Bamboo Floor Manufacturing

123 Bamboo Flooring is owned & managed by Asian Sources since early
2006

All products are manufactured from carefully selected,

mature bamboo poles which provide the best strength,
stability and durability using modern technology and
equipment to produce eco-friendly products.
In order to manufacture a product from bamboo, a lot
of attention needs to be paid to the place where the
bamboo is grown and how it is harvested. Determining
the origin and age of the bamboo is very important for
guaranteeing the right hardness and color.

Bamboo slitting
The bamboo stem, the Phyllostachys Pubescens, is
sawn into small strips which are then planed smooth.
The green outer surface is removed by planing so just
the light (white / yellow) inside remains.

Raw bamboo slats - Raw material

Carbonization is a process of heating the bamboo slats
at high temperature under controlled air-conditions. The
longer the fiber is pressure steamed, the darker the
sugar compounds become.

Carbonization and anti-insect treatment

Bamboo can have different color shades (lighter and
darker) according to various environmental factors.
Depending on the area of origin, the ground constitution
and climate (number of hours of sunshine, amount of
rain, temperature, etc.) variations in the density and
complexion of the material can occur. 5 to 6 year old
bamboo stems are used for most of the products. If the
bamboo is younger, the color will generally be lighter
and the hardness and toughness will be less.

Inspection of bamboo slats

It is important to process, treat and dry the harvested
bamboo stems within a few days after harvesting.
Bamboo becomes darker, as well as more prone to
insect infections and the development of mould and
bacteria, if the (wet) stems are stored for longer, giving
the end product darker blemishes or a darker colored
surface. In this respect the season of the harvest is also
important. The "winter harvest", for example, is dryer
and easier to keep the right color than the wet harvest
at the beginning of the year and in early summer.

Gluing of slats
Before drying (which makes it harder for organisms to
develop) bamboo also undergoes a treatment where the
strips are boiled in a bath for about 3 hours. A small
percentage (1.5%) of water peroxide is usually added
during this boiling process. The aim of the treatment is
to remove the sugars present in the material and to kill
any living organisms. It also acts as a bleaching agent.

Hydraulic hot press

Bamboo is characterized by ring-like thickenings on the
stem. Processed as floor or panel, these parts are
visible as darker "knots". If the bamboo strips are
processed horizontally (plain pressed), then these
bamboo knots are clearly visible. When they are
processed vertically (side pressed) the knots are less
obvious and the line patterning dominates.

Surface Coating: The first finish application for prefinished plank is the sealer coat followed by the
aluminum oxide coat that protects the fiber. The third
coat is the aluminum oxide sealer coat, followed by two
coats of high quality scratch-resistant polyurethane for
easy refinishing.
