery funding for bridge tournaments.
Advocates for bridge had claimed that
Parliament recognizes mind sports
that build mental acuity.
MODEL AIRPLAINE FLYING
Disheartened bridge advocates say
the old fashioned definition means that
model airplane flying is viewed as a sport
while bridge is not.

An opportunity has been lost to enhance an activity which has substantial

Crafty Crocodile Question Causes

Exam To Have Pass Mark Lowered
A HIGHER maths question involving a
crocodile stalking its prey was so difficult
the examining authority were forced to
lower the pass marks.
The number of students that struggled, some reduced to tears, with the
question was so high immediate action
was necessary by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.
This involved the pass mark being
lowered to 34 percent for the Scottish
equivalent of an A-level. But the SQA
said later that the mark was lowered due
to the overall difficulty of the test rather
than an individual question.
However, the report, from the principal assessor in maths, does make
specific reference to two questions
which sparked outcry among students
on social media.
One brain-teaser, about the time it
took a frog and a toad to escape from
a well, apparently met expectations.
But the other, about a crocodile stalking its prey, proved to be challenging for
most candidates.
The report admits that the question
played a significant part in the pass mark
being lowered.
You may be wondering, how hard
could it have been?

THE QUESTION

Former principal assessor Jim Reid,

responsible for setting the maths exam
until 2012, told BBC Scotland issues
with the new papers should have been
spotted earlier.
On the pass mark, he added: To reduce it to that level really says the paper

was unfit for purpose.

Dr Gill Stewart, SQA Director of
Qualifications Development, said: As
we do every year, we consider what
went well in the most recent diet, and
where we need to make improvements
for the future.

ONE OF the victims of the Oregon

shooting last month was reportedly a
British mother studying at the college
alongside her teenage daughter.
Kim Dietz, 59, was one of nine people
gunned down at the Umpqua Community
College in Roseburg.
She attended as a mature student
alongside her 18-year-old daughter Shannon, who survived the attack unharmed,
The Sun reported.
Tributes on Facebook described her
as one of the nicest ladies who was a
kind soul and precious.
She worked as a caretaker at Pyrenees
Vineyards, in Myrtle Creek.
Her boss Robert Stryk said she was
very energetic, very kind kind soul
who loved the outdoors, her daughter
and two Great Pyrenees dogs.
Really the tragedy here is that this is
a woman who was just trying to better
herself, he told CTV News.
Ms Dietz was reportedly born in
Edmonton, north London, moved to
America as a child and lived in Roseburg,
Oregon.
Lucero Alcaraz, 19, of Roseburg;

Weve lost a huge figure of post-war
politics, the prime minister said. A
hero in World War II as beach master
at Anzio and a brave politician, Denis
Healey told his party hard truths about
Britain having to live within her means.
Healey initially supported Tony
Blair, whose New Labour movement
brought the party back to power after
a long drought, but he later broke with
Blair because of disagreement over
Blairs support for the Iraq war.
Healey also served as defense secretary in the 1960s.

Secretary, decorated World War II military hero and former British Treasury
chief Denis Healey died last month.
Healey was a towering figure on Britains political scene for several decades,
known for his familiar bushy eyebrows,
his forthright demeanor, and his wideranging interests, which included photography and the opera.
He never became party leader, narrowly losing a hotly contested leadership race to left-winger Michael Foot in
1980. That fateful defeat cost Healey the
chance to run for prime minister even
though he was made deputy party leader.
His most challenging moment in government came in 1976 when, as Treasury
chief, he had to go to the International
Monetary Fund for a desperately needed
loan to keep Britains battered finances
afloat.
That action, which required a series
of difficult cuts in public spending, cost
him left-wing support within the party,
a development that later doomed his
leadership bid.
Cameron praised Healeys long career
in public service and his bravery during
World War II, when Healey served as a

