Worksheet 2: About the Author
William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 23 April 1616) was an English poet
and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the
world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard

of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets,
two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into
every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other
playwright.
Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18 he married
Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith.
Between 1585 and 1592 he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and
part owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the
King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three
years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been
considerable speculation about such matters as his sexuality, religious beliefs, and
whether the works attributed to him were written by others.
Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1613. His early plays
were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and
artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. Next he wrote mainly tragedies until about
1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest
examples in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known
as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published
in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime, and in 1623 two of his
former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic
works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare's.
Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did
not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century

The teacher will ask some questions to check comprehension:

When was he born?
Where was he born? The teacher will show sts a map of England for them to see where
Stratford is.
How many of his works have survived?
When did he produce most of his work?
What genre were his early plays?
What was The First Folio?
What do other writers think about him?
Now that we know some facts about the author, we are going to read a story entitled
Othello, which is based on the play with the same name.

-3-

Literature Spell Melisa Rinaldi

Before reading the story, the teacher will provide sts with some quotations taken from
the text and they will have to imagine what the story is about. They will work in groups
of three and they will have 10 minutes to go over the quotes and discuss them. Each
group will have to think of a possible plot. Afterwards, each group will have to report
their ideas to the whole class.
Worksheet 3: Read the following passages taken from the story and imagine what the
story is about and who the characters are.
I know, said Othello, that my wife is beautiful; loves company and good times; is
free in speech; sings, plays and dances well: but where goodness is, these qualities are
good. I must have proof before...

Among all the generals friends, no one possessed Othellos trust more completely than
Cassio. Michael Cassio was a young soldier from Florence. He was bright, goodlooking and well spoken, favourite qualities with women.

If you are telling the truth, said Othello (to Iago), I will not rest until my revenge has
swallowed them up. First, to prove your loyalty, I expect Cassio...
After sharing the different plots, we will start dealing with the story in order to check
whether sts prediction were close to the story or not.
During the first period that we deal with the story, the teacher will ask sts to read the
first 2 pages of Othello in class. Sts will have to concentrate on two of the characters,
namely Othello and Desdemona, and they will have to say what we get to know about
these characters in these pages. For homework, the teacher will ask sts to read the rest of
the story

ANALYSIS OF THE STORY

Checking predictions

-4-

Literature Spell Melisa Rinaldi

Once sts have read the story at home, we will work on the analysis of the characters and
plot in general. First, the teacher will ask sts if the predictions that they made the
previous day were close to the story or not.
Analysis of Characters
Secondly, sts will be provided with a list of adjectives (Worksheet 4) and they will work
in groups of 3. Each group will have to focus on one of the four main characters
(Othello, Desdemona, Cassio and Iago) and will have to choose the adjectives that could
be used to describe each of them. Sts will also have to find evidence in the story to
support their choices. Once all the groups have finished, they will report to the rest of
the class.
Global Comprehension questions
The teacher will ask sts questions so that they can talk about the plot, the setting and the
main conflict, for instance:
1. Where did the story take place? (The teacher will show sts a map for them to see
where Venice and Cyprus are)
2. Why did Brabantio object to Othellos marriage to his daughter?
3. What kind of person was Othello? Why was he different from the rest? (Aim:
Moor)
4. Why did Desdemona marry Othello?
5. Did Brabantio know of his daughters wedding?
6. What did Brabantio do when he found out the news?
7. Why did the state of Venice have urgent need of Othellos services? What was
the problem in Cyprus?
8. What did the senators do with Othello? Was he charged with any offences in the
end?
9. Who was Michael Cassio? What did he do when Othello was courting
Desdemona?
10. Who was Iago? Why was he angry at Othello? What was his opinion of Cassio?
11. Why did Iago hate Othello?
12. Which was the most unbearable pain which could trouble the mind of man
according to Iago?

-5-

Literature Spell Melisa Rinaldi

18. How did Desdemona die?
19. How did Othello die?
20. What happened to Iago?
21. What part do jealousy and revenge play in the story?
22. Which character do you feel most sympathy for? Why?

Which of these statements are true, and which are false? Correct those
that are false.

respected general.
2. The senators send Othello to Cyprus because they do not think
