Company Profile
BioDigitalValley is a company dedicated to invent, develop and
commercialize new solutions and services in the bioinformatics field. It
is part of the R.G.I. group, a software house participated by the equity
fund 21 Investimenti (Benetton).
The Companys lead product, ProteinQuest, was released early in
2012. ProteinQuest is a new platform for biomedical data retrieval and
analysis, useful for pharmaceutical discovery and as well as business
intelligence in the biomedical sector. First customers include academic
research institutions, discovery groups in pharmaceutical companies
and licensing officers from the same.
The second product, iMOLE, is a specialized platform designed to
store, analyze and retrieve experimental images from both research
labs and scientific literature. Currently, iMOLE has been customized for
an academic research group working on 2D-gel electrophoresis data.
Discovery and Innovation Capabilities
The Companys discovery capability, mainly focused in the field of
informatics applications for research in the pharmaceutical industry,
draws on years of experience and the world class standing of its
informatics and programming expert, as well as on several academic
collaborations at the border between several hot topics in informatics
research (cloud and grid applications, semantic indexing) and
molecular biology (system biology).

Collaborations
In the frame of the IMAGE project, Biodigitalvalley headed a
collaboration involving the Informatics Dept. of the University of Milano,
aimed to the development of new tools for the retrieval and reutilization
of proteomic images from the scientific literature (project value: about
900 k euro).
After that, Biodigitalvalley collaborated with the Neurology dept. of the
Valle dAosta hospital and with the University of Insubria on a pilot
study using Biodigitalvalley technology to find and validate molecular
biomarkers in Parkinsons disease (ParIS project, about 1.5 M. euro).
Currently, Biodigitalvalley is starting a collaboration including the
Istituto Mario Boella (TO) and the Italian Interuniversitary Consortium
for Informatic (CINI) aiming to develop cloud applications and an open
source platform for the pharmaceutical discovery.
The Company has also been recently contacted by the University of
Barcelona and by the French CNRS to explore possible collaborations
in the same sector, with the goal of setting up a EU-FP7 project
proposal.

Overview of Product and Services

Biodigitalvalley currently has one lead product, ProteinQuest, which
has already entered the market. The second product is iMOLE, a
customizable platform for experimental image storage and analysis,
was acquired by the first customer by the end of 2012. Additionally, the
Company sells its consulting services to several licensing and research
groups in the biopharmaceutical industry.

ProteinQuest is a new web

application for biomedical data
retrieval and analysis. This new
platform for biodiscovery smoothly integrates data from scientific
allineamento
literature, data repositories and biological images. Currently
ProteinQuest holds more than 14 million indexed abstracts, 7.7 million
images, 1.8 million selected patents, 250.000 clinical trial abstracts and
10 billion binary relationships. Literature information can be obtained
easily by using two different query types: by inserting free key words
and by guided construction of a boolean query using cured ontologies.
ProteinQuest helps in finding relevant insights into article abstracts and
image captions, as well as clinical trials data, producing more specific
and comprehensive search results compared to other data mining
platforms. ProteinQuest can be used also to search for Patent
abstracts and claims and for analysis of the resulting information by
means of all dictionaries/ontologies available.
Additionally ProteinQuest provides complex network models to deepen
the understanding of your data. Networks generated by ProteinQuest
reveal binding relationships between several types of concepts and
biological entities, as well as between people, institutions, companies,
etc.
This product is currently sold on the basis of an annual license, with a
different pricing model for academic or commercial users.
Biodigitalvalleys second product,
iMOLE, is a specialized platform
designed to store, analyze and
prova
retrieve experimental images from both research labs and scientific
literature. Currently, it is devoted to the storage and analysis of
proteomic 2D gel images and data, but can be customized to
accommodate any type of experimental technique. Users can annotate
experimental images and compare their own experiments to those
reported in the literature, as well as running specialized meta-analysis
of literature and experimental images.
The first version of this product has just been launched.
Services
Biodigitalvalley makes use of its proprietary software instruments,
network analysis tools and automatic data retrieval ability to answer
complex questions arising from researchers working in the following
sectors:
-Pharmaceutical discovery and preclinical research
-Business intelligence for pharmaceutical licensing
-IT infrastructures
Among our top customers, we count Actelion, Sigma Tau, Menarini
IFR, Angelini A.C.R.A.F., Recordati.
