DESCRIPTION
Advanced QoS Features - The DMSwitch 4000
series has 8 queues per port, with prioritization
algorithms that allows different configurations
for priority definition for certain data flows,
weight configuration for each queue, minimum
data rate definition, or even a mix of such
parameters. Classification of services may be
done according to IEEE 802.1p, IP precedence
or DSCP fields, TCP and UDP ports, among
other possibilities. Data comparison can be
performed up to Layer 7. Bandwidth control is
performed with a 64 Kbps granularity on the
definition of CIR-Committed Information Rate,
and PIR-Peak Information Rate, and may be
applied to both incoming or out coming ports,
or alternatively to a specific packet flow using
pre-defined filters.

Layer 2 and Layer 3 Multicast - Designed for

multicast applications, the DMSwitch 4000
series handles Layer 2 and Layer 3 multicast
packets on hardware, supporting IGMP-Internet
Group Management Protocol v1/v2/v3 and PIMSM Protocol Independent Multicast* protocol.
The DMSwitch 4000 series also supports PIMRegister and PIM-SSM message encapsulation
via hardware according to RFC4601 and RFC4607
respectively. DR static or via BooTStrap RP
configurations are also supported.
L2, L3 and MPLS at Wire-Speed - Layer 2,
Layer 3 and MPLS packet switching is done on
hardware, with a switch fabric of up to 384 GB.
Level 2, 3 and MPLS protocols are software-run,
facilitating MAC table, IP route creation and
MPLS push/pop/swap tables.*

The DMSwitch 4000 series
supports
static
and
dynamic
Communicationsrouting RIPv2, OSPFv2

and BCPv4*. TLS -Transparent LAN Services, may be

implemented through Layer 2 VPN over MPLS. Layer 3
VPN over MPLS is also supported using BGP according
to RFC 2547/4364(*). The DMswitch 4000 may be
used as a LER-Label Edge Router as well as a core
LSR-Label Switch Router. For MPLS implementations
LSP or MPLS tunnels may be established through LDP
and RSVP-TE protocols. LDP over RSVP tunneling is
also supported. VPNs may be created on point-topoint, meshed and point-multipoint topologies. (*)
Powerful Management - A complete centralized FCAPS
(Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance,
and Security) is available through IERUs DMView
NMS, using Windows R or Solaris R platforms. The
DMSwitch series has a CLI-Command Line Interface
providing command and parameter automatic
help through SSH, Telnet and RS232 consoles. An
internal WEB server with SSL, SNMPv1, v2 and v3
agents and four RMPON groups is also available.
In the standalone mode, the interface modules
have an optional Ethernet interface for out-ofband management. The DMSwitch 4000 allows for
creation of complex ACLs -Access Control Lists, with
multiple comparison and action parameters, enabling
modification, direction, discarding or prioritization of
packets. Tools for network, cabling connectivity and
diagnostics are also available. Cables may be tested
for possible interruptions or short circuits, indicating
the approximate distance of the failure. Port and
packet flows are monitored and redirected to any
specific port. Devices can store up to 10 different
firmware versions and up to 4 different configurations
facilitating simple and easy
management of
firmware and configuration versions, enabling the
ability to choose with which version to initialize the
unit. Firmware upgrades and configuration uploads/
downloads may be done through TFTP and/or HTTP.
VLANs - Virtual LANs may be built/configured on the
DMSwitch 4000 using all of the 4096 VLANs defined
according to IEEE 802.1Q, offering double tagging
(Q-in-Q) functionality and enabling the creation of
TLS-Transparent LAN Services, throughout the MAN.
VLANs may be defined according to protocol, to
MAC address and to IP-Subnet address. Ports may
be overlapped on port-based VLANs, while GVRP
-Generic VLAN Registration Protocol, may be used
for dynamic VLAN configuration.

Mechanical Chassis Cages - The DMSwitch 4000

line supports modular interface cards and MPU
redundancy. The backplane is passive with redundant
power supplies. The connection between the MPU and
interface modules uses fail-safe protected topology
ensuring total redundancy for data paths. MPUs
and ICs -Interface Cards, are fully interchangeable
between all chassis.
Robust Security Mechanisms - The DMSwitch 4000
series is featured with mechanisms that guarantee
security in the operation and maintenance of
the install base. All communication protocols are
encrypted and can specify, via filters, which units
of the network may have management access to
other equipment. A highly secure and trustworthy
management structure can be built using local and
remote Syslog access, while user authentication is
provided through RADIUS and TACACS+ servers.
E-mail alarm notifications, single SNTP clock,
protection against DoS-Denial of Service, attacks
and IEEE 802.1x port authentication protocol further
enhance protection of the devices. For Metro Ethernet
applications the quantity of MAC addresses may be
limited per port and per VLAN. Bandwidth in every
port can be limited for broadcast, multicast and DLF
-Destination Lookup Failure, traffic. Additionally
Layer 2 and Layer 3 protection mechanisms may be
utilized to avoid network attacks.
Protection Mechanisms - Spanning Tree Protocols
are available. RSTP-Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol,
which has shorter conversion times, MSTP-Multiple
Spanning Tree Protocol for enhanced resources
allocation and greater scalability, as well as EAPS
-Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching protocol,
specific for sub-50ms Ethernet rings. Port trunking
functionalities enable grouping of physical ports
into logical ports, with automatic load balacing
and with typical sub-200ms recovery times. Such
mechanisms provide for the design of Metro Ethernet
topologies with high level of protection and short
failure recovery times.
Pseudowire (*) The DMSwith 4000 series supports
emulation of TDM and PDH circuits over L2/L3 and
MPLS networks according to the latest CESoPSN and
SAToP standards. This enables the DMSwitch 4000
series to function as a multi-service over packet
platform (MSoP) converging between legacy and
next-generation packet-based services.

supports End-to-End OAM (CFM) according to IEEE

802.3ag and ITU-T Y.1731. This enables proactive

and Frame Delay Variation measurements enhance

monitoring functions. Point-to-Point OAM (EFM)
according to IEEE 802.3ah is also supported. This
enables fault indications, including Dying Gasp,
Unidirectional Link and Critical Events. EFM operates
with configurable intervals between PDUs for full
interoperability with other vendors.
