Learning Objectives:
Preparing Chapter 5 of your Research Report
What are the key elements in Conclusion
chapter (Chapter 5) of your Research Report?
What are the proper steps in your Chapter 5?

What is the check list for Chapter 5?

Answer the research questions
Achieve the research objectives
Answer how you filled the gap in the literature
as you posited in chapter 2
List any other contribution/s
What are the limits of your research?
What are the Implications of your research?
Compare your findings with the findings from
previous research (Discussion)
Recommendations & the Future directions

Overall Goal for Chapter 5

Analysis of results in the context of the
literature described in Chapter 2 (Discussion).
Implications for further research, practice, and
social change.
Conclusion of the whole Report

CHAPTER FIVE
DISCUSSION, RECOMMENDATION, AND CONCLUSIOIN

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Introduction
Summary of the Findings
Discussion of the Findings
Implications of the Findings
Recommendation & Suggestions for the
Future Research
6. Conclusion

1. Start with an Introduction

The chapter begins with a brief overview of
why and how the study was done,
reviewing the questions or issues being
addressed and
a brief summary of the findings.

2. Interpretations of the Findings

Includes conclusions that address all of the
research questions.
Contains references to outcomes in Chapter 4
Covers all the data.
Is bounded by the evidence collected.
Relates the findings to a larger body of
literature on the topic, including the
conceptual/theoretical framework.
7

3. Discussion
Refer to the hypotheses, objectives, or questions.
Assess the meaning of the results by evaluating and
interpreting.
Speculation should be reasonable, firmly justified, and subject
to test.
This is the hardest part to write because your examiner/s may
challenge the interpretation of the data in the evaluation
process.
List the primary research questions from Chapter 1 and
answer them with the results.
Cite several studies from Chapter 2 for comparison and
contrast with the results.

4. Implications of your findings

The Implications are clearly grounded in the
significance section of Chapter 1 and
outcomes presented in Chapter 4.
The implications are expressed in terms of
tangible improvements to individuals,
communities, organizations, institutions,
cultures, or societies.
9

5. Recommendations
Action:
Should flow logically from the conclusions and
contain steps to useful action.
State who needs to pay attention to the results.
Indicate how the results might be disseminated.

Further Study:
Point to topics that need closer examination and
may generate a new round of questions.
10

6. Concluding Conclusion
The conclusions relate directly to the research
questions or objectives.
They represent the contribution to the knowledge.
They also relate directly to the significance of the
study, which is always, in some way, to improve the
human condition.
These are the major generalizations, the answer to the
problem(s) revealed in Chapters 1 and 2.
For the first time in the dissertation, the researcher
can state a personal opinion when the collected data
support it.

Basic Functions of a Good Conclusion

1.To summarize:
What you researched
Nature of your main arguments
How you researched it
What you discovered
What pre-existing views were challenged
2.To provide an overview of :
The new knowledge or information discovered
The significance of your research (where is it new?)
The limitations of your thesis (concepts, data)
Speculation on the implications of these limitations
Areas for further development and research(alternative data sets; links with
other fields; different method applied to same data)

The Main Criteria

You must :
1.Make a clear and concise statement of the original
contribution to knowledge found in your thesis.

Ideally you should aspire to:

1.Show links between the key ideas spread across
chapters
2.Show your commitment to and enthusiasm for academic
research
3.Leave a positive impression with the examiner

A Good Conclusion?
A conclusion should stress the
importance of the thesis
statement, give the essay a sense
of completeness, and leave a final
impression on the reader.

Wish you all the Best

& Success

GOOD LUCK !
