Unity through leadership

Introduction

The Movement is a unifying leadership experience that brings high schools

together to raise $1,000,000.

The plan is to inspire 2,000 schools to raise $500. All together, the
$1,000,000 raised in unison will be donated to Haiti.

Reaching 2,000 Schools
The combined effort of DECA State Officers and the DECA National Officer team, the
use of social media, a website, and a promotional video will be key to promoting The
Movement to 2,000 schools.

2,000 schools (mostly via DECA chapters)      X     $500

                                                                $1,000,000

Social Media Efforts and Website

Facebook is the primary vehicle for The Movement’s social media efforts. The Facebook
group for The Movement can be found here. Already, this group has brought in over 70
members. The majority of the members are State Officers, and the following
states/countries are already represented: OK, TX, OH, FL, CA, CO, MI, MO, MA, OR,
NH, WA, MT, PA, and Canada. The group serves as a useful platform for
communication and coordination, with the ability to message all the members at one
time.

Once The Movement has an official financial sponsor, a website will be posted online
that shows the plan described in this document as well as the new information about our

2
financial sponsor, donation methods, merchandise, etc. Until then, this document is
posted online via Scribd (http://www.scribd.com/doc/29203220/The-Movement), and
updates are made personally to each member through Facebook messaging or general
announcements on the Facebook group page when needed.

The Promotional Video

The promotional video will be filmed by Thursday, April 1st. This video is designed to:

1) Briefly inform the viewer about The Movement’s purpose and plan
2) Provide simple yet effective fundraisers that can quickly raise $500
3) Provide information about where to donate the funds, who to contact with a
question, and the link to the Facebook group.

This video will be posted on YouTube and promoted through The Movement’s Facebook
group, each participating state’s Facebook group, each participating state’s chapters, and
through other potential venues.
Please note that the video won’t be released until we have a confirmed financial sponsor.

Getting State Officer Support

Before the plan to reach all of the states is described, it’s important to note that some
teams won’t join without DECA Inc. first supporting this Movement.

This is the plan:

1) Have each of the state officers in the Facebook group contact one State President from
a non-participating state (or two). A group of 70+ members, the majority being State
Officers, can reach all 50 State Presidents within 1-2 weeks.

2) Have the National Team encourage the State Officer teams in their region to join.

With the State Officers on board, the ability to promote The Movement within each state
will be greatly enhanced. The state’s chapters can be emailed, the state’s Facebook
group/page can promote The Movement, the chapters may be more encouraged to join,
etc. Once a State Team is ready to carry out the Movement in their state, the promotional
video will be released and these opportunities will be pursued.

3
The Role of Each School
The schools will raise funds through either a DECA chapter or their own group.
Fundraiser ideas that simply and quickly raise $500 will be provided. The funds will be
sent to DECA Inc., unless an alternative method is preferable or necessary. DECA Inc.
will also donate the funds to the charity. The following is an overview of the fundraisers:

1) 50 people x $10 = $500. Have 25 members find 2 people who wish to donate
$10. Since numbers vary, this could bring in anywhere from $250 to $1,500
and beyond in a short amount of time. This method was used by a History
class from Prior Lake High School in Minnesota. $1,500 was raised in the first
two days. $3,500 was totaled in 3 days (article link).

2) Pack-A-Lunch: have members (and other people

from school) bring a sack lunch to school and donate
the money they would've used on going out to eat. This
idea was borrowed from The Movement’s informal
partner, The Pack-A-Lunch Campaign.

3) Penny drive: keep a jar for students to dump change into.

4) Merchandise: Sell shirts, lanyards, wristbands, and the like through an

online store. Note: designs have not been made. Once a financial sponsor
is obtained, a t-shirt printing company such as Broken Arrow will be
approached for sponsorship of t-shirt printing. Other companies will
be approached for other merchandise as well.

The intent of these fundraisers is to be very simple, but still able to raise $500 or more in
a short amount of time.

2,000 schools x $500 = $1,000,000 for Haiti

*The donation method will be discussed with the financial sponsor and posted online
once decided upon. Likely methods include checks and Purchase Orders.

4
The Charity
The charity we have unofficially chosen to support is Compassion International.
However, we acknowledge that the highly Christian background of this charity may not
be desirable for such a diverse organization. The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund will be
officially chosen if a secular alternative is more desirable.

The Vision
But why The Movement? Why is this even worth doing?

First and foremost: for Haiti. Wrought with destruction and devastation, this country
needs a friend to help lift it back on its feet. We want to be there during its time of need.

This is also for the massive potential of leadership we high school students hold when we
unite and work together. The Movement hardly even samples our true potential, but
future leaders may grasp this idea and turn it into something truly revolutionary.

Finally, this is also to recognize the organizations out there that promote an environment
for high school students to lead. The only reason this vision is even alive today is because
of DECA. The world needs to understand that our potential isn’t reached solely through a
formal education, but also through the motivating and inspiring organizations that fuel
the coming generations through opportunities to lead, volunteer, build socially, and chase
our dreams.

5
The Potential Role of DECA Inc.
DECA Inc. is needed to play a vital role in this Movement.

The most important need of all is an entity that can collect donations, keep track of
them, and donate them to the charity.

The following is a list of other actions that would help tremendously:

 Endorsement by the National DECA Team
o Promotion through social media outlets
o A quick, supportive video from members of the National Team to
encourage others to join
 Promotion on DECA.org website
 Use of DECA Images to sell merchandise (unless a different method is preferable)

It is my sincere hope that DECA Inc. partners with this DECA-spearheaded Movement,
and by doing so, inspire unity through leadership.
