Student Guide

This document describes the CIG virtual machine (VM), how to install it, and the
basics of how to use it. The CIG VM is intended to help beginning geodynamics
researchers learn how to use ASPECT, Calypso, and other codes in a prearranged
environment. All necessary libraries and supplemental applications are included.

Installation and Usage Instructions
1. Install Virtual Box 4.3.12. The Windows and OS X versions of Virtual Box are
included on the memory stick. To download Virtual Box 4.3.12 for a
UNIX/Linux platform, please refer to
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

2. Import the CIG VM Appliance.
o Either double click on the CIG_CIDER_2014_VM.ova file, or open
VirtualBox and choose "Import Appliance" from the File menu.

a. Choose the number of CPUs and amount of RAM for the virtual
machine. We recommend using the same number of CPUs as your
computer has, and half the RAM. Click Import. Importing the VM will
take about 10-20 minutes depending on your system.
b. You can ignore warnings about auto-capture. If VirtualBox asks about
reassigning MAC addresses, just click OK.

3. Set up a shared clipboard. Click on the Settings button for the VM. Under
General, Advanced, set Shared Clipboard to Bidirectional. This will let
you copy/paste and between your computer and the VM.

4. Set up a shared folder between the VM and your computer. This will let you
move files from the VM to your computer and vice-versa.
a. Under the Settings, choose Shared Folders and click the Add Shared
Folder button.

b. Choose a folder on your computer (or create a new one) as the Folder
Path. Ensure Auto-mount is checked. Make sure the Folder Name is
CIG_SHARED. Click OK. Further instructions are in Step 8.

5. Start the VM and wait for Ubuntu (the operating system) to start up. On
some systems the VM may fail to start due an error related to VT-x/AMD-V.
In this event please see the organizers for help.

6. Once Ubuntu has started, you should see the following desktop.
Search
File Manager
Firefox
System Settings
ParaView
Terminal
Text Editor

7. To ensure the shared folder is set up correctly, open the Terminal. Create a
file in the shared folder (e.g. touch ~/shared/test_file) and make sure it
appears in the corresponding folder on your computer.
a. The command to manually mount the shared folder is sudo mount --
bind /media/sf_CIG_SHARED /home/cig/shared but you should not
need to type this.

8. In case you need to make any changes, the username and password for the
VM are cig and cig (without quotes).