GEOFFREY HOWE, 88, the former

Treasury Chief and Conservative Party
figure died of a heart attack last month.
Howe, was a prominent figure in Margaret Thatchers government who helped
bring about her downfall after they parted
ways over policy toward Europe.
Prime Minister David Cameron, also
a Conservative, called Howe the quiet
hero of the first Thatcher government
who had shown huge courage and resolve in helping save the floundering
British economy.
Howe took the helm at Treasury
when Thatcher came to power in 1979
and helped implement the free-market
policies favored by the new prime minister. Income tax rates were lowered and
currency exchange controls were lifted.
NEGOTIATIONS
Howe moved on to become foreign
secretary in 1983. He played a key role
in the negotiations with the Chinese government over the future of Hong Kong,
and eventually became deputy prime
minister, but his relations with Thatcher
had deteriorated while he ran the Foreign
Office, primarily because of disagreements over policy toward Europe.
They also seemed to have tired of
each others style after a long period of
harmony that had served both well.
Howe played an important role in

Thatchers fall from

power. He resigned
in November 1990,
and used his departure speech to challenge her fitness
to continue serving
as party leader. He
called on Conservatives to reconsider
their backing for Thatcher, who was seen
as increasingly imperious after being in
power for more than a decade.
He used a famous cricket comparison
that has since become part of Britains
political lexicon to describe Thatchers
tactics.
It is rather like sending your opening
batsmen to the crease, only for them to
find, as the first balls are being bowled,
that their bats have been broken before
the game by the team captain, he
declared.
Thatcher resigned three weeks later
after losing the Conservatives backing.
Howes stunning public rebuke was seen
as a turning point in her bid to remain
in office.
Howe was a successful lawyer whose
first two campaigns for a seat in Parliament ended in defeat. He received a
knighthood in 1970 and was a member
of the House of Lords.

HOWARD KENDALL, 69, who led

Everton to two league championships
and a European title in the mid-1980s
in the first of three coaching spells with
the English club, has
died. Kendall died in
hospital in Southport, northwestern
England, Everton
did not give a cause
of death.
Kendall first took
charge of Everton
from 1981-87, winning the English league title and the
European Cup Winners Cup in 1985, and
the league again in 1987. It was the most
successful period in the clubs history.
He also managed Everton from 199093 and for the 1997-98 season, having
previously spent seven years of his
playing career at the club.
It is with great sadness that Everton
Football Club has learned of the passing
of Howard Kendall, an Everton club
statement said. The most successful
manager in the history of the club and
one of the greatest players to pull on the
Everton jersey.
As well as managing Everton, Kendall
also took control of Blackburn, Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, Manchester
City, Notts County, Sheffield United
and Greek sides Xanthi and Ethnikos
Piraeus.
As a player, Kendall was considered
one of the best never to play for England.
Together with Alan Ball and Colin
Harvey at Everton, he formed a threeman midfield partnership which was
nicknamed the holy trinity for its contribution to winning the league title in 1970.
He was signed for Everton from Preston North End in 1967 and also played for
Birmingham, Stoke and Blackburn, before returning to Goodison Park in 1981.

Michael Meacher,
Labour Minister
MICHAEL MEACHER, 75, was a
long-serving Labour MP who shrugged
off a reputation as a persnickety Leftwinger to become a useful member of
Tony Blairs government.
Branded Tony Benns vicar on earth
by Neil Kinnock at the height of Labours
internal strife, he managed for six years
as environment minister to avoid most
banana skins , before reverting to type
as a critic of Blairs policies.

Cricket: Bad Light Foils

England Victory
ENGLAND commenced a series against
Pakistan last month, in the United Arab
Emirates that featured four ODIs and three
Test matches. Pakistan has been unable
to host a home series since 2009, when
gunmen opened fire of the Sri Lankan team
bus, thus scaring the big Test nations away.
England opened the tour at Sharjah, with two,
two day games against a Pakistan A side
that were both drawn. First match; England
286-5 dec. Pakistan A 216-5 at close. Second game: Pakistan A 192-9 dec. England
198-9 at close.
At Abu Dhabi, England were robbed of
victory in the First Test when bad light was
called and England were 25 runs short of
victory. England skipper Alistair Cook batted
valiantly for 263 runs in 836 minutes. Younis
Khan beat the Pakistan Test scoring record
of Javed Miandad, overhauling Miandads
8,832 runs set in 1993. England needed
99 runs on the final day, but had to settle
for a draw Pakistan 528 (Shoiab Malik
245, Asad Shafig 107)-8 declared and 173.
England 598 (Alistair Cook 263)-9 dec and
74-4 at close.
The West Indies suspended head-coach
Phil Simmons, after he criticized the makeup of the Windies squad for Sri Lanka. The
Windies lost the first Test by an innings and
6 runs. Sri Lanka 484 (Dimuth Karunarate
186, Denesh Chandimal 151). West Indies
251 and 227.

