You dont need to know a lot about music to do the songs and
activities in this book. With the Learn & Play series, you and your
family can share hours of singing, playing, and enjoying music
together.

Music and You

Here are some fun ways to add music making to your life every day:
1. Name that Sound Game: Play a sound from the kitchen and
have a family member or friend name it while listening from the
next room. You can play sounds that are as easy as running water
and as challenging as peeling a carrot.
2. Make Instruments: Fill a coffee can with dried beans to make
a snare drum. Use wooden spoons as drum sticks. Cover one end
of an empty toilet paper roll with wax paper, fasten with a rubber
band and hum through the open end to make a kazoo. There are
many more you can do.
3. Parodies: Make up new words to the songs in this book, or other
songs you knows well. Make up songs about a pet, friends, family,
the morning routine, school, or anything at all.
4. Listen for Rhythms: Car wiper blades, heartbeat, washing
machine, dryer, clocks, raindrops, etc. Make a list of things that
have a steady rhythm and things that have an unsteady rhythm.
5. Attend Performances: Go to concerts, resitals and other
musical performances whenever possible.

Introduction
Welcome to First Acts Learn & Play
Harmonica. This method has been designed
to teach beginners the basics of playing the
harmonica and reading music. You will learn
basic melodies and music notation while
having fun making music.

Harmonica History
The harmonica was invented in 1821, by a German clock maker
named Christian Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann. It is a member of the
aerophone family of instruments. Aerophones produce musical sounds
by air vibrating in the instrument. Other members of the aerophone
family include recorder, clarinet, trumpet, and accordion.

Three Steps to Playing the Harmonica

Step 1 Left Hand
Hold the harmonica
with your left hand.
Your thumb should be
below the harmonica
and your fingers

Step 3 Blow
Put the harmonica up to your lips. Make sure your lips cover the top
and bottom of the harmonica so no air can escape. Now exhale or
blow gently into the harmonica.

Caring for your Harmonica

The harmonica requires little care. After you are finished playing, tap it
gently against the palm of your hand to remove any excess moisture.
Tap it on the side of the harmonica against the holes.

Music is made up of notes (pitches) and rhythms (length of notes).
Notes on the harmonica are shown with the numbers 110.

Music is divided into measures by bar lines. A double bar line

means the end of a song. A rhythm clef is at the beginning of every
line of harmonica music in this book.

A time signature tells you how many beats are in each measure.

Get one beat each

Whole notes last four counts or beats. Take a deep breath

and exhale for four counts. Thats how long a whole note lasts.

Half notes last for two counts or beats. Try walking slowly
and count to two for every step you take. Thats how long a
half note lasts.

Quarter notes last for one count or beat. They move like
regular walking steps. Walk and count slowly and take a step
for every count. Thats how long a quarter note lasts.

Exhale/Inhale
Harmonicas are unique. Most wind instruments only make a sound
when you exhale and blow air into them. The harmonica is the ONLY
wind instrument that makes a musical sound whether you blow air
into it (exhale) OR draw air out of it (inhale).
Red = exhale (Hot Air)

We will use red numbers for exhale notes. An easy way to remember
this is: red = hot air.

Blue = inhale (Fresh Air)

We will use blue numbers for inhale notes. An easy way to remember
this is blue = fresh air on a warm spring day.
Practice making sounds by exhaling and inhaling gently into the
harmonica.

TIP
The less air you use,
the better youll sound.

Play Whole-Note Hot Breath on page 15, using whole notes (four
beats of sound) and whole rests (four beats of silence). Play any group
of holes on the harmonica using the exhale breath (hot air).

The best way to start a song is to count four steady beats (count at the
same speed as the song you are about to play), and then begin to play

Playing Chords
Chords are a group of three notes played at the same time. They are
easy to play and great for sing alongs and having fun with music.
Harmonica numbers tell you which holes to blow
(exhale) or draw (inhale).
This picture means blow into holes 3, 4, and 5 at
the same time, on your harmonica.

Line up your mouth with holes 3, 4, and 5. You can use the tip of
your tongue to count the holes and find the right starting place. Blow
gently. Congratulations! You just played your first chord.

