African Influence Carnival.
The first carnival of Italy consisted of masked balls with great emphasis on
costumes. The tradition soon spread to other European countries, including
Portugal, birthplace of the Brazilian Carnival. The Portuguese brought many
slaves from Africa, why Carnival has a significant African influence. Africans
wore masks and costumes made with feathers, bones, herbs, stones and
other elements to invoke the gods and ward off evil spirits. All this had a
symbolic meaning in the tradition of this region and is now an integral part
of designing costumes for Carnival of modern Rio.
The introduction of Samba in Brazil and the Birth of the Samba Schools
Music and dance are associated with Samba carnival in Brazil since 1917.
The samba is originally from Angola and West Africa and the slaves
introduced in these lands found in this music comfort in difficult times. With
the abolition of slavery, many of these slaves moved to Rio, and settled in
places like Cidade Nova Prace Onze and they became important centers of
music and dance Samba. As this rate gained popularity, composers,
musicians and dancers are used to gather to demonstrate their talent,
forming clubs and associations which competed with each other. These
groups accounted for the implementation of the samba schools, whose first
official parade took place in 1932. The crowd grew at the same pace as the
contest until the formation of the Association of Schools of Samba City in Rio
de Janeiro, the which organizes the Samba parades during Carnival in Rio.
Since then, the "samba schools" have evolved over the years into large
modern business-like organizations. Media have large infrastructures which
enable them prepare the Rio Carnival every year. Each school has a wellorganized group of hardcore fans by a specific management team. Many of
them are dedicated to keeping your neighborhood social groups with limited
resources.
The Sambadrome - Heart Rio Carnival
Until 1984, the Marques de Sapucai Avenue, one of the oldest streets of Rio,
was the scene where the Rio Carnival is celebrated. However, the popularity
of the carnival led to the construction of concrete structures on both sides of
the street. This building, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, was commissioned as
'Sambadrome' and hosts the parade since 1984. Each year, thousands of
dancers, singers and musicians from the groups arrive at Rio Carnival butt
to present their floats, costumes and rhythms in the Sambadrome. The
performances are lavish and grandiose during the approximately 85 minutes
that each school has to demonstrate the fruit of a whole year of work. On
Sunday and Monday of Carnival are the two important days in which twelve
of the top samba schools compete for the championship title in the stadium.
Thousands of tourists from all over the world gather in Rio to witness the
Samba Parade and the feast in true Brazilian style. The event is broadcast to
the whole world, for those who can not be present in 'the biggest party on
the planet'. The parade in the Sambadrome is well organized and each
participant plays a particular role in distilling. What is unique about the
Carnival in Rio is that schools have different themes each year. Also, do not
disguise or any number, so that it becomes one of the best existing shows
are repeats. The entrance to the Sambadrome is paid. However, you can get

Carnival dates - An ancient formula
The Rio Carnival is celebrated for five days, from Friday to next Tuesday or
Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. For most Christians, Lent is a
time to reflect on their lives and communion with God. The aim of the
carnival is to enjoy a week of festivities last 40 days before withdrawal
ending in Easter, the day of Christ's resurrection. The popularization of
extravagance is not what the Church had in mind but can not deny that the
Rio Carnival is the largest festival in the world, broadcast to millions of
homes all over the world. Carnival dates change every year according to the
Christian calendar. The date of Easter is determined by the moon and
usually falls between March 22 and April 25, according to a formula
designed by the Council of Nicaea in 325.
