Forensic Light Source

Photography

This advanced five-day course has been designed to instruct students in the
photographic techniques required to photograph evidence using infrared,
ultraviolet, and specific wavelength light as emitted by Alternate Light Sources.
The training will be of special interest to personnel using full spectrum cameras.
Photography of subjects illuminated by ultraviolet radiation, infrared
radiation, and alternate light sources (ALS) can provide valuable evidence
when it is accomplished correctly. However, this type of photography has
frequently provided crime scene investigators and forensic photographers
with challenges. Normal digital cameras lack the ability to efficiently record
light outside of the visible spectrum by their very design.
Photographers can improve their photographic results while streamlining
their workflow when photographing evidence illuminated by the ALS once
the proper techniques are used. This course has been designed to instruct
innovative methods to photographically capture the most useful images of this
type of evidence using digital cameras.
Due to the amount of hands-on training in this course, enrollment is limited to
24 students. A selection of cameras, lenses, and light sources for use in the
course will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring the digital camera
used in their work and full-spectrum digital cameras, if so equipped.
This is an advanced course. Students are expected to have an understanding of
basic photography and camera operation prior to attendance.
