Dance is a movement and the most beautiful movement in the world. All living beings
dance, including birds and animals. Human beings have a greater faculty than other living beings
because humans can think and dance while others dance because of need or genetics. Humans
can also dance intelligently.
Dance uses focused thinking. It can involve planning the dance with training to allow
enjoyment from the training. The body is the medium to interpret the thought process into
tangible and harmonized creation allowing both physical and mental movements.
Human movement is a holistic process that integrates the whole body in relation to space and
time. One of the basic needs of human beings is the ability to move effectively and efficiently
with the use of little energy. Human movements do not require special skills but may graduate to
higher and more skilled levels such as exercises and dance.
It is a biological requirement for human beings to allow sustenance of life and enable
individual to be part of a culture of a society. Movements also enable the body to develop
strength, power, and stamina through the action of the muscles. It makes exercise an important
need for a life of an individual to create a relationship between the mind and the muscles. There
are four principles of movement that include how people move, where they move, how they
move, and with whom with move (Rele 30).

Dance therapy works with other therapists such as physiotherapists towards the
rehabilitation of impaired individuals that have their faculties and senses damaged affecting their
normal, ordinary activities. Dance is a means of rehabilitation. It views dance as a beauty and joy
and also gives impaired individuals the hope of rehabilitation, for instance, it can be used in
facial paralysis. Different movement of the whole face moves to show several moods and
emotions. The different movement of organs is used to treat. They can be a movement of the
eyebrows, eyelids, eyeballs, cheeks, nostrils, mouth, lips, neck, head, and chin to express
emotions. A gentle and relaxing regime of daily exercises based on yoga, Pilates, and a healthy
touch such as a gentle massage of the afflicted area helps the muscle. Exercises offer a great help
after treatment to rehabilitation.
Dance and movement therapy help people who are living with dementia. Dementia
challenges have been highlighted in recent years. It is a problem that mainly affected the elderly.
However, young people also affected. It is estimated that 800,000 people are living with
dementia in the UK majority above 65years. The symptoms of dementia include loss of memory
and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. The cause is damage on the brain by
Alzheimers or a series of strokes. The symptoms worsen with time. An affected person also has
a problem of communication through spoken language leading to anxiety, frustration, irritability,
and isolation. Dance and movement therapy helps to overcome the communication barrier
(Malina 67).
Dance helps to direct expression and experience of oneself through the body. It is important
to communicate in therapy. Dance therapy helps the students to express emotions leading to an
increased feeling of wellbeing. It also helps to treat traumatized people. Psychiatrists used dance
therapy during World War II to treat traumatized soldiers. It also has uses in psychotherapy

action. When medicine and art are combined, they offer more benefits than when either is used
alone. They are used to treat dementia. There are now more health and art organizations joining
to offer alternative help to those with dementia.
Dance movements gave the ability to survive within the brain and body when other types
of cognition are lost. It helps to restore a person's full humanity and some cognitive capacity
.dance helps to prevent the onset of dementia and slow down the development of symptoms for
those living with dementia.
Dance and movement therapy focus on the mind and body connection through the use of
movement as a healing medium. Meditation can be used therapeutically to assist patients with
chronic pain and illness. It also helps mentally ill adults to be a medium of understanding
emotions because words cannot be spoken. Some patients do not speak verbally, but dance
therapy is used to allow them express emotions ( Wennerstrand 87). It also changes lives through
identification of roots of eating disorders enabling the recovery of the patients. It helps support
memory and socialization with the elderly.
Graduates can use their education to integrate dancer's knowledge of movement with
dance and movement theory. They acquire supervised hours for an advanced credential. They
can be licensed practitioners in their state. Dance majors in college may also take up a career as
Pilates or yoga teachers (Rivers 102).