Tennis: Johanna Konta Beats

World Number Two, But
Venus Prevails

After a good run at Flushing Meadows at

the US Open in September, Johanna Konta
inherited the British number one spot from
Heather Watson, and after starting the year as
150th in the world, moved to a world ranking
of 46. Konta was born in Australia, but has
played regularly in Britains Federation Cup
matches. She exuded bags of talent and
confidence at the Wuhan Open in China,
September 27- October 3. After two games of
qualifying, the 24 year old Konta, beat Andrea
Petkovic, and then Victoria Azarenko, who
withdrew injured after a set and one game.
She produced a galaxy of good shots when
she beat the world ranked number two,
Simona Halep of Romania. The 6-3, 3-6, 7-5,
score-line made her the first British woman
to beat a reigning world number two since
1981, when Sue Barker beat Tracy Austin.
Her competitive edge was never completely
dissipated against the unseeded Venus Williams, who eventually sent her on her way,
6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in the quarter-finals. Williams
beat Wimbledon finalist Spains Garbine
Muguruza in the final British number two,
Alijaz Bedene was in China too. He beat
Mikhail Youzhny of Russia before falling to
Koreas Hyeon Chung at the Shenzen Open.
Lukas Rosol ousted Bedene in the first round
of the China Open.

Djokovic Stops Murray

Konta was beaten in a qualifying match at

the Linz Open in Austria, but got a place in the
main draw after one of the players pulled up
injured. She beat Germanys Annicka Beck,
before losing 6-3, 7-5 to Madison Biengle
Heather Watson reached the quarter-finals
of the Hong Kong Open, before being eliminated in a tough three setter to Australias
Samantha Stosur Laura Robson who has
already lost 17 months out to injury, while
her performances since returning have not
been inspiring; has decided to take the rest
of the year off in the hope her injured hand
will finally heal.
Andy Murray was beaten in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters by old nemesis
Novak Djokovic 6-1, 6-3. Previously the Scot
had dispatched Americans, Steve Johnson
and John Isner, followed by Czech, Tomas
Berdych.

Boxing In Manchester

Action at the Manchester Arena, October

9, saw British fighters leave the stadium with
world titles. Local Mancunian Terry Flanagan
produced a vicious left hook in the second
round that left American challenger Diego
Magdaleno (28-2) completely discombobulated and the ref stopped it, as unbeaten Terry

Turbo, Flanagan (29-0) retained his WBO

lightweight crown. Liverpools Liam Smith
tackled John Thompson of Newark, NJ, for
the vacant WBO light-middleweight title. The
Scouser (22-0) was behind on points, but
caught the American with a perfectly delivered right hand in the sixth, while in the seventh, Thompson (17-2) stayed down IBF
featherweight champion Lee Selby faced his
American debut in Phoenix, Arizona, and beat
the experienced 36-year-old Mexican, Fernando Montiel (54-5-2) with a unanimous
decision to retain his crown. The Welshman
from Barry, (22-1) had to fight hard against a
man whose career includes 20 title bouts
Big super-heavyweight Joe Joyce, had his
eye on the gold medal at the AIBA World
Amateur Boxing Championships at Qatar, but
had to be satisfied with the bronze.

