Course content
Founded in 2004, the three-year CE doctoral
module rounds off the Computational
Engineering study programme in Erlangen. This
International Postgraduate Programme (IPP) was
established as a part of the Graduate School of
the Faculty of Engineering, which embraces all
formal aspects of the doctoral programmes.
This doctoral programme is designed to
promote and foster the training of young
researchers in the interdisciplinary area of
engineering, computer sciences and
mathematics and, furthermore, to qualify them
for independent scientific work in
multidisciplinary engineering fields. This
postgraduate research education is designed to
lead to attainment of the prestigious German
doctoral degree Dr-Ing. It is offered to students
who have specialised in Computational
Engineering in their graduate studies, or to
engineering students with a particular
knowledge in computer sciences and
mathematics.
Central to this module is the doctoral fellow's
solution of a scientific problem posed within one
of the participating groups' research
programmes. The research is supervised by two
mentors. As an educational supplement
supporting the research, the programme
includes lectures, courses, and seminars which

students
The Student Advice and Career Service (IBZ) will
provide you with detailed information on all the
important topics relating to your studies. You
will receive information on possible study
courses and subject combinations, application
requirements and procedures and find support
with organising your study programme and
complying with all assessment/examination
requirements. Advice is given on settling in at

Accommodation
Erlangen and Nuremberg are attractive cities
with historic flair and modern infrastructure.
FAU will do its best to assist new students in
finding accommodation. However, the housing
market is quite tight.
The student halls in Erlangen and Nuremberg
can only provide accommodation for a small
number of students. For more information, visit
http://www.fau.eu/international/international-ap
plicant
s/important-information [<a href=]
/accommodation-2"
target="_blank">http://www.fau.eu/international/internationalapplicant
s/important-information/accommodation-2
Another option is the private housing market. If
you extend your search to neighbouring towns
such as Frth and Forchheim, your choice of
accommodation is much larger and rents are
lower while the well-developed local public
transport system means you're never far away
from the university.
In addition, there are flats shared with other
students or sublet rooms. This option not only
saves you money but also helps you settle in
quickly and make friends in your new home.
A good starting point for your search are
specialised websites and the university's notice
boards. Detailed information on finding
accommodation is available at

About the university
Founded in 1743, Friedrich Alexander University
Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) is one of the top
research universities in Germany with almost
40,000 students. With five faculties, the
university offers classes and research
opportunities in a wide range of subjects. At
Master's level in particular, many subjects are
taught entirely in English.
FAU is a leading academic institution with
internationally recognised, interdisciplinary
research in a variety of fields, including: i) new
materials and processes, ii) optics and optical
technologies, iii) molecular life science and
medicine, iv) health technology, v) electronics,
information, and communication, vi) energy,
environment, and climate, vii) language,
culture, region, and viii) cohesion,
transformation, innovation in law and
economics.
FAU receives special federal funding for the
following high-profile research initiatives: the
Cluster of Excellence "Engineering of Advanced
Materials", the Erlangen Graduate School in
Advanced Optical Technologies, the "Medical
Valley" Leading Edge Cluster in Health
Technology, and the International Consortium
for Research in the Humanities "Fate, Freedom
and Prognostication".
FAU offers outstanding research conditions for
graduate students, doctoral candidates, and
young researchers. It provides a state-of-the-art
scientific infrastructure as well as intensive
research mentoring and support. FAU students
receive world-class training in an inspiring
environment with access to exciting
international exchange opportunities and
excellent career prospects. The university's
global vision is exemplified by its successful FAU
Busan Campus in South Korea.
FAU benefits from collaborations with other
renowned research institutions in Erlangen and
Nuremberg, including the Max Planck Institute
for the Science of Light, the newly founded
Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nuremberg for
Renewable Energy, and two Fraunhofer

Institutes.

About the city
FAU is located at the heart of the metropolitan
region of Nuremberg, one of Germany's most
dynamic economic areas and home to more
than 3.5 million people. As a powerhouse for
innovation, the university contributes to
identifying and addressing technological, social,
and cultural challenges.
Both Erlangen with its approximately 100,000
inhabitants and Nuremberg with a population of
half a million people are safe and attractive
cities with a high standard of living, offering
ample opportunities for sports, cultural, and
leisure activities.
Students and young researchers from all over
the world as well as employees of globally
operating companies create a vibrant,
international atmosphere. The region's lively
cultural scene and events such as Erlangen's
famous beer festival ('Bergkirchweih'),
Nuremberg's world-renowned Christmas market
('Christkindlesmarkt') and FAU's
'Schlossgartenfest' attract visitors from near
and far. The medieval city of Nuremberg,
famous for Albrecht Drer and the Nuremberg
Renaissance, continues to thrill tourists all year
round.
Nature enthusiasts will find Franconian
Switzerland - a paradise for climbing, mountain
biking and hiking - just a stone's throw away.
FAU is firmly rooted in the metropolitan region
of Nuremberg as an important partner for
companies, industry, politics, culture, and
society in general. FAU graduates profit from the
region's perfect conditions for starting their
professional or academic career.
The biggest strengths of the metropolitan region
are transport and logistics, information and
communication, medicine and pharmaceutics,
energy, power electronics and environment,
new materials, automation technology, and
innovative services. Branches of all big banks
and insurance companies are located in the
region. Major multinational companies based in
Nuremberg and Erlangen include household
names like Adidas, Audi, Bosch, Nestl Schller,
Novartis Pharma, and Siemens. Also, many
small and medium-sized businesses, for
example, in health technology, offer a wide
range of professional opportunities in the region.

FAU's cooperation partners include globally

operating companies such as Siemens, Audi,
and Adidas, to name only three. Collaborations
with regional and national companies from all
lines of business allow for a direct transfer of
research results. Subject-specific placements,
theses, and internships with companies allow
FAU students to gain insight into different
occupational fields as well as important
practical experience. This is why the highly
qualified graduates of FAU are sought-after
employees both in Germany and abroad.
