There were several reasons why audience feedback was essential for the development of the
project:
‡It enabled our group to improve both the main task and the ancillary tasks
‡ It allowed us to identify how our target audience connected with our promotion pack
‡ It let us discover whether our promotion pack had its intended effect on our target audience

Audience feedback was split into two types of feedbacks:

1. ›ormal ± everything that was recorded i.e. questionnaires.

2. Informal ± mostly feedback that our group received through the construction process i.e.
Mrs Mcluckie frequently gave our group feedback on our whole promotion pack. This
feedback cannot be accurately quoted because it wasn¶t recorded.

The small-scale survey our group conducted for our rough cut was the earliest form of formal
feedback we obtained. We gave our target audience a mixture of quantitative and qualitative
questions in a form of a questionnaire to receive the advantages of both. Quantitative data
enabled our group to identify trends and statistics, whereas qualitative data allowed us to
receive more personal opinions and constructive criticism. Trends that we identified by
conducting this small-scale survey are as follows:

V Average Rating of Tension Levels = 3.8 out of 10

V Average Rating of Interest Levels in the film = 3.6 out of 10
V "nly 20 % of the respondents answered 'Yes' to the question 'Did the trailer leave a
lasting impression of you?'
V And 60 % of our respondents thought the trailer could exist in the real media world

These findings suggested to us that our teaser trailer wasn¶t effective enough for our target
audience. The qualitative responses enabled us to determine why. ›or example, Jamie
"verland said the trailer didn¶t leave a lasting impression because:

And furthermore, Michael Burrin gave us some helpful constructive criticism:

Both of these constructive criticisms helped us to improve our teaser trailer.

We changed the following in our teaser trailer because of our audience feedback:

1. Added tones from the AKM copyright free µHorror Soundtrack¶ to accentuate the
atmosphere
2. We changed the editing of µthe scare¶ to ensure it wasn¶t as predictable as Hayley
Mardle highlighted ³The scare was too obvious´
3. And we also re-filmed the µdemon face¶ because it was obvious to us that it wasn¶t
scaring viewers

The usefulness of audience feedback was confirmed when we showed the final cut to 10 new
individuals. There was an obvious improvement in our trends:

V Average Rating of Tension Levels = 8.9 out of 10

V Average Rating of Interest Levels in the film = 8.1 out of 10
V 90 % of the respondents answered 'Yes' to the question 'Did the trailer leave a lasting
impression of you?'
V And all of our respondents thought the trailer could exist in the real media world

We also discovered that our final teaser trailer had its intended effect on our target audience,
with Jake Clements commenting:

Sam Avery also confirmed the effectiveness of our teaser trailer by responding:

The effectiveness of audience feedback was also demonstrated by the feedback we received
during the construction process of our magazine and poster. As a consequence, all of the
feedback received during the production of the ancillary tasks were informal, so evidence
cannot be given. "ne advantage of receiving feedback in this way is that immediate
gratification can be gained. ›or example, fellow students (who fitted into our target audience)
gave us feedback on how to improve our magazine, one being ³I want to see more
promotions on the front cover´. Collecting it this way allowed us to modify the magazine
immediately.

After we produced our ancillary tasks we formally obtained audience feedback, which helped
us identify how our target audience was interacting with the print productions. ›or example,
Jamie "verland said the following about the poster:
›urthermore, Jack Reeves had this to say about the magazine front cover:

If I were to improve our audience feedback in our project I would have liked to acquired
some formal feedback on the ancillary tasks during the production process. As Jack Reeves
highlighted, the father¶s face on the magazine front cover ³looks too happy´ which could
potentially damage its effectiveness at selling itself and the film. However, this has its
advantages because it demonstrated to me the importance of audience feedback. "ur teaser
trailer feedback and our ancillary task¶s feedback confirmed that audience feedback can be
used to develop the effectiveness of media products, especially its ability to attract its target
audience.
