BROCHURE
December 4. 2015
Description:
A two-sided (duplex) folding brochure.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I started by sketching out different designs for folding the brochure
and what kind of company/business I wanted to design it for. I chose a
pizzeria because they are very popular where I'm from in New York. I found
four quality images online to place in my brochure, I then chose a color
scheme and two contrasting fonts to place in an InDesign document. I
created a simple logo for the pizzeria and came up with some content
for the brochure, placed it all together and made everything red. Most
of the images needed to be cropped the way I wanted them to look, and
the back of the brochure is where I applied a text wrap around the pizza.
When the brochure is cut properly, the box behind the front pizza image is
removed, leaving the round pizza edge on it's own.

( Inside )

Project Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images,
not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text
wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,
headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

MONTAGE
October 24. 2015
Description:
Inspirational Montage made by blending three images with typography.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
This project was one of my favorites. I started with a personal portrait photo, a
sky image with three birds flying, and an Instagram photo of Calcite Springs,
Yellowstone National Park. I used the brush tool and adjusted opacity many
times with each image to blend and place them the way I liked. The portrait
image of myself was cut off at a certain point of my wrist. In order to move
my head more to the right for better alignment with the text, we needed to
add on more of the green background and photoshop the rest of my sleeve/
wrist in. This was difficult, but I think it came together well. Once text was
added, I downloaded a snow overlay and added it to the overall montage
image to create more of a twilight, winter look. This project was done in
Photoshop.
Project Objectives:

Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow.
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message.
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple
elements.
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour
choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme
word(s).
Select good quality images.

LETTER HEAD
November 6, 2015
Description:
Letterhead design using a personally created logo.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
This project was done using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. I downloaded
two different fonts from the internet, as well as a paint brush image in order
to create my logo. I then added a color scheme that seemed attractive and
aligned things along the right.
Project Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate
existing logos or use previous designs. Don't use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional
design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim
only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of
white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email
on each piece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no
parentheses/ hyphens.

LOGOS
October 30, 2015
Description:
Logo for local ice cream parlor in Portland, Oregon.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
This entire project was made in Adobe Illustrator. I started with sketching
the different ideas I had for the logo and then played with shapes to create
the ice cream cone and salt shaker. The next step was all about choosing
the right fonts for each. I liked both designs for this logo, so I decided to use
post both of them.
Project Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or

personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing
logos or use previous designs.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which
logo appeals most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No
Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc. No photos or live-tracing.
You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/
pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)
Refine one logo with variations for color

PHOTOGRAPHY
October 17, 2015
Description:
Demonstrating the ability to use good photo editing skills from an original
photo, in order to produce a professional image. The task with this was to
implement a color scheme effectively.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I started this project by taking a photo of something that had good, natural
color that I didn't have to edit very much. Then, I brought the photo into
photoshop to explore with the tetradic color scheme. I felt that the image
was good enough not to add much design besides some text and a few
color splotches to show the color scheme. I used the color scheme in the text
color as well. I played with a mask that added more indigo to the tint of the
photo. I also dropped a bit of light in the corner to help with the flow and
power of the text. This was a fun project, but definitely one that took some
time and focus.
Project Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate
layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8" (0.125) from all four sides.

EVENT AD
October 9, 2015
Description:
Armani benefit event flier in color.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I started this project by choosing an image that had potential for a benefit
event flier. I found this image from a current GQ magazine. The image
spoke loudly for itself, but I had to sketch out where the best placement for
the title and text. I used different shades of dark blue to contrast the text
with the image and there is a variety of bold and regular fonts. The logo is
from Armani, the actual designer of the suit. White space was important,
so I tried to keep this design classy and simple.
Project Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe
programs, including Photoshop.

FLIER
October 2, 2015
Description:
For my Visual Media class, we received an assignment to create a black and
white flyer with the required images and text. This is an announcement for
graduating seniors to attend a leadership conference in the Fall. Overall, I
wanted this flyer to have an easy flow for the eye, and be simple enough to
catch the right attention.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
This flyer was created with the Adobe InDesign program. However, I also
used the graduation cap graphic from an online source. The photo image
was also edited with Adobe Photoshop, in order to cut out the background
to create more white space. I created this flyer with the goal to capture
the FOCUS design principle of Organizing the Layout. White space was
something that I really wanted to utilize so that the flyer would become
more appealing to the viewer. I also tried to incorporate the FOCUS design
principle, Formulate a Plan by focusing on a main message or theme.
Project Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep
links in InDesign intact.

WEB PAGE
November 22, 2015
Description:
This is a webpage to showcase the "Isle of You" logo I created.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
At the beginning of this project, I had no knowledge of HTML or CSS
coding. This webpage was made entirely in TextWrangler. I referenced
css-tricks.com to figure out how to change my coding in order to design
the page a little differently. This project was very different from the rest
that we have done so far, but I feel that I learned the basics well. The text
describes the message I wanted to portray with the logo and the process
of how it was created. I used the same fonts that I had used previously on
my stationary and business cards, and I also found a texture image for the
background and used the same colors from my previous project.
Project Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long
side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale
for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags
Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1,
h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS
provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change
at least the following: The h1 text color & h1 background color, font
colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, font
families and add at least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match the logo using Photoshop, and color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen
shot with .5 inch margins for printing.
