The Venezuelan orchid originates from the mountains to the coast.


The May 23, 1951, by official decree declared as the national flower after a
thorough investigation of the natural sciences Venezuelan society. It is
popularly known as May Flower because in the nineteenth century, people
used it to decorate the "CRUZ DE MAYO".
Its scientific name is reminiscent CATTLEYA William Cattley, who in 1818 the
first bulbs cultivation of this plant in England, through a species sent from
Brazil and was the botanist John Lindley who gave him this name. In 1839
was found the CATTLEYA in Venezuela.
It is a species of orchid, epiphyte herbaceous. This plant belongs to the
cattleyas unifoliadas, its pseudobulbo of 15-20 inches tall and features a
single leaf oblong elliptical. Your flower measures 20 to 25 centimeters in
diameter, has sepals and petals wavy pink or lilac.
The sepals are lanceolados and petals are wide, wavy and ovoid. It has a
wonderful perfume. The lower petal called labellum. Its flowers can be
isolated or comprised inflorescence flowers and 3 to 5 are polarized by
insects.
The ramifications of these orchids tend to grow downward in the autumn

La orqudea venezolana es originada de la cordillera de la costa. El 23 de
mayo de 1951, por decreto oficial fue declarada como la flor nacional, luego
de una exhaustiva investigacin de la sociedad venezolana de ciencias
naturales. Se le conoce popularmente como la flor de mayo porque en el
siglo XIX el pueblo la utilizaba para adornar la CRUZ DE MAYO.
Su nombre cientfico es CATTLEYA recuerda a William Cattley, quien en 1818
cultivo los primeros bulbos de esta planta en Inglaterra, a travs de unas
especies enviadas desde Brasil y fue el botnico Jhon Lindley quien le dio
este nombre. En 1839 fue hallada la CATTLEYA en Venezuela.

Es una especie de orqudea, herbcea epifita. Esta planta pertenece al


grupo de CATTLEYAS UNIFOLIADAS, su pseudobulbo de 15 a 20 centmetros
de altura y presenta una hoja sola oblonga elptica. Su flor mide de 20 a 25
centmetros de dimetro, tiene spalos y ptalos rosados o lilas ondulados.
Los spalos son lanceolados y los ptalos son ms anchos, ondulados y
ovoides. Tiene un magnifico perfume. Su ptalo inferior se llama labelo. Sus
flores pueden ser aisladas o en inflorescencia compuestas por 3 a 5 flores y
son polarizadas por insectos.
Las ramificaciones de estas orqudeas tienden a desarrollarse hacia abajo,
en el otoo asume una coloracin roja, su talla es pequea, su principal
caracterstica es ser hermafrodita con una columna llamada ginostemo que
sustenta las estructuras reproductivas.
