TRAINING PROGRAMME ON 5S HOUSEKEEPING TECHNIQUES

5 S CAN BE DEFINED AS

Seiri (Proper Arrangement and clearing up)


Look around your work area and ask yourself Is it really necessary for all items to
be there?
Separate O.K. re workable and rejected items.
Rework there workable items and disposes of the rejected items.

Seition (Systematic Arrangement)


Items must be placed in pre-fixed locations so that they are easily accessible and can
be easily used. Make sure that items can be clearly identified by labeling them
properly.
3.
Seiso ( Spic & Span)
Seiso means cleaning the work place and all the machinery by ourselves.
4.
Seiketsu (Serene Atmosphere)
Even a clean work place with proper location and proper arrangement will soon
become dirty if Seiri, Seiton and Seiso are not continuously repeated. Let us prevent
problems by keeping things standardized and maintaining a good Environment.
5.
Shitsuke (Stick to Self Discipline)
Everyone should be disciplined to follow strictly the rules and maintain standards
While Working. For example let us adhere to the timings and let us follow the
Prescribed Operation standards. Everybody should wear shoes for safety. Advantages
of 5 - S By thoroughly enforcing 5-S in each area.
Operations can be performed without error, proceeding in a well regulated
fashion, Resulting in fewer defective items thereby increasing the overall quality of
product.
Operations can be performed safely and comfortably, reducing the chances of
accidents.
Machinery and equipment can be carefully maintained, reducing the number of
breakdowns.
Operations can be performed efficiently, eliminating waste thereby increasing the
efficiency and productivity.

How To Achieve ' 5-S '


Every employee can achieve '5-S' very easily by having a close look at his work place.
He is to ensure that:
5 LEVELS OF HOUSE KEEPING
LEVEL 1 - Floor is full of unwanted material
LEVEL 2 - Clutter found by the walls
LEVEL 3 - Factory is clean but tools & material disorganized
LEVEL 4 - Storage area, m / c are clean & material organized
LEVEL 5 - Factory is immaculate
LEVEL 1 OF HOUSE KEEPING

Work area is level 1 of house keeping if cigarette butts.


Scraps of paper
Tools (Under use)
Unused tools
Obsolete documents
Unused equipment, m/c etc.
Are scattered around all over the place.
CORRECITIVE ACTION FOR LEVEL 1
(a) Look at all horizontal surface
(b) Examine the work floor and eliminate all garbages and non-essential tools &
Storage.
Examine the floor corners to corner and from wall to wall and eliminate unwanted
things.
(d) If something has no definite plan of use throw it out and sell it to the competitor to
clutter their work.
(e) Make a definite place for all tools and parts that are on the floor.
HINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Do not put any thing directly on the floor.
LEVEL 2 OF HOUSE KEEPING
Work area is in level 2 of house keeping, if there are no litters or unused material in the
middle of the floor but
* Clutter is found by the walls.
* The passageways are not clear
* Unused items are leaning against the walls or pillars
* Unused tools and equipment left beneath or beside the equipment
* The passageways are unclear
CORRECTIVE ACTION FOR LEVEL 2
* Look at vertical surface
* Examine the walls and pillars
* Eliminate all garbages and non-essential tools leaning against the walls. Paint all
walls and pillars that can be reached by hand.
HINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT
* Divide responsibilities for area and the walls.
LEVEL 3 OF HOUSE KEEPING
Work area is in level 3 of house keeping if the walk ways are clean and the factory is
clean, but
* The tools and material are still disorganized in the storage area.
* Tools, parts, clamps are all mixed together in the storage cabinets
* Gloves, shoes etc are thrown in with the tools in the tools box
* All tools are in locked storage units
* Unused and worth less items found inside closed cabinets.
CORRECTIVE ACTION FOR LEVEL 3
* Look inside the shelves and sort the material parts and tools
* Get rid locked cabinets
* Make separate storage for tools, parts, gauges, clamps, documents etc.
* Make above area distinct and clear.

HINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT


Remove the back and side of all the storage cabinets.
LEVEL 4 OF HOUSE KEEPING
At level 4, the work area will be with
Clean m/c and equipment
Storage area clearly distinguished
Storage area shows many parallel lines and right angles
Tools are colour coded
FURTHER IMPROVEMENT AT LEVEL 4
* Clean, straighten, tidy and organize automatically
* Develop visual control
HINTS FOR IMPROVEMENT
* Scrap and chips should fall directly into waste containers.
* Make a model line with super market type displays of parts and tools
LEVEL 5 OF HOUSE KEEPING
At level 5, the work place will witness
* Constant and continual cleaning from wall to wall
* Work area is immaculate
* Tools well laid out
* Origins of rubbish are removed so that dirt, clutter and garbage are eliminated at the
source
* Tools, parts and materials can be found visually
* Production runs smoothly
* High product quality achieved.

Scope
This procedure ensures that a competitive good housekeeping audit shall be conducted
management on a monthly quota to raise & maintain the level of housekeeping within
the company.

Responsibility

It is the responsibility of all management to conduct good housekeeping audits in their


work is as on a monthly basis & to publish results in order management to achieve
continuous improvement

Procedure

4.1
A good housekeeping audit sheet appendix i has been devised to assist
management to carry out monthly audits in each of their work areas & to publish
competitive scores & monthly winners. Required improvements shall be listed.