LA PLACE DE LA MUSIQUE DANS VOTRE VIE

Voici quelques jeux ludiques qui vont vous permettre dintgrer la
musique vos activits quotidiennes:
1. De quel bruit ou son sagit-il ? : Faites un bruit, par exemple
de la cuisine, puis demandez un membre de votre famille ou un
ami de lcouter de la pice voisine et de lidentifier. Il peut sagit
tout simplement de leau qui coule, ou pour corser les choses, de
lpluchage dune carotte !
2. Fabriquez vos propres instruments: Remplissez une
cafetire de grains de caf secs de manire former une caisse
claire. Servez-vous de cuillres en bois en guise de baguettes de
tambour. Couvrez lune des extrmits dun rouleau de papier
toilette de papier sulfuris, fixez-le avec un lastique et fredonnez
par lextrmit ouverte comme avec un mirliton. La liste peut
stendre linfini.
3. Les parodies: Inventez de nouvelles paroles chanter sur les
mlodies contenues dans cette mthode, ou pour accompagner
toute autre chanson clbre. Inventez des chansons traitant de
sujets tels que vos animaux domestiques, vos amis, votre famille,
les taches matinales quotidiennes, lcole, ou toute autre chose.
4. coutez les rythmes: Balais dessuie-glace de voiture,
battements du cur, machine laver, schoir, rveil, gouttes de
pluie, etc.. Constituez une liste dlments au rythme rgulier et
une liste dlments au rythme irrgulier.
5. Allez au spectacle: Assistez des concerts, des rcitals et
autres spectacles musicaux lorsque loccasion se prsente.

LHISTOIRE DE LHARMONICA
Lharmonica fut invent en 1821 par lhorloger allemand Christian
Friedrich Ludwig Buschmann. Lharmonica fait partie de la famille
des arophones. Les instruments arophones produisent des sons
musicaux grce aux vibrations de lair lintrieur de linstrument. La
flte bec, la clarinette, la trompette et laccordon font galement
partie de la famille des arophones.

Plaquez lharmonica contre vos lvres. Veillez ce que les lvres
couvrent la partie suprieure tout comme la partie infrieure de
lharmonica de manire ce que lair ne puisse pas schapper. Vous
pouvez maintenant expirer lair ou souffler doucement dans lharmonica.

ENTRETIEN DE VOTRE HARMONICA

Lharmonica demande peu dentretien. Lorsque vous avez fini de
jouer, tapotez lgrement lharmonica contre la paume de votre main
de manire faire sortir lexcdent dhumidit. Tapoter sur la partie
latrale de lharmonica, lendroit o se trouvent les trous.

La musique est constitue de notes (tonalit) et de rythmes (longueur
des notes). Sur lharmonica, les notes sont numrotes de 1 10.

La musique est divise en mesures par des barres de mesure.

Une double barre de mesure indique la fin de la chanson. La cl de
sol se trouve au dbut de chaque ligne de musique pour lharmonica.

pas. Voil pour la dure de la blanche.

Une noire dure un temps (comptez jusqu 1). Le rythme de

ces notes rappelle celui de pas rguliers. Marchez en comptant
lentement chaque pas. Voil pour la dure de la noire.

EXPIRATION/INSPIRATION
Lharmonica est unique en son genre. La plupart des instruments
vent produit un son lorsquon fait rentrer lair en soufflant dans
linstrument. Lharmonica est le seul instrument vent capable de
produire un son *soit en faisant rentrer lair dans linstrument (en
soufflant), soit en faisant sortir lair de linstrument (en aspirant).
(NDT:En dautres termes, lharmonica est le seul instrument dans lequel on respire (aspirer/souffler)).

Les notes expires sont indiques par les chiffres rouges. Pour une
mmorisation facile, souvenez-vous que: rouge = air chaud

belle journe de printemps.
Entranez-vous produire des sons en soufflant et en aspirant

temps par note) et des pauses (silence de quatre temps). Jouez
un groupe de trous quelconque sur lharmonica en soufflant
(expiration dair chaud).

La meilleure faon de dmarrer une chanson est de compter quatre

temps rguliers (compter la vitesse laquelle vous allez jouer), puis
de commencer jouer.

JOUER DES ACCORDS

Un accord est un groupe de trois notes que lon joue simultanment.
Les accords sont faciles jouer et rendent bien en accompagnement de
chansons et pour samuser faire de la musique.
Les chiffres indiqus sur lharmonica indiquent
les trous dans lesquels vous devez souffler
(expiration) ou aspirer lair (aspiration).
Lillustration indique de souffler simultanment
dans les trous numrots 3, 4, et 5 sur lharmonica.

Aligner la bouche sur les trous 3, 4, et 5 de lharmonica. Aidez-vous

du bout de la langue pour compter les trous et trouver le bon point de
dpart. Soufflez en douceur. Flicitations ! Vous venez tout juste de
