Destination location
Cairo ( al-Qhirah) is the capital of Egypt and, with a total
population in excess of 16 million people, one of the largest cities in both Africa
and the Middle East (the regions which it conveniently straddles). It is also the
19th largest city in the world, and among the world's most densely populated
cities. It is a famous tourist destination for adventurous travelers and historians
alike. Cairo tends to be a city that travelers love and hate in equal measures. Its
sheer noise, pollution, and confounding traffic are an assault on your senses, but
look beyond the modern hubbub, and you'll find a history that spans centuries.
2. Transportation to and from
Whether youre travelling from Europe, North America, Asia, Oceania or the
Middle East, the indisputably easiest way to get to Egypt is by plane. Egypt
boasts 10 international airports that welcome millions of tourists and visitors
each year. Most of these airports welcome regular flights from several
international destinations, as well as charter flights, departing mainly from
Europe and the Middle East to the paradisiacal Red Sea coast airports.
Egypt also has its own national airline, EgyptAir, which flies from the main
cities of the European Continent, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and
Asia.
Cairo International Airport is the main gateway to Egypt and is located about
15 miles northeast of the city in northern Egypt. The airport has three terminals,
the latest of which was opened in 2009.
Exchange some money in the airport - best to do this before going through
customs. ATMs for all major cards are available in the arrival halls. Visas are
available at the bank counters before immigration. They are USD25 (Nov 2014)
and can also be paid in other currencies. Change is given in EGP or USD. The
airport offers Exclusive Services that pick you up at the gate, do all
immigration procedures for you and pick up your luggage while you wait in a
comfortable arrival lounge for USD50, not including the visa fees.
Visitors are allowed to buy duty free articles on arrival. If you are visiting
European or American friends, they are always keen to get your passports to get
more booze and cigarette. At the airport, the additional quantity is 4 bottles of
alcohol. At the checkout, a customs official will check your passport and give
approval for the purchase.
The airport is on the north-eastern of the city at Heliopolis. If you want to
spend the night at the airport, there are currently three hotels available: Le
Mridien Cairo Airport, (Terminal 3) (info.cairoairport@lemeridien.com, fax: +20
2 2265 9700), Novotel Cairo Airport, (H0502@accor.com), Le Passage,
(cairo@jaz.travel)
When returning to the airport for departure be sure of which terminal you are
departing from (1 or 3) and allow plenty of time (2-3 hours to be safe) to get to
the airport, as the roads can be very congested. If you depart on Friday morning
or mid-day, the trip to the airport will be quick, as roads are deserted while
people go to the mosque for Friday prayers.
Upon arriving, you need to pass through a security checkpoint before you can
get to the ticket counter/check-in area. You must bring a printout with you of
your itinerary or ticket to show the security staff to pass through the checkpoint.

You will pass through a second security checkpoint just before boarding your
aircraft. Allow plenty of time for getting through the security checkpoints and
checking in, as lines can be long. Note that there is no baggage room at the
airport.
Distance from Romania to Cairo is about 2769 km and most common travel
way is by airplane. There is no dirrect fly to Cairo, usualy it tranzit Istambul.
Flight duration is about 6 hours and the price start from 400 euro.
3. Climate and weather
Egypt has an arid, desert climate and the weather in Cairo is always warm, or
hot, and the nights cool. There are only two seasons: a very hot summer
between May and October, and a mild winter from November to April.
The best time to visit Cairo is during the Egyptian winter from November to
March, when daytime highs generally stay below 17C, with night time lows
around 9C. If visiting during winter, be aware that many buildings, including
some hotels and hostels, are equipped with air conditioners but no heaters.
Visitors should always pack a warm jacket for evening wear. The brief spring from
March to May can be pleasant, but summer temperatures, on the other hand, can
reach a searing 38C, which is compounded by the city's terrible pollution which
is at its worst in the fall before the rains.
4. Accomodation
The main tourist centres offer a broad spectrum of accommodation, with
everything from luxury palaces to homely pensions and flea-ridden dives. Even in
high season, in Cairo, Sinai or the Nile Valley, you should be able to find
something in your preferred range. Elsewhere, the choice is generally more
limited, with only basic lodgings available in some towns and cities. Cairo is
generally more expensive for accommodation of all types.
Hotels. Egyptian hotels are loosely categorized into star ratings, from one-star
to five-star deluxe. Below this there are unclassified hotels and pensions, some
tailored to foreign backpackers, others mostly used by Egyptians.
Deluxe hotels are almost exclusively modern and chain-owned (Sofitel,
Mvenpick, Hilton, etc), with swimming pools, bars, restaurants, air conditioning
and all the usual facilities. Four-star hotels can be more characterful, including
some famous names like the Old Cataract in Aswan and the Winter Palace in
Luxor.
At two- and one-star level, you rarely get air conditioning, though better
places will supply fans, and old-style buildings with balconies, high ceilings and
louvred windows are well designed to cope with the heat, but can be chilly in
winter, as they rarely have heating.

Greeting people. When you approach any individual or a group of people for
the first time, the best thing to say is the local variation of the Islamic form of
greeting "Es-Salmu-`Alku" which literally means "Peace be upon you". This is
the most common form of saying "hello" to anybody. When you leave you can
use "Maa Salama", literally means: "with safety" or "with wellness" which is used
to mean to say "goodbye". Smiling: Most people appreciate a smile, and most
Egyptians smile when they speak to someone for the first time. People who don't
smile while they speak are considered arrogant, rude, aggressive, unfriendly, etc.