2-0, without the assistance of the injured

Wayne Rooney who missed the second
game too. At Vilnius, against Lithuania, Ross
Barkley, had England ahead after 29 minutes,
then a fiery shot from Harry Kane bounced
out of the goalkeepers hands and in to the
net, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain too, as
England claimed a 3-0 victory.
Northern Ireland have produced some of
their best soccer in recent years, and not only
won Group F, but managed the whole qualifying process with just one defeat (Romania in
Bucharest). They finished their schedule with
a 3-1 win at Windsor Park, against Greece,
where Steven Davis grabbed one in each
half and Josh Magennis got the third, while
the Greeks got a goal back four minutes
from time. In Helsinki, Craig Cathcart, put
the Ulstermen ahead in the 31st minute, but
Finland levelled it up three minutes from the
whistle for 1-1 result.

Lewis Hamiltons quest for a third world

Formula One crown looks on target and
needs just nine points from the final four
races. Hamilton won the Japanese Grand
Prix from number two on the grid, and did the
same at the Russian Grand Prix, October 10,
after edging team-mate Nico Rosberg on the
second turn of the first lap. It was the eighth
and ninth victories from fourteen races this
year for the British driver.
Europes richest horse race, the Prix de
lArc de Triomphe run at Longchamps, Paris,
October 4, witnessed Epsom Derby winner
Golden Horn, crossed the finishing line two
lengths ahead of the field. Flintshire (20-1)
was second and New Bay (4-1) Even money
favourite Treve, looking for a third consecutive victory in the Arc was fourth. 17 ran.
Golden Horn rode by Frankie Dettorri trained
by John Gosden, and owned by Anthony
Oppeneimer, a diamond businessman who
owns the Hascombe & Valiant Stud at Newmarket. The Horn (9-2) kept tucked in behind
the leaders as the race progressed and made
the move coming down the home straight of
the one mile and half course.

Wales lost 2-0 at Zenica against BosniaHervegovina, but as Cyprus won 2-1 in
Israel, and vagaries of the group table, the
Welsh acquired one of the second qualifying place in Group B, behind Belgium. A
joyful Gareth Bale of Real Madrid, called it
The best loss of my life. The Balkan side
scored in the 71st and final minute, against
a competent Wales performance where 750
travelling Welsh supporters would roar themselves voiceless in adamant approval of the
Welsh qualification. Chris Colemans men
completed their schedule with a 2-0 win over
Andorra, at Cardiff, where the champagne
flowed. Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale
were the marksmen.

Golf: Fitzpatrick & Sullivan

Are Trophy Winners

21-year-old Matthew Fitzpatrick claimed

his first European tour success, capturing
the British Masters at Woburn with a 15
under 269, October 10. The Sheffield golfer
produced seven birdies on the final nine
of the final round, to edge Irelands Shane
Lowry and Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark by
two strokes. Fitzpatrick ranked 111th in the
world won the US Amateur Championship
in 2013 The USA won the Presidents Cup
for the ninth time in eleven encounters, with
a final day come-back that saw them win 15
and a half to 14 and a half.
Andy Sullivan stomped all over the field at
the Portuguese Masters at Vilmoura, where
he galloped off with the tournament winning
by nine strokes with a 23 under 261. Compatriot Chris Wood was second with a 14 under.
For Andy Sullivan it was his third European
tour success of the year, having already won
the South African and Johannesburg Opens.

Ireland & Wales Qualify

England who had already qualified at

the top of Group E for the Euro-16 finals
in France, next year, were joined by Wales
and Northern Ireland, both having their best
international season in years as the concluding matches from the qualifying groups ended
October 8-13. England kept their one hundred
per cent winning record, winning their final
encounters. At Wembley, Estonia held out

net. Raheem Sterling added to the score-line

Scots Finish With Goal Fiesta

At Hampden Park, Scotland saw their

hopes crumble with the final kick of the
match, when Poland came from 2-1 down,
to tie the contest 2-2, and Scotlands exclusion from the French finals became an
unpopular fact of life. Bayern Munich star
Robert Lewandowski, penetrated the Scottish defense in the third minute, and the home
side was made aware of a big fight on their
hands. Matt Ritchie equalized on the break,
Steven Fletcher netted in the 62nd minute,
then Lewandowski struck again in the closing
seconds against what was thought to be a
well-earned and deserved Scottish victory.
The Scots finished the tournament with a 6-0
win at Gibraltar, that included a hat-trick by
Steven Fletcher, and goals from Chris Martin,
Shaun Maloney and Steve Naismith.

