alling the materials on this CD. These instructions are also in IV. INSTALLATION
INSTRUCTIONS, below.

* DRJAVA. A simple, free Java development environment. Two versions are provided
: Windows versions compatible with Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4 and 1.5.
* INTRO-PROG-JAVA. Sample programs and media files.

also contains Squeak, the environment that MediaTools runs on top of. When you
run MediaTools, Squeak runs automatically.
IV. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: Before installing, please review the System Requirements in the book's "Us
ing the Student CD" appendix.
STEP 1: CHECK JAVA
Begin by checking whether a compatible version of Java is already installed on
your computer. In Windows:
1. Display a Windows command prompt. (To do so, choose Start, Run; enter cmd in
the Run dialog box, and press Enter.
2. At the Windows command prompt, type
java -version
If Java is installed, your computer will display the current version.
If you only have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) but not the development
environment (JDK), you will still need to install the development environment.
You can determine whether you have a Java Development Environment by searching
your computer for the file tools.jar.
STEP 2: INSTALL JAVA
Before installing Java, make sure you are running a version of Windows that is
compatible with the version of Java you plan to install, and has been updated
with any service packs required by Java.
For example, Java 5 (1.5) will run on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or higher;
Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 3 or higher; Windows Server 2003;
Windows ME; and Windows 98, Second Edition. For more information on system
requirements, see the About the CD-ROM disk and http://java.sun.com/j2se.
The accompanying CD-ROM contains the following two Windows versions of Java:

* 1.42 _08
* 5.0 (also known as "1.5") Update 5
If you already have a newer version of Java (including the JDK Java development
environment) on your computer, you need not install a version of Java from this
CD-ROM.
If you do need to install Java, follow these steps:
1. Browse to the JAVA folder on the CD-ROM, and then browse to the subfolder
containing the version of Java you wish to install (1.5 or 1.4)
2. Double-click the .exe file containing the Java installer. For example, if you
are installing Java 5 ("1.5"), double-click jdk-1_5_05-windows-i586.exe. The
installer begins running.
3. Review and accept the license agreement, and click Next.
4. The installer displays the Java components it intends to install, and the
locations where it plans to install them. To specify that a component not be
installed, click on it and choose Don't Install This Feature Now. To change the
location where components will be installed, click the Change button; browse to
the location where you want to install Java; choose OK, and click Next.
5. The Custom Setup dialog box opens, permitting you to adjust program features
and where they will be installed. Once you're done reviewing this dialog box and
making any adjustments, click Next.
6. The Browser Registration dialog box appears. Java offers to register itself
within each of your Web browsers, so you can run Java programs within each
browser. Click Next. Installation proceeds; this may take a few minutes.
7. The installer tells you it has successfully installed Java. Click Finish.
STEP 3: COPY DRJAVA
1. Open the DRJAVA folder corresponding to the version of Java now installed on
your computer. For example, if you've installed Java 1.5, browse to
DrJava\1.5\windows, and open that folder.
2. Copy the drjava.exe file to your hard drive. For example, if you're
installing DrJava 1.5, copy drjava-stable-20050814-2234.exe.
TIP: If you want to create a desktop shortcut for DrJava, right-click on the
.exe file you've just copied to your hard disk, and choose Send To, Desktop
(Create Shortcut). You might wish to rename the shortcut Windows creates.
STEP 3: COPY MEDIATOOLS AND SQUEAK
1. Open the MEDIATOOLS folder.
2. Select the Windows-MediaTools and Documentation subfolders, and copy them to
your hard disk.
STEP 4: COPY SAMPLE PROGRAMS AND MEDIA
1. Select the INTRO-PROG-JAVA folder and copy it to your hard disk.
STEP 5: LAUNCH THE SOFTWARE

A. Launch DrJava
To launch DrJava, double-click on the icon corresponding to the DrJava
executable file you copied to your hard drive. (Or, if you optionally created a
desktop shortcut, double-click on the shortcut).
If you are asked to locate the tools.jar file, click Yes. Then, browse to the
location where that file is installed. If you haven't changed the installation
location, you can typically find it as follows: browse to C:\Program
Files\Java\; browse to the subfolder named after the version of Java you've just
installed (for example jdk1.5.0_1.0.5); browse to the lib subfolder; choose
tools.jar; and click Open.
NOTE: If you are running Windows Firewall, your firewall may block you from
using Java 2 Platform Standard Edition. Click Unblock to allow yourself to use
J2SE.
Once DrJava is open, you need to give it quick access to the sample programs and
media files included with this book. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Choose Edit, Preferences. The Preferences dialog box opens.
2. In the Extra Classpath text box, enter the entire path corresponding to the
folder bookClasses. For example, if you copied the entire intro-prog-java folder
into the main directory on your C:\ drive, enter:
c:/intro-prog-java/bookClasses
NOTE: If you are using a different integrated development environment, follow
that IDE's steps to provide the correct classpath as well.
3. By default, the media path is set to c:\intro-prog\java\mediasources\. You
can set the media path to another directory by starting DrJava and typing the
following in the interactions pane:
FileChooser.setMediaPath("d:/media/")
where "d" is the drive name and "media" is the folder name. Note that the final
slash is required.
Once you've typed the appropriate media path, press enter. This stores the
location, so DrJava will look there in the future.
For more information about running DrJava, display the software's help system.
Choose Help, QuickStart to get started, or choose Help, Help for more detailed
information.
B. Launch MediaTools
1. In Windows Explorer, browse to the location on your hard drive where you
copied the Windows-MediaTools folder, and open the folder.
2. Drag the mediatools-v5-sa.image file onto the SqueakVM.exe file.
