TheRichterscale:aformermeasureofearthquakemagnitude

In1935,CharlesRichterandBenoGutenbergdevelopedthelocalmagnitude(

CorrectingweaknessesofthemodifiedRichterscale
TheRichterScale,asmodified,wassuccessfullyappliedtocharacterizelocalities.Thisenabledlocal
buildingcodestoestablishstandardsforbuildingswhichwereearthquakeresistant.Howeveraseriesof
quakeswerepoorlyhandledbythemodifiedRichterscale.Thisseriesof"greatearthquakes",included
faultsthatbrokealongalineofupto1000km.Examplesincludethe1952AleutianFoxIslandsquake
andthe1960Chileanquake,bothofwhichbrokefaultsapproaching1000km.TheMSscalewasunable
tocharacterizethese"greatearthquakes"accurately.[5]
ThedifficultieswithuseofMSincharacterizingthequakeresultedfromthesizeoftheseearthquakes.
Greatquakesproduced20swavessuchthatMSwascomparabletonormalquakes,butalsoproduced
verylongperiodwaves(morethan200s)whichcarriedlargeamountsofenergy.Asaresult,useofthe
modifiedRichterscalemethodologytoestimateearthquakeenergywasdeficientathighenergies.[5]
In1972,KeiitiAki,aprofessorofGeophysicsattheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,introduced
elasticdislocationtheorytoimproveunderstandingoftheearthquakemechanism.Thistheoryproposed
thattheenergyreleasefromaquakeisproportionaltothesurfaceareathatbreaksfree,theaverage