Champions League: London Clubs

Lose, Manchester Clubs Win

The second round of the Champions

League group stages, September 29-30, saw
only the Manchester sides record victories.
Jose Mourinho visited his former club FC
Porto in Portugal, where Chelsea came away
2-1 losers. The hosts scored one in each half
with Willian netting for the Blues At the
Emirates Stadium, Olympiakos topped the
Gunners 3-2, where an own goal by David
Ospina, was not helpful. The Greeks went
ahead in the 33rd minute, but two minutes
late Theo Walcott, equalized. Alex Sanchez
got one in the 65th minute, but the Greeks
hit the third a minute later..Old Trafford
rocked to the sound of success after Manchester United produce a 2-1 win over Vfl
Wolfsburg, after being a goal down after just
four minutes. Juan Mata and Chris Smalling
were the marksmen In Germany, Manchester City were 2-1 winners at Borussia
Monchengladbach, where goalie Joe Hart,
saved a penalty in the 19th minute. The hosts
poached the lead nine minutes after the break,
while Nicolas Otamendi, got the Sky Blues
level in the 65th minute, and Sergio Aguero,
got the winner in the final minute.
The second games of the Europa League
Cup, October 1, produced draws for the
British clubs. Erik Lamela put Tottenham
ahead at Monaco, ten minutes before halftime, before El Shaarany scored a leveler
nine minutes from the whistle. Celtic went
2-0 up against Fenerbahce at Parkhead with
first half goals by Leigh Griffiths and Kris
Commons. But the Turks came back after a
double by Vianna de Santana, just after the
break and the hoops had to be satisfied with
a 2-2 scoreline. In Switzerland, Adam Lallana
scored in the fourth minute for Liverpool
against Sion, who equalized in the 17th minute
resulting in a 1-1 tie.
The quarter-finals of the Scottish Petrovac Training Challenge Cup a competition for
clubs outside of the premier league, O ctober
10-11, witnessed St Mirren win 4-0 at home
against Dunfermline. Peterhead beat Steinhousemuir 3-0, and Queens Park won 2-1 at
Hampden over Elgin City.

Misery For Klinsmann & Co

The play-off Gold Cup match between

Mexico and the USA, deciding who will represent CONCACAF in the FIFA Confederation

Cup in Russia, 2017, drew a 93,000 plus

crowd at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, October
10. The US had players with 100 plus caps
in the squad, including Michael Bradley,
Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley and
Tim Howard, but it did not do them a lot of
good. The US was on the defensive for large
portions of the game, while Mexicos total
ball possession tactics and excellent man
to man passing, proved highly effective as
they forged a 3-2 win in extra-time. Former
Manchester United favourite, Javier Chicharito Hernandez put El Tri ahead after ten
minutes, while Geoff Cameron, levelled it for
the Americans. Oribe Peralta made it 2-1,
and a Bobby Wood goal 2-2. Paul Aguilar hit
an extraordinary winner for the Mexicans during a very tense thirty minutes of extra-time.
At Harrison, NJ, against Costa Rica a
few days later, Coach Klinsmann left out
Dempsey, Beasley and Bradley, and brought
goalie Tim Howard, back in to the team
after a 17 month absence. It did not change
anything however, and the US plunged to its
fifth consecutive defeat after Arsenals Joel
Campbell netted for the Costa-Ricans in the
70th minute for the only goal of the game.

Sporting Passings

His Test match career lasted barely five

years, but what a five years it was. Frank
Typhoon Tyson was given preference
over Freddie Truman in the Ashes battle
against Australia down-under in the midfifties, where he wreaked havoc amongst
the Aussie batsmen. Sir Don Bradman and
Richie Benaud hailed him as the fastest
bowler of that particular era. Prone to injuries
however, Tyson was forced in to retirement
at 30-years-of age. His 17 game Test match
career brought 76 wickets for an average
of 18.56 runs. He was born in Farnworth
outside of Bolton, and received his county
cap at Northamptonshire in 1952. He moved
to Australia after his retirement working as a
coach, cricket writer and broadcast commentator. Frank Tyson was 85.

