Introduction

The area of the fieldtrip is considered range of area from Sri Iskandar and
Kinta Valley till Cameron Highland.

The point of the trip was to see some real life examples of some of the things
that we have studied over the course of this semester. Actually, being able to
see examples such as fault plane, bedding, metamorphism, and some types
of rocks really helped me understand a little more. This trip, lead by Assoc.
Prof. Dr. Chow Weng Sum, made several stops along the 78.03 kilometers
way from Sri Iskandar to Ringlet, Cameron Highland; of which include Sri
Iskandar, Batu Gajah, Simpang Pulai Quarry, abandoned quarry on the way
to Ringlet, and Ringlet landslide area.

2.0 Objectives
And the objectives of this Geology Field Trip:
Students will name and identify the three rock types; igneous,
sedimentary and metamorphic.
Students will classify the rocks found out from the field trip spot.
Students will be introduced to some basic geology process like fault,
fracture and so on.
Students will explore the methodology of calculating bedding in
dangerous zone.
Students will observe effect of weathering on some type of rocks.

3.0 Observations
1st spot

On location 42257.82 North and 1005634.73 East, in the region of Sri

Iskandar, there is some joint and fracture rock features reported from this
area. The region covered with right and left hill along the traffic.
More information is as follows:
-

Bedding measurement : 335/60 West

Rock features exist :

2nd spot

Next spot is on 42824.80 North heading 1010414.78 East, near Batu

Gajah town heading to Kellies Castle on Batu Gajah-Gopeng Interchange.
Metamorphic rocks are formed when heat and pressure, and chemical
reaction
deep within the Earth alter the mineral content and/or structure of preexisting
rock without melting it
-Intro to Basic Geology, by Assoc Prof Dr Chow Weng Sum

The information at this spot is as follows:

-

Rock type :

Bedding measurement :

**check for how volatile metamorphic rocks are, in CD attached in

Appendix A (video).

3rd spot

Sedimentary rocks are found when loose sediments (sand, slit or clay) are
laid down and thin, these sediments may be thousands
of feet thick
-Intro to Basic Geology by Assoc. Prof Dr. Chow Weng Sum

At 43206.40 North heading 1010853.32 East, Simpang Pulai Granite &

Marble Quarry near Man Sing Kung and Megah Jaya Industries Sdn Bhd, very
interesting observations found out there.

Besides, Dr Chow who is our

professor-in-charge for this field
trip gave a lot of information here.
On how things can be so
dangerous if not well taken care of
and so on. Also included in his
sayings, about the magnificent
process of how marble are formed
beneath the Earth in this quarry.
From my observations, information
is as follows:
-

Rock type :
1. Biochemical sedimentary rock,
Limestone can be used to
make roads or cut into big
blocks said Dr Chow on that
day.
2. Granite rock
3. Marble

That limestone hill can be metamorphosis by this granite to yield

marble
for the quarry
-Said by Dr Chow, April 4, 2009, at the 3rd spot of the fieldtrip.

Rock features exist :

1. Karst steep and vertical cliff.

2. Overhang may cause by fall of undercuft (dangerous type and

severe damage caused if fall down)
3. Undercuft cause by nearby blastered area and experience several
shocks.

4. Not-well-terraced if leave it and not well-taken-care-of, it may slide

down.
Gravel cover with corundum may yield a 9 MOH`s scale just the
same as Sapphire`s hardness
-told by Dr Chow Weng Sum at the 3rd spot
4th spot

Next station is the abandoned granite quarry on the Simpang Pulai-Ringlet

Interchange. Location at 43222.84 North and 1011847.72 East.
Here, weathering may be varying. But mostly, at just change the color of
the rock exposed to sunlight and rain.

Rock type: Igneous rock and biotite (granite).

Rock features exist:

Bedding measurement :

Methodology
Calculating angle from
afar. For safety.

Extra Info gathered : In the granite sample gathered by Dr Chow, mega

crysts found embedded inside it.

5th Spot

This last spot located at 43448.62 North heading 1011928.04 East.

This view above is elevated from 4005 feet bird-eye view.

Landslide is reported to be
here 2 years ago
-Said by the UTP`s bus driver at 5th spot

From our observation, terracing had been done, yet it is not well done (not
proper). It can be seen at the top of the hill, erosion process is carried out
by the Mother Nature.

Soil is to loosen down and sustainable for another landslide as the spot is
humid and quite high in level of rain per day.
Cutting of the top of the hill may cause
danger if no serious quick-action is taken care-of time to time
- by Dr Chow at the 5th Spot

Rock type : Graphite

Rock features : Graphanite Schitz (layer by layer of different type of
Graphanite)

4.0 Conclusion
The most important thing can be picked up during the field trip was
that there are some of the basic geology
process such as fault and fracture which may
yield some features like overhang, undercuft,
volatile rock and so on.
But what can I say here is that humans
nowadays, mostly, don`t care of the
geological process happened around us.
They just explore the Mother Nature, take
It`s treasure and it is done, without
considering how they affect It so much and
bring hazardous state to others.
For the close up, most of this learning
objectives
for this field trip are successfully earn me
best. Thanks
to Assoc. Prof Dr Chow Weng Sum for he shared his high-experience with us,
and to all who participated in this field trip.

The process in effect today is shaping the landscape of the future.

Metamorphism, faults, bedding, dip and strike, they all just move
too slowly for us to see. So it is us to take a good care for them
