The Pastors Corner

Celebration of the Arts at Missouri UMC

By Rev. Amy L. Gearhart
UMC has always been a church that celebrates the
IMissouri
arts in our community. From the excellence of our own music
program to the choral events and Concert Series of the past
to the hosting of countless arts events by all ages through
the years, a vital part of our outward focus and community
relationship is celebrating and showcasing the gifts of artists of
many kinds.
We do that based on our theological understanding that God
has blessed us each with gifts. The gifts of creating, innovating
and serving through the arts are healing gifts that help us to
worship and praise God more fully. Built on this theology, the
Church throughout history has not only been the recipient
of expressions of art, but also the funder, benefactor and
inspiration for the work of artists throughout time. Imagine
Handels Messiah without the prophetic words of Isaiah. There
would be no Messiah. Imagine the Gloria Alleluias without the
connection to the triumph of Easter over the graves of death.
There would be no Gloria Alleluias. Our faith and the arts are
intricately intertwined.
This weekend, we will celebrate the arts in our community
by being a prime venue for the True/False Documentary Film
Fest. Thousands of people will be greeted, fed, and welcomed

into our church home as they not only enjoy great movies,
but enjoy the hospitality and the living out of our mission to
Connect all People with Jesus Christ. Come anytime this
weekend and experience the energy and joy of what happens
in our community and church with True False. Youll be
amazed!
This Sunday, we welcome a gifted piano duo to worship in our
8:50 and 11 services. In addition to their worship music, they
will hold a small concert in the sanctuary between services
at 10:00. It will be a wonderful way to experience a unique
musical experience as we give God thanks for the amazing
talents each of us has been given!
What are other ways to connect the churchs ministry with
the arts of our community? Use your imagination. Share your
ideas. Make some contacts. Frequently, by connecting an
artist to the churchs life, she or he realizes for the first time
what a welcome and hospitable community we are; and they
look forward to sharing their gifts in ministry.
Its a great weekend, like every day, in the life of our church.
Come celebrate, and Ill look forward to seeing you on Sunday,
if not before!
