This
document
describes
the
CIG
virtual
machine
(VM),
how
to
install
it,
and
the
basics
of
how
to
use
it.
The
CIG
VM
is
intended
to
help
beginning
geodynamics
researchers
learn
how
to
use
ASPECT,
Calypso,
and
other
codes
in
a
prearranged
environment.
All
necessary
libraries
and
supplemental
applications
are
included.

this
README
contains

files,

Instructions
1. Install
Virtual
Box
4.3.12.
The
Windows
and
OS
X
versions
of
Virtual
Box
are
included
on
the
memory
stick.
To
download
Virtual
Box
4.3.12
for
a
UNIX/Linux
platform,
please
refer
to
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
2. Import
the
CIG
VM
Appliance.
o Either
double
click
on
the
CIG_CIDER_2014_VM.ova
file,
or
open
VirtualBox
and
choose
"Import
Appliance"
from
the
File
menu.
a. Choose
the
number
of
CPUs
and
amount
of
RAM
for
the
virtual
machine.
We
recommend
using
the
same
number
of
CPUs
as
your
computer
has,
and
half
the
RAM.
Click
Import.
Importing
the
VM
will
take
about
10-20
minutes
depending
on
your
system.
b. You
can
ignore
warnings
about
auto-capture.
If
VirtualBox
asks
about
reassigning
MAC
addresses,
just
click
OK.
3. Set
up
a
shared
clipboard.
Click
on
the
Settings
button
for
the
VM.
Under
General,
Advanced,
set
Shared
Clipboard
to
Bidirectional.
This
will
let
you
copy/paste
and
between
your
computer
and
the
VM.
4. Set
up
a
shared
folder
between
the
VM
and
your
computer.
This
will
let
you
move
files
from
the
VM
to
your
computer
and
vice-versa.
a. Under
the
Settings,
choose
Shared
Folders
and
click
the
Add
Shared
Folder
button.

a
folder
on
your
computer
(or
create
a
new
one)
as
the
Folder
Path.
Ensure
Auto-mount
is
checked.
Make
sure
the
Folder
Name
is
CIG_SHARED.
Click
OK.
Further
instructions
are
in
Step
8.
5. Start
the
VM
and
wait
for
Ubuntu
(the
operating
system)
to
start
up.
On
some
systems
the
VM
may
fail
to
start
due
an
error
related
to
VT-x/AMD-V.
In
this
event
please
see
the
organizers
for
help.
6. Once
Ubuntu
has
started,
you
should
see
the
following
desktop.
Search
File
Manager
Firefox
System
Settings
ParaView
Terminal
Text
Editor
7. To
ensure
the
shared
folder
is
set
up
correctly,
open
the
Terminal.
Create
a
file
in
the
shared
folder
(e.g.
touch
~/shared/test_file)
and
make
sure
it
appears
in
the
corresponding
folder
on
your
computer.
a. The
command
to
manually
mount
the
shared
folder
is
sudo
mount
--
bind
/media/sf_CIG_SHARED
/home/cig/shared
but
you
should
not
need
to
type
this.
8. In
case
you
need
to
make
any
changes,
the
username
and
password
for
the
VM
are
cig
and
cig
(without
quotes).
