Bible Study Commentary

Commentary Genesis 1:20-23

1
Creatures: neh-fesh Soul, self, life, creature, person, desire, emotion, passion

The word for "creature" in hebrew is neh-fesh, which connotes creatures with
mind, will and emotion. Thus it is thought by some that only air-breathing
mammals such as dolphines, whales, porpoises, etc. were created on day 5 and not
fish. As to when fish were created, according to some, the Bible does not
specifically say, so where the Bible is silent so are they.
2
Birds: owph: flying creatures, fowl, insects, birds

owph: means to fly, normally of birds. It can refer to insects, but usually when
used in conjunction with sheres connoting "winged creeping thing" (e.g., Leviticus
11:20-23) Here at Genesis 1:20 some believe only birds (possibly bats also) were
created, not insects. (see Reasons.org "Genesis 1 - The Animals" click here.)

Genesis is not a detailed account of how God created every living organism on
earth, but a summary of the things he created. God does not specifically mention
the creation of flying insects, fungi, bacteria, and many other living things. But, we
know from many other scriptures (e.g., Exodus 20:11; John 1:3) that God is the
Creator of everything that exists.

Questions & Answers

Questions

1.What life form did Jah God create on the fifth day?
2.What does the word creature mean?
3.At Genesis 1:21 what are the “large sea creatures?”
4.What does the word “kind” mean?
5. What does “variety” mean?

Answers:

1. God created nonhuman souls, fish, reptiles, dinosaurs, whales.

2. Here “creature,” Hebrew: “nephesh” is taken from the root word Naphash
which means to take
breath, or breather. So these “creatures” are nonhuman souls or animals are
creatures that breath and
which have blood. (See Genesis 9:4 "But flesh with the life [nephesh, soul] of it,
the blood of it, you
shall not eat.")

3. The nonhuman "living creatures" or "living souls" that fly over the earth and
swim in the oceans
would also include sea monsters, or "large sea creatures", or large reptiles, or
dinosaurs, or according to
the King James Version “whales.” Genesis 1:21.

4. An easy way to define kind, is having the ability to breed. Example: A dog-kind
cannot breed with a

cat-kind.

5. Differing sorts or varieties can occur within kinds, example wolves, dingoes,
coyotes, or domestic
dogs are all of the same kind, but of differing sorts or varieties.
