B. Concepts/Ideas:
Measurement- is the act or process of a size, length, or amount known by measuring
something.

History of Measurement and its evolution
Doing Measurements of length and mass
D. Procedure:
1. Review
The teacher will ask one of his students to recall what has been taught last
meeting.
2. Motivation
The teacher will show pictures of different measuring instruments (meterstick,
ruler, tape measure, kitchen scales, beam balance, bathroom scale, and spring scale)
3. Presentation of the Lesson:
The teacher will discussed the history of measurement and its evolution, the
measurements of length and mass and converting units of measures into another.
4. Development of the Lesson:
a. What is the ancient system of measurement?
The idea of ancient system of measurement makes use of body parts.

b. What do you call the unit of measurement in the Chinese system of

measurement?
The Chinese system of measurement employed parts of the body, such as the
distance from the pulse to the base of the thumb.

c. What are the basic units used by the Romans?

The medieval system of measurement was an offshoot of the Roman system
which was a mixture of the Babylonian, the Egyptian, and the Chinese systems.

d. What are the sub-units of meter?

The common units used for measuring length in the English System of
Measurement are inches, feet, yard, and miles.

In the metric converter, seven points are used to represent the different units of
measure arranged from the largest unit to the smallest unit from left to right. One point is
connected to the next point by a line segment, where each connector represents a power
of 10 as either a multiplier or a divisor. If the direction is from left to right, it is a
multiplier, otherwise it is a divisor.

e. How to convert a unit of measure into another?

Convert 9.27 km to cm.

km

hm

dam

dm

cm

mm

km

hm

dam

dm

cm

Move from km to cm, which is from left to right. Since there are 5 connectors,
then we will use 105 or 100000 as multiplier.
9.27 100,000=927,000 cm

Therefore, 9.27km = 927,000 cm.

Convert 97,523 cm to m.

km

m
m

dm
dm

cm

mm

cm

Move from cm to m, which is from right to left. Since there are 2 connectors, then
we will use 102 or 100 as divisor.
97, 523 100=9.7523 m
Therefore, 97, 523 cm = 9.7523 m.
These conversions can be also being done in a simple way. We can use the
direction and the number of spaces between the units of measure in the converter as our
reference for locating the decimal point.
f. What is the relationship of the metric units for mass to the gram?
The table below shows the relationship of the metric units for mass to the gram.

g. What is the interrelatedness of kilogram, liter, and meter?

The interrelatedness of kilogram, liter, and meter can be seen in the table below.
Unit
1 gram (cubic centimeter)
1 kilogram (Liter)
1 tonne (cubic meter)

Symbol

A milliliter of water at 4C weighs 1/1000 of a kilogram. Thus, 1000 grams is

equivalent to 1 kg. The unit gram is used for small masses such as ingredients in
recipes or nutritional contents of various foods, and kilograms for heavier mass.
h. What are the various instruments used to measure mass?
Mass may be measured directly or indirectly.

5. Generalization
You have to decide which is the most suitable device to measure the mass of the
ingredients. Choose scales where you can read exactly the measurements you need. In a
weighing scale, make sure that the pointer is at the zero mark. When you put an object to
be weighed on the pan, the pointer moves and points to the mass of the object.
6. Application/ Fixing Skills
a. The teacher will group the class into three. First two rows will be the first group.
The next two rows will be the second group and the least two rows will be the
third group. Each group was given by a paintbrush, paperclip, eraser, and crayon.
The class will going to measure the length of the paintbrush using each of the
objects. Theyre going to record their answers on a piece of paper.
1. Number of paperclips used
2. Number of crayons used
3. Number of erasers used
b. Answer the following.
1. What is mass?
2. What units are used to measure mass?
3. How many milligrams are in a gram?
4. How many grams are in a kilogram?
5. How many centigrams are in a hectogram?

b. A boy weighing 27.6kg sits on one end of a seesaw. How many grams should
another boy weigh so that he balances with the boy on the other end?
c. A group of 5 students were asked to list down their masses. Their respective masses
were listed as: 52000g, 62.5kg, 580hg, 5080dag, 504000dg. What was the average
mass of the students?
