InTASC Standard 9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

For this particular standard, it discusses the importance of teachers understanding
their impact on students and how the teacher is responsible for reflecting upon their
practice. Through reflection, the teacher can evaluate the effectiveness of their instruction
based on the needs of their students. The teacher should use assessment tools in order
gather and analyze student performance data. Another way for teachers to reflect is
through classroom observations. Classroom observations allow for an administrator and/
or department head to evaluate the teacher and help determine the effectiveness of the
teachers practice. This can be very beneficial for teachers to continue learning and
growing by having an outsider making suggestions for improvement. Reflecting on
practice is an opportunity for teachers to continually be learning and growing.
In regards to ethical practice, it is important for teachers to abide by certain
educational laws as well as for the teacher to eliminate their own biases. Every teacher
and student come from different backgrounds and may have their own biases. In order to
create a positive learning environment and create a positive impact on students, teachers
need to eliminate their biases in the classroom.
What is this artifact?
The following artifacts are evaluations from my mentor teacher in both the middle and
high school rotations. My mentors completed the evaluative form as they were observing
me teach.
How does this artifact demonstrate mastery of the InTASC or COE standard?

This artifact shows mastery of the standard 9, specifically subsection 9(b). This
demonstrates mastery because through these particular observations, I was able to reflect
upon my teaching in order to adapt and adjust my instruction accordingly.
In what way does this artifact contribute to/relate to a positive effect on student
learning?
This artifact relates to a positive effect on student learning because I was able to improve
my practice through reflecting on areas of my instruction that needed improvement as
well as continue growing in my areas of strength.
How does this artifact demonstrate the Planning-Teaching-Learning cycle (judging
prior learning, planning instruction, teaching, assessing, analyzing, and reflecting)?
This artifact demonstrates the Reflecting, aspect of the Planning-Teaching-Learning
cycle. After I implemented the instruction of my lessons, I worked closely with my
Mentor Teacher as well as my University Supervisor to reflect on the effectiveness of my
lesson and to also discuss areas of strengths and areas to improve.