Beckhams MLS Miami Franchise

Meanders Slowly Along

David Beckhams quest for a MLS franchise in Miami, moved forward last month, as
bureaucratic machinations and political considerations edged the project a little nearer
to conclusion. The location alongside the
Florida Marlins baseball stadium had already
been decided, but Beckhams people are
looking to save on property taxes and want
to rent rather than buy the land. The property,
though County owned, has businesses on
it that will need to be bought out. Now, the
Miami-Dade School Board with its tax exemption status says it would take ownership of
the acreage, and lease the land for Beckhams
soccer stadium with the understanding that
Beckham Miami United would partner with
the school board in various soccer activities
for its students. This appears agreeable to
Beckham and his backers. A plan for the
complete franchise needs to be concluded
soon, as the stadium will be on the Miami
ballot next March, and presented to voters
who will approve or disapprove of the new
pro-soccer team.

Hamilton Claims Third World

Formula One Championship
Needing just nine points from the United
States Grand Prix at Austin, Texas, October
25, Lewis Hamilton overtook Mercedes
team-mate Nico Rosberg with just ten laps
to go, and took his tenth victory of 2015; and
the world championship for the second year
running. Hamilton and Rosberg, dueled the
whole race, before the British driver made
an innovative move near the end of the race.
Hurricane Patricia coming from Mexico led to
bad weather, but the race continued.

a goalless game against Dynamo Kiev
Manchester United went a goal behind after
15 minutes in Moscow, but Anthony Martial

found the Spurs net in the 75th minute giving
the hosts a 2-1 win Former Manchester
United favourite, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, got
his old job back at Molde, where the Norwegian champions welcomed Celtic, and were
2-0 up by the break. Kris Commons put the
Hoops on the scorecard in the 55th minute,
but Molde got another one minute later that
gave them a 3-1 result Liverpool went a
goal down at Anfield in the 15th minute against
Rubin Kazan, but Emre Can levelled it eight

England Sink At The World

Cup Pool Stage
ENGLAND shuffled humiliated out of the
World Cup when they lost 33-13 to Australia
in their penultimate pool match.
It was the first time in Cup history that
the host nation had been eliminated at the
pool stage. But England had their chances,
notably in their match at Twickenham against
Wales. Here they led comfortably for most of
the match, opening a 22-15 lead with barely
a quarter of the match remaining.
But Wales suddenly stepped up several
gears with a converted try and a couple of
penalty goals leaving England 25-28 down
with a couple of minutes left. Englands captain, Chris Robshaw, then had the moment
of his life. His side were awarded a kickable
penalty to draw the game but he elected to
kick for touch and use his forwards to force
the ball over the line.
The Welsh defended as though their lives
depended on it and kept the English at bay
till the final whistle gave them a surprise victory and passage through to the quarter-finals
at Englands expense. A draw would have
been the fairest result and, given the way
things turned out, it would have guaranteed
England a place in the last eight.

Villa Fires Manager Sherwood

After 8 Months

ASTON VILLA fired manager Tim Sherwood

last month after eight months in charge of the
Premier League club.
Villa lost 2-1 at home to Swansea October 25, a sixth straight defeat in the league,
having not won since the opening day of
the season in August against Bournemouth.
The club, owned by American Randy
Lerner, is in the Premier League relegation
zone with only four points from 10 matches.
Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert as
manager in February when the club dropped
into the relegation zone. He went to lead Villa
to safety with a finish of 17th last season
and also guided the team into the final of
the FA Cup, before losing 4-0 to Arsenal at
Wembley in May.

