Values of Hansen Solubility Parameters

for Solvents, Soils, and Polymers
The values reported in this appendix represent but a tiny
portion of the information available from global sources
on this topic. The purpose of this appendix is to provide
a useful selection of commonly used values as a ready
reference.

A. HANSEN SOLUBILITY PARAMETER

DATA ABOUT CLEANING SOLVENTS
Data for selected solvents are given in Table C11-1A. In
addition to the two cited references, an additional data
source were manufacturers of the solvents. dHildebrand is that
computed from Equation 2.7. The listing is alphabetical.

B. HANSEN SOLUBILITY PARAMETER

DATA ABOUT SOIL COMPONENTS
Data for selected components, which might be part of soil
materials, are given in Table C11-2. Each of the soil materials1 in Table C11-2 is a pure2 component. The listing is
alphabetical. dHildebrand is computed from Equation 2.7.

Note the identication of water as water with organic liquids, and

not pure water. Water is a unique molecule in that its character and
behavior often depend on its local environment. Water concentration is
part of that environment (Appendix C5).
When one calculates the HSP values for single water molecules,
unassociated with other molecules, one gets quite different values to those
noted in Table C11-2: for pure water ddisperse 15.5, dpolar 16.0, and
dhydrogen bonding 42.3; for water commingled with organic liquids ddisperse
18.1, dpolar 17.1, and dhydrogen bonding 16.9. The presence of organic
liquids (at whatever concentration) drastically affects the extent of hydrogen
bonding in water.
The intensity of hydrogen bonding molecular forces in a molecule of
tiny molecular volume (only 18 cc/g-mole) makes its HSP values unique.
Uniformly throughout this book, the only noted and used values for the
HSP of water are those of water with organic liquids, and that identication
will be always noted.
2
Or as pure as HSP information about it is available. This means that no
reliable HSP data could be found for a substance which might be
a component of each listed soil.
1

Note that some materials, such as turpentine or mineral

oil, listed in Table C11-2 as soils, might be identied as
solvents and could be also be listed in Table C11-1. One
user's solvent can be another user's soil.

POLYMERIC MATERIALS
Hansen solubility parameter dataB for commercial polymeric products, which might be found as soils, are given in