Sam Allardyce Takes Over From

Advocaat At Sunderland

SAM ALLARDYCE was appointed as Premier

League Sunderlands new manager last
month, eight years after he had a brief spell in
charge of their arch-rivals Newcastle United.
Sunderland confirmed the appointment in
a statement, less than a week after Dutchman
Dick Advocaat left the club.
The 68-year-old Advocaat was initially
hired on a two-month deal last season and,
after saving the team from relegation in May,
he had a change of heart and decided to
stay for a season. Now he is leaving without
compensation.
Allardyce has been out of management
since leaving West Ham United at the end of
last season, has signed a two-year deal and
said: I have enjoyed my break from football
and now Im raring to get back.

But this is a young English side with a lot

to look forward to. Whether Stuart Lancaster
will remain as coach seems doubtful. England
are the biggest rugby-playing nation with
the largest player-base and in receipt of a
huge budget. With all his resources he really
should have done better but it will be decisions like installing a Rugby League convert,
Sam Burgess, in the centre when there were
others like Luther Burrell with experience
and a far stronger claim that will ultimately
decide his fate.

Other Home Nations

Advance To Quarter-Finals

The other home nations all progressed

more or less as expected. Wales took on Australia to decide the pool winners but despite
at one stage playing against a 13-man Aussie
side, two men having been yellow-carded,
they were unable to make their advantage
count and lost 6-15.
Scotland were in a group where they were
fancied to prosper, having only South Africa
to worry about. As it turned out, they were
slaughtered by the Springboks, but found
enough strength to defeat Japan (themelves
surprise winners over South Africa) and
finally survived a battering at the hands and
feet of Samoa.
Ireland played out of their skins, going
through as pool winners, thanks to a hefty
defeat of France, and looking the best of all
the home sides. They are after all current
Six Nations champions. Their hopes were
considerably diminished by injuries to key
players like Jonny Sexton and Paul OConnell.
They will be able to sympathise with Wales
who were missing no less than 9 top players
going into the quarter-finals.
chester City used a second-half onslaught to
beat Newcastle 6-1 last month and provisionally reclaim top spot in the Premier League.
Aleksandar Mitrovic had put the visitors
ahead in the 18th minute but Aguero leveled
in the 42nd and it was all City after the break.
Aguero added goals in the 49th and 50th minutes and Kevin de Bruyne netted Citys fourth
three minutes later as Newcastle crumbled.
Aguero finished off the rout with goals in
the 60th and 62nd before being taken off by
manager Manuel Pellegrini denying him a
chance to become the first player to score six
goals in a Premier League game.

Beckham Returning To Old

Trafford In UNICEF Game

DAVID BECKHAM will play in a football match

for the first time since retiring more than two
years ago, with Alex Ferguson managing his
former Manchester United star again.
In a UNICEF fundraising fixture on
November 14, the 40-year-old Beckham will
captain a Britain and Ireland team against a
world all-star side led by 1998 World Cup
winner Zinedine Zidane and managed by
Carlo Ancelotti.
The game is taking place at Old Trafford
where Beckham became a global star under
Ferguson before leaving in 2003.

UEFA Fines England Over Crowd

Disturbances In Euro Qualifier

UEFA HAS fined England, Lithuania, Scotland

and Poland over crowd issues in European
Championship qualifiers last month.
England was fined 15,000 euros ($16,510)
over crowd disturbances in the 3-0 victory
over Lithuania in Vilnius on October 12.
The Lithuanian federation must pay UEFA
20,000 euros after also being found guilty
of crowd disturbances and for breaching
ticketing regulations and blocking stairways.
The heaviest sanctions announced by
UEFA related to Scotlands 2-2 home draw
with Poland on October 8.
Poland was fined 40,000 euros after its
fans clashed with stewards and set off and
threw of fireworks among other objects.
Scotland was fined 20,000 euros over field
invasions by supporters, stairways being
blocked and a lack of searches of fans.

Eddie Howe Signs Contract

Extension With Bournemouth

BOURNEMOUTH says manager Eddie Howe

has signed a contract extension with the
Premier League club.
Howe guided the Cherries to the top flight
for the first time in the clubs history after
winning the second tier last season.
Howe already had a contract with the
club for the next 2-1/2 years. The extension
will take him past 2018, and reportedly until
2020.

Jurgen Klopp Replaces

Brendan Rodgers At Liverpool

JURGEN KLOPP, last month, became the

seventh person to manage Liverpool in the
Premier League era, and the 20th since the
club was founded in 1892.
The 48-year-old German was appointed
following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers
after three years and four months in charge
at Anfield.

Slo-Mo TV Picks Up Foul

Play

The standard of rugby has been as high

as ever though the referees intentions of
penalising crooked feeds to the scrum, trumpeted loudly before the World Cup, has been
almost studiously ignored. On the other hand,
there has been a genuine effort to cut out foul
and dangerous play. This played a real part
in Englands defeat by Australia when with
England within a score of levelling the game,
the referee gave Owen Farrell a yellow card
for a body block on an Aussie. At the same
moment Sam Burgess was also penalised for
a vicous head-high tackle and was lucky to
avoid a yellow card himself.
The slow-motion TV replays have slowed
the game down all too often but have been
vital in ensuring the authenticity of a try or the
violence of a tackle.

Scotland Beaten On Bad Call

As All Blacks Meet Australia
In Final
A controversial refereeing call saw Scotland beaten in the last minute of their Quarter
final match against Australia October 19. Final
score 35-34. Argentina were too much for
Ireland coming out 43-20 victors, while Wales
fell, just, to the South Africa 23-19. The semi
finals had South Africa pip the All Blacks 2318, as Australia took care of Argentina 29-15.
So, its a New Zealand v Australia final on
October 31 at Twickenham. The bronze final
between South Africa and Argentina will be at
the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London
the previous day.
jpolley2@sky.com
Klopp is thought to have signed an initial
three-year deal at Liverpool and will bring
with him assistants Peter Krawietz and
Zeljko Buvac.
Klopp arrived at Anfield after a short break,
having left Dortmund in the summer.

Chelseas Mourinho Fined,

Given Suspended Stadium Ban

CHELSEA manager Jose Mourinho has been

fined 50,000 and given a suspended onegame stadium ban for accusing referees of
being biased against his team.
Speaking after a 3-1 loss to Southampton
on October 3, Mourinho said referees are
afraid to give decisions for Chelsea.
Englands Football Association says
Wednesday that Mourinhos remarks constituted improper conduct as they implied
bias and brought the game into disrepute.
The suspended stadium ban will come into
effect if Mourinho commits a further breach
of rules before October 13 next year.

Bournemouth Striker Callum

Wilson Out For 6 Months

BOURNEMOUTH says striker Callum Wilson

will be out for six months with a ruptured
anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Wilson, who has scored five goals in
seven Premier League games for newly
promoted Bournemouth, had an operation
last month.
The 23-year-old Wilson is already the third
player in Bournemouths squad to sustain
an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury this
season, after signings Tyrone Mings and Max
Gradel. Mings will not play again this season,
while Gradel is out for six months.

City Profitable For First Time

Under Abu Dhabi Ownership

MAN CITY is profitable for the first time since

being bought by a member of Abu Dhabis
ruling family in 2008.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al
Nahyans team reported a profit of 10.7m
during the 2014-15 financial year, covering
a season when it failed to win a trophy. The
previous year, when winning the Premier
League, City lost 22.9m.
City had previously been fined by UEFA for
breaching Financial Fair Play rules as it spent
heavily to catch up with rivals with a more
sustained record of success.

Footballer Ched Evans Granted

Appeal On Rape Conviction

A FORMER Premier League player who was

convicted of rape has had his case referred to
Englands Court of Appeal following a review.
Wales international Ched Evans was
released from prison last year after serving
half of his five-year sentence for raping a
19-year-old woman in a hotel in north Wales.
Evans, who has played for Manchester
City and Sheffield United, always maintained
his innocence and took the case to the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
After a 10-month investigation, the CRCC
said last month that a referral has been
made on the basis of new information not
raised at trial.
The CRCC says in a statement that there
is a real possibility that the Court of Appeal
may now quash the conviction.
